  • The goal of this study is to retrofit the windows of residential buildings and to activate the green remodeling by verifying energy saving and indoor thermal environment. As a result of analysis of the energy saving effect of 458 units window retrofits, it was possible to reduce the energy requirement by 48.20% ~ 54.97%. According to the improvement on indoor environment, it was possible to operate by reducing heating temperature and supply time. The actual gas consumption of the heating period was reduced by 25% compared with that of the window retarder to save 28,968 thousand won of heating energy cost. Resident's satisfaction surveys were conducted one year after window retrofit. More than 80% of the respondents answered that they satisfied the improvement on window performance, indoor thermal environment and indoor sound environment. As a result, we verified the energy saving effect and the improvement on the indoor environment through window retrofits.

  • In this paper, using Bianchi's model with channel idle probability we analyze performance of power management scheme of IEEE 802.11 DCF according to ATIM window size and number of nodes for wireless ad hoc networks. The analytical results show that, when the number of nodes is given, the selected ATIM window size limits the performance.

  • IEEE 802.11 has employed distributed coordination function (DCF) adopting carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). To effectively resolve collisions, DCF uses binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm with three parameters, i.e., backoff stage, backoff counter and contention window. If a collision occurs, stations involving in the collision increase their backoff stages by one and double their contention window sizes. However, DCF with BEB wastes wireless resource when there are many contending stations. Therefore, in this paper, to enhance the performance of wireless LAN, we propose binary negative-exponential backoff (BNEB) algorithm which maintains a maximum contention window size during collisions and reduces a contention window size to half after successful transmission of a frame without retransmissions. For IEEE 802.11, 802.11a and 802.11b standards, we also compare the performance of DCF with BEB to that with BNEB.

  • This study aims to evaluate the illuminance performance of sloped light guide with automated venetian blind systems. For the purpose, a mock-up model was constructed as a prototype of Korean office building with $12.0m{\times}7.3m{\times}3.7m$ ($w{\times}d{\times}h$) and south facing side-window mounted between the clerestory window($2.0m^2$) and the view window($5.6m^2$). The light guide of 1.28m deepth and $29^{\circ}$ tilted angle, is covered with 0.6mm galvanized steel sheet and 97% reflective film. To protect the room from low solar angle, a blind systems, 0.15m deepth and $30^{\circ}$ automated slat angle was installed. To assess illuminance performance, the totally 37 measuring points for illuminance were monitored. For the detailed analysis, photometric sensors were installed at work-plane (8 points), wall (7 points), ceiling (3points), and exterior horizontal illuminance (1 point) respectively. The performance was measured under clear sky and is monitored by Agilent data logger, photometric sensor Li-cor and the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. Comparisons of light factor and uniformity are discussed.

  • Ventilation performance in the storage hall of Janggyeongpan Jeon has maintained for more than 600 years. Janggyeongpan Jeon in Haein temple has window structure of bi-level ventilating opening which consists of upper and lower window. Also, different size and shape of windows are adopted for various locations of the hall. In the present study, to analyze effect of shape of windows on ventilation performance in the storage hall, various design alternatives were considered. Numerical analysis of ventilation in the storage hall was investigated under the same simulation condition except for the shape of windows. Through the comparison of numerical results for various window designs, it was evaluated that the current windows shape gives best ventilation performance.

  • This work analyzes the performance of the parallel packet switch (PPS) with a sliding window (SW) method. The PPS involves numerous packet switches that operate independently and in parallel. The conventional PPS dispatch algorithm adopts a round robin (RR) method. The class of PPS is characterized by deployment of parallel low-speed switches whose all memory buffers run more slowly than the external line rate. In this work, a novel SW packet switching method for PPS, called SW-PPS, is proposed. The SW-PPS employs memory space more effectively than the existing PPS using RR algorithm. Under identical Bernoulli and bursty data traffic, the SW-PPS provided significantly improved performance when compared to PPS with RR method. Moreover, this investigation presents a novel mathematical analytical model to evaluate the performance of the PPS using RR and SW method. Under various operating conditions, our proposed model and analysis successfully exhibit these performance characteristics including throughput, cell delay, and cell drop rate.

  • In an effort to improve the performance of mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), we investigate the effects of varying the parameters for the filter banks and their associated windows on speech recognition rates. Specifically, the mel and bark scales are combined with various types of filter bank windows. Comparison and evaluation of the suggested methods are performed by two independent ways of speech recognition and the Fisher discriminant objective function. It is shown that the Hanning window based on the bark scale yields 28.1% relative performance improvements over the triangular window with the mel scale in speech recognition error rate. Further work on incorporating PCA and/or LDA would be desirable as a postprocessor to MFCC extraction.

  • TCP is the most widely-used transport layer protocol in current Internet, while ATM technology is used to increase the data communication speed at data link layer and network layer. In the TCP-over-ATM architecture, the most significant problems are (i) the partial packet discarding problem, and (ii) the TCP window timeout problem. Several approaches have been proposed to solve the partial packet discard problem and the timeout problem individually, but none of them considered the two problems together. In this paper, we propose an enhanced UBR+ scheme which supports fairness among the TCP connections using UBR+ scheme, and provides protection of damaged VC from the multiple packet losses in the same TCP sliding window. To analyze its performance, we simulate the proposed scheme using OPNET. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme supports fairness, and also increases the throughput by reducing the probability of multiple cell losses in the same TCP window.

  • Network coding improves TCP's performance in lossy wireless networks. However, the complex congestion window evolution of network coded TCP (TCP-NC) makes the analysis of end-to-end throughput challenging. This paper analyzes the evolutionary process of TCP-NC against lossy links. An analytic model is established by applying a two-dimensional Markov chain. With maximum window size, end-to-end erasure rate and redundancy parameter as input parameters, the analytic model can reflect window evolution and calculate end-to-end throughput of TCP-NC precisely. The key point of our model is that by the novel definition of the states of Markov chain, both the number of related states and the computation complexity are substantially reduced. Our work helps to understand the factors that affect TCP-NC's performance and lay the foundation of its optimization. Extensive simulations on NS2 show that the analytic model features fairly high accuracy.

  • Concept drift detection on data stream is the major issue to maintain the performance of the machine learning model. Since the online stream is to be a function of time, the classical statistic methods are hard to apply. In particular case of seasonal time series, a novel window strategy with Fourier analysis however, gives a chance to adapt the classical methods on the series. We explore the KS-test for an adaptation of the periodic time series and show that this strategy handles a complicate time series as an ordinary tabular dataset. We verify that the detection with the strategy takes the second place in time delay and shows the best performance in false alarm rate and detection accuracy comparing to that of arbitrary window sizes.
