  • High-rise buildings are very slender and flexible. Their low stiffness values make them vulnerable to horizontal loads, such as those associated with wind or earthquakes. For high-rise buildings, the threat to serviceability caused by wind-induced vibration is an important problem. To estimate the serviceability under wind action, the response acceleration of a building at the roof height is used. The response acceleration is estimated by the same wind speed at all wind directions. In general, the effect of wind direction is not considered. Therefore, the response accelerations obtained are conservative. If buildings have typical plans and strong winds blow from relatively constant wind directions, it is necessary to account for the wind direction to estimate the response accelerations. This paper presents three methods of evaluating the response accelerations while considering the effects of wind direction. These three serviceability evaluation methods were estimated by combining the wind directional frequency data obtained from a weather station with the results of a response analysis using wind tunnel tests. Finally, the decrease in the efficiencies of the response acceleration for each serviceability evaluation method was investigated by comparing the response acceleration for the three methods accounting for wind direction with the response acceleration in which wind direction was not considered.

  • Guyed mast structures exhibit characteristics such as high flexibility, low mass, small damping ratio, and large aspect ratio, leading to a complex wind-induced vibration response mechanism. This study analyzed the time- and frequency-domain characteristics of the wind-induced response of a guyed mast structure using measured acceleration response data obtained from the Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower (SZMGT). Firstly, 734 sets of 1-hour acceleration samples measured from 0:00 October 1, 2021, to 0:00 November 1, 2021, were selected to study the vibration shapes of the mast and the characteristics of the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. Secondly, six sets of typical samples with different vibration intensities were further selected to explore the Gaussian property and modal parameter characteristics of the mast. Finally, the modal parameters of the SZMGT are identified and the identification results are verified by finite element analysis. The findings revealed that the guyed mast vibration shape exhibits remarkable diversity, which increases nonlinearly along the height in most cases and reaches a maximum at the top of the tower. Moreover, the GEV distribution characteristics of the 734 sets of samples are closer to the Weibull distribution. The probability distribution of the structural wind vibration response under strong wind is in good agreement with the Gaussian distribution. The structural response of the mast under wind loading exhibits multiple modes. As the structural response escalates, the first three orders of modal energy in the tower display a gradual increase in proportion.

  • It is well known that cylinder steel stacks are heavily impacted by vortex-induced vibration. However, the wind-induced vibration behaviors of tower-supported steel stacks are not clarified due to a lack of observation. We studied a stack's response to strong winds over a long period of time by observing the extreme wind-induced vibration of a 200 m-high tower-supported steel stack. This experiment aimed to identify the wind-induced vibration properties of a tower-supported steel stack and assess the validity of the vibration control method used in the experiment. Results revealed a trend in wind-induced vibration behavior. In turn, an effective measure for controlling such vibration was defined by means of increasing the structural damping ratio due to the effects of the tuned mass damper to dramatically decrease the vortex-induced vibration of the stack.

  • The yaw and interference effects of blades affect aerodynamic performance of large wind turbine system significantly, thus influencing wind-induced response and stability performance of the tower-blade system. In this study, the 5MW wind turbine which was developed by Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) was chosen as the research object. Large eddy simulation on flow field and aerodynamics of its wind turbine system with different yaw angles($0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$) under the most unfavorable blade position was carried out. Results were compared with codes and measurement results at home and abroad, which verified validity of large eddy simulation. On this basis, effects of yaw angle on average wind pressure, fluctuating wind pressure, lift coefficient, resistance coefficient, streaming and wake characteristics on different interference zone of tower of wind turbine were analyzed. Next, the blade-cabin-tower-foundation integrated coupling model of the large wind turbine was constructed based on finite element method. Dynamic characteristics, wind-induced response and stability performance of the wind turbine structural system under different yaw angle were analyzed systematically. Research results demonstrate that with the increase of yaw angle, the maximum negative pressure and extreme negative pressure of the significant interference zone of the tower present a V-shaped variation trend, whereas the layer resistance coefficient increases gradually. By contrast, the maximum negative pressure, extreme negative pressure and layer resistance coefficient of the non-interference zone remain basically same. Effects of streaming and wake weaken gradually. When the yaw angle increases to $45^{\circ}$, aerodynamic force of the tower is close with that when there's no blade yaw and interference. As the height of significant interference zone increases, layer resistance coefficient decreases firstly and then increases under different yaw angles. Maximum means and mean square error (MSE) of radial displacement under different yaw angles all occur at circumferential $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ of the tower. The maximum bending moment at tower bottom is at circumferential $20^{\circ}$. When the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, the maximum downwind displacement responses of different blades are higher than 2.7 m. With the increase of yaw angle, MSEs of radial displacement at tower top, downwind displacement of blades, internal force at blade roots all decrease gradually, while the critical wind speed decreases firstly and then increases and finally decreases. The comprehensive analysis shows that the worst aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of the wind turbine system are achieved when the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, whereas the worst stability performance and ultimate bearing capacity are achieved when the yaw angle is $45^{\circ}$.

