Airborne-pests can be introduced into Korea from overseas areas by wind, which can cause considerable damage to major crops. Meteorological models have been used to estimate the wind trajectories of airborne insects. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of input settings on the prediction of areas where airborne pests arrive by wind. The wind trajectories were predicted using the HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. The HYSPLIT model was used to track the wind dispersal path of particles under the assumption that brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) was introduced into Korea from sites where the pest was reported in China. Meteorological input data including instantaneous and average wind speed were generated using meso-scale numerical weather model outputs for the domain where China, Korea, and Japan were included. In addition, the calculation time intervals were set to 1, 30, and 60 minutes for the wind trajectory calculation during early June in 2019 and 2020. It was found that the use of instantaneous and average wind speed data resulted in a considerably large difference between the arrival areas of airborne pests. In contrast, the spatial distribution of arrival areas had a relatively high degree of similarity when the time intervals were set to be 1 minute. Furthermore, these dispersal patterns predicted using the instantaneous wind speed were similar to the regions where the given pest was observed in Korea. These results suggest that the impact assessment of input settings on wind trajectory prediction would be needed to improve the reliability of an approach to predict regions where airborne-pest could be introduced.

In this study, low noise designs of a Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. From a previous study, it was found that the high harmonic components whose fundamental frequency is higher than the BPF were found to be dominant in noise spectrum of a Savonius wind turbine. On a basis of this observation, S-shaped blade tip is proposed as a low design factors that decrease wind turbine noise by inducing phase differences in vortex shedding. The conventional Savonius and S-shaped turbines are investigated using Hybrid CAA method where flow field around the turbine are computed using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Noise reductions by these design factors are confirmed by comparing the predicted noise levels from these turbines.

A large floating offshore wind-wave hybrid power generation system with an area of 150 m2 and four 3 MW class wind turbine generators was installed at each column top. In accordance with the wind turbine arrangement, the wake generated from upstream turbines can adversely affect the power performance and load characteristics of downstream turbines. Therefore, an optimal arrangement design, obtained through a detailed flow analysis focusing on wake interference, is necessary. In this study, to determine the power characteristics and annual energy production (AEP) of individual wind turbines, transient computational fluid dynamics, considering wind velocity variation (8 m/s, 11.7 m/s, 19 m/s, and 25 m/s), was conducted under different platform conditions ($0^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$). The AEP was calculated using a Rayleigh distribution, depending on the wind turbine arrangement. In addition, we suggested an optimal arrangement design to minimize wake losses, based on the AEP.
Offshore wind turbines are supported by various foundations, each with its considerations in design and construction. Gravity, monopile, and suction bucket foundations encounter geotechnical issues, while jacket and tripod foundations face fatigue problems. Considering this, a gravity foundation based on a steel skirt was developed, and a monopile foundation was analyzed for Pile-Soil Interaction using the p-y curve and 3D finite element method (3D FEM). In addition, for suction bucket foundations, the effects of lateral and vertical loads were analyzed using 3D FEM and centrifuge tests. Fatigue analysis for jacket and tripod foundations was conducted using a hotspot stress approach. Some hybrid foundations and shape optimization techniques that change the shape to complement the problems of each foundation described above were assessed. Hybrid foundations could increase lateral resistance compared to existing foundations because of the combined appendages, and optimization techniques could reduce costs by maximizing the efficiency of the structure or by reducing costs and weight. This paper presents the characteristics and research directions of the foundation through various studies on the foundation. In addition, the optimal design method is presented by explaining the problems of the foundation and suggesting ways to supplement them.

The object of this paper is to optimize the battery system for supplying stably power in separate house in which a PV-wind hybrid power generation system is applied. In a power system to be used in a stand alone, it is very important to build optimize the electrical storage system and to utilize it for supplying stably output voltage when there is a shortage of the power generation capacity or there is no sunshine, or when power is to be supplied with a load. This paper provides an optimized method to evaluate capacity of battery by analyzing advantages and disadvantages of the existing battery evaluating method being used in each company for supplying stably power in separate house utilizing the new renewable energy such as a light of the sun.

Hybrid coupled shear walls in tall buildings are known as efficient structural systems to provide lateral resistance to wind and seismic loads. Multiple hybrid coupled shear walls throughout a tall building should be joined to provide additional coupling action to resist overturning moments caused by the lateral loading. This can be done using a coupling beam which connects two shear walls. In this study, experimental studies on the hybrid coupled shear wall were carried out. The main test variables were the ratios of coupling beam strength to connection strength. Finally, this paper provides background for rational design guidelines that include a design model to behave efficiently hybrid coupled shear walls.

A hybrid RANS/LES approach, based on the Limited Numerical Scales concept, is applied to the numerical simulation of the flow around a square cylinder. The key feature of this approach is a blending between two eddy-viscosities, one given by the $k-{\varepsilon}$ RANS model and the other by the Smagorinsky LES closure. A mixed finite-element/finite-volume formulation is used for the numerical discretization on unstructured grids. The results obtained with the hybrid approach are compared with those given by RANS and LES simulations for three different grid resolutions; comparisons with experimental data and numerical results in the literature are also provided. It is shown that, if the grid resolution is adequate for LES, the hybrid model recovers the LES accuracy. For coarser grid resolutions, the blending criterion appears to be effective to improve the accuracy of the results with respect to both LES and RANS simulations.

Various hybrid dampers have been developed as increasing tall buildings in Korea. To minimize the installment space and cost, the new hybrid friction damper was developed using friction components. It is composed of two one-nodal rotary frictional components and a slotted bolted frictional connection. Because of these components, hybrid friction damper can be activated by building movements due to lateral forces such as a wind and earthquake. In this paper, displacement amplitude dependency tests were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance and the multi-slip mechanism of the hybrid damper. Test results show that the multi-slip mechanism is verified and friction coefficients are increasing as displacement amplitudes are increasing.

Recently, hybrid air-conditioning system has been proposed and applied to achieve building energy saving. One example is a system combining radiation panel with natural wind-induced cross-ventilation. However, few research works have been conducted on the non-uniformity of thermal comfort in such hybrid air-conditioning system. In this paper, both thermal environment and non-uniform thermal comfort of human thermal model under various air-conditioning system, including hybrid system, were evaluated in a typical office room using coupled simulation of computation fluid dynamics, radiation model and a human thermal model. The non-uniformity of thermal comfort was evaluated from the deviation of surface temperature of human thermal model. Flow fields and temperature distribution in each case were represented.