  • Excessive wind-induced motion in tall buildings can cause discomfort, affect health, and disrupt the daily activities of the occupants of a building. Dynamic vibration absorbers such as the tuned mass dampers (TMDs) can be used to reduce the wind-induced motion below a specified tolerable serviceability limit state (SLS) criterion. This study investigates whether the same probability of not exceeding specified wind-induced motion levels can be achieved by torsionally sensitive structures without/with linear/nonlinear TMDs subjected to partially correlated wind forces, if they are designed to just meet the same SLS criterion. For the analyses, different structures and the uncertainty in the response, wind load and perception of motion is considered. Numerical results indicate that for structures that are designed or retrofitted without or with optimum linear TMDs and satisfying the same SLS criterion, their probability of exceeding the considered criterion is very consistent, if the inherent correlation between the wind forces is considered in design. However, this consistency deteriorates if nonlinear TMDs are employed. Furthermore, if the correlation is ignored in the design, in many cases a slightly unconservative design, as compared to the designed by considering correlation, is achieved.

  • Three common medium- rise building forms were physically tested to study their overall wind induced structural response. Emphasis was placed on the torsional response and its correlation with other peak responses. A higher correlation was found between the peak responses than between the general fluctuating parts of the signals. This suggests a common mechanism causing the peak event, and that this mechanism is potentially different to the mechanism causing the general load fluctuations. The measurements show that about 80% of the peak overall torsion occur simultaneously with the peak overall along wind drag for some generic building shapes. However, the peak torsional response occurs simultaneously with only 30%-40% of the peak overall drag for the rectangular model. These results emphasise the importance of load combinations for building design, which are often neglected in the design of medium sized rigid buildings for which the along-wind drag is dominant. Current design wind loading standards from around the world were evaluated against the results to establish their adequacy for building design incorporating wind-induced torsion effects. Although torsion is frequently neglected, for some structural systems it may become more important.

  • This paper presents the dynamic characteristics analysis of the purlin-sheet roofs by the random vibration theories. Results show that the natural vibration frequency of the purlin-sheet roof is low, while the frequencies and mode distributions are very intensive. The random vibration theory should be used for the dynamic characteristics of the roof structures due to complex vibration response. Among the first 20th vibration modes, the first vibration mode is mainly the deformations of purlins, while the rest modes are the overall deformations of the roof. In the following 30th modes, it mainly performs unilateral local deformations of the roof. The frequency distribution of the first 20th modes varies significantly while those of the following 30th modes are relatively sensitive. For different parts, the contributions of vibration modes on the vibration response are different. For the part far from the roof ridge, only considering the first 5th modes can reflect the wind-induced vibration response. For the part near the ridge, at least the first 12 modes should be considered, due to complex vibration response. The wind vibration coefficients of the upwind side are slightly higher than that of the leeward side. Finally, the corresponding wind vibration coefficient for the purlin-sheet roof is proposed.

  • Quayside container cranes are important delivery machineries located in the most frontiers of container terminals, where strong wind attacks happen occasionally. Since the previous researches on quayside container cranes mainly focused on the mean wind load and static response characteristics, the fluctuating wind load and dynamic response characteristics require further investigations. In the present study, the aerodynamic wind loads on quayside container cranes were obtained from wind tunnel tests. The probabilistic and spectral models of the fluctuating aerodynamic loads were established. Then the joint probabilistic distributions of dynamic wind-induced responses were derived theoretically based on a series of Gaussian and independent assumption of resonant components. Finally, the results were validated by time domain analysis using wind tunnel data. It is concluded that the assumptions are acceptable. And the presented approach can estimate peak dynamic sliding force, overturning moments and leg uplifts of quayside container cranes effectively and efficiently.

  • In this study, a turbulence simulation is carried out in a suction type wind tunnel using grids, where turbulent flows with various turbulence intensity are successfully produced by the change of grid size, arrangement of grids and settling position, respectively. Response tests of rectangular cylinder models with aspect ratio of 2 and 4 are carried out in smooth flow and generated turbulent flows. Additionally, two types of fairing are considered such as right triangle and regular triangle. The effects of wind velocity fluctuations and fairing are discussed on vortex-induced oscillation.
