Structural Model Test for Strength Performance Evaluation of Fairlead Chain Stopper Installed on MW Class Floating Type Offshore Wind Turbine (메가와트급 부유식 해상풍력발전기용 페어리드 체인 스토퍼의 강도 성능평가를 위한 구조 모형 시험)

  • Recently, the destructive power of typhoons is continuously increasing due to the influence of global warming. In a situation where the installation of floating wind turbines is increasing around the world, concerns about the huge loss and collapse of floating offshore wind turbines due to strong typhoons are deepening. Regarding to the safe operation of the floating offshore wind turbine, the development of a new type of disconnectable mooring system is required. A new fairlead chain stopper considered in this study is devised to more easily attach or detach the floating offshore wind turbine with mooring lines comparing to other disconnectable mooring apparatuses. In order to investigate the structural safety of the initial design of fairlead chain stopper that can be applied to MW-class floating type offshore wind turbine, scale-down structural models were produced using a 3-D printer and structural tests were performed on the models. For the structural tests of the scale-down models, tensile specimens of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene material that was used in the 3-D printing were prepared, and the material properties were evaluated by performing the tensile tests. The finite element analysis of fairlead chain stopper was performed by applying the material properties obtained from the tensile tests and the same load and boundary conditions as in the scale-down model structural tests. Through the finite element analysis, the structural weak parts on the fairlead chain stopper were reviewed. The structural model tests were performed considering the main load conditions of fairlead chain stopper, and the test results were compared to the finite element analysis. Through the results of this study, it was possible to experimentally verify the structural safety of the initial design of fairlead chain stopper. It is also judged that the study results can be usefully used to improve the structural strength of fairlead chain stopper in a detailed design stage.

  • In this paper, finite element analysis of a cycloidal pitch reducer for a 2 MW-class wind turbine is reviewed. The system is composed of one cycloid set, one spur gear set, an input shaft, an output shaft, and a housing. The system was also evaluated for stability by analyzing spur gear strength according to ISO 6336. An analysis of the natural vibration characteristics of the 2 MW-class wind turbine cycloid pitch reducer was performed with attention to critical speed with input mass unbalance, output mass unbalance, spur gear transmission error, cycloid gear transmission error, and excitation frequency.

Comparison Analysis of Turbulence Intensity and Fatigue Load of Onshore Wind Farms According to Terrain (지형에 따른 육상풍력발전단지 난류강도 및 피로 하중 비교 분석)

  • This study aimed to investigate differences in turbulence intensity and turbine loads among onshore wind farms located in various types of terrain. To achieve this, simulations were conducted for two onshore wind farms with identical wind turbines and capacity but situated on complex and flat terrains. The simulations used meteorological data gathered over a 10-year period from automatic weather stations nearest to the wind farms. WindSim and WindPRO software tools were employed for wind field and load analysis, respectively. The simulation results revealed that wind farm A, situated on complex terrain, exhibited significantly higher effective turbulence intensity than wind farm B on flat terrain, as expected. Consequently, the load indices of several wind turbines exceeded 100 % in wind farm A, indicating that the turbines could not reach their design lifespan. From the simulation study, aimed at reducing both the effective turbulence intensity and turbine loads, it became evident that while increasing turbine spacing could decrease effective turbulence intensity to some extent, it couldn't completely resolve the issue due to the inherently high ambient turbulence intensity on complex terrain. The problem with wind turbine loads could only be completely resolved by using wind turbines with a turbine class of A+, corresponding to a reference turbulence intensity of 0.18.

Structural Design on Small Scale Sandwich Composite Wind Turbine Blade

  • Even though the recent development trend of wind turbine systems has been focused on larger MW Classes, the small-scale wind turbine system has been continuously developed because it has some advantages due to easy personnel establishment and use with low cost and energy saving effect. This work is to propose a specific structural design and analysis procedure for development of a low noise 500W class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low wind speed region like Korea. The proposed structural feature has a skin-spar-foam sandwich composite structure with the E-glass/Epoxy face sheets and the Urethane foam core for lightness, structural stability, low manufacturing cost and easy manufacturing process. Moreover this type of structure has good behaviors for reduction of vibration and noise. Structural analysis including load cases, stress, deformation, buckling and vibration was performed using the Finite Element Method. In order to evaluate the designed blade structure the structural tests were done, and their test results were compared with the estimated results.

  • This study proposes a development result for the 1-kW class small wind turbine system, which is applicable to relatively low wind speed regions like Korea and has the variable pitch control mechanism. In the aerodynamic design of the wind turbine blade, parametric studies were carried out to determine an optimum aerodynamic configuration which is not only more efficient at low wind speed but whose diameter is not much larger than similar class other blades. A light composite structure, which can endure effectively various loads, was newly designed. In order to evaluate the structural design of the composite blade, the structural analysis was peformed by the finite element method. Moreover both structural safety and stability were verified through the full- scale structural test.

  • Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

  • This paper describes a conceptual design of 10 MW class gearless type superconducting synchronous generator for wind turbine. The main benefits of gearless type generator are decrease of the process of maintenance and loss caused by drive-train. The designed generator improves efficiency of high-capacity wind turbine by applying superconducting coil making high magnetic field. Conventional wind turbines were investigated for up-scaling of generator and the generator had been designed with estimated design parameters using a finite elements method analysis tool.

  • The purpose of the present study is to design a 500W-class micro scale composite wind turbine blade. The blade airfoil of FFA-W3-211 was selected to meet Korean weather condition. The skin-spar-f Dam sandwich type structure was adopted for improving buckling and vibration damping characteristics. The design loads were determined at wind speed of 25m/s. and the structural analysis was performed to confirm safety and stability from strength. buckling and natural frequency using the finite element code. NISA II [6]. The prototype was manufactured using the hand-lay up method and it was experimently tested using the sand bag loading method. In order to evaluate the design results. it was compared with experimental results. According to comparison results. the estimated results such as compressible stress. max tip deflection natural frequency and buckling load factor were well agreed with the experimental results.

Design of 3MW Class Outer Rotor Type PMSG for Wind Turbine (풍력발전용 3MW급 외부회전자형 영구자석 동기발전기 설계)

  • Over the last decade, wind turbine industry has rapidly increased around world. These days many parts of the wind generators are induction generator. But it has some problems such as gearbox failure, rotor excitation and maintenance. Thus many manufacturers are considered permanent magnet synchronous generator named PMSG and direct drive. PMSG uses NdFeB magnet has many the advantage compare with induction generator. In this study, 3MW class outer rotor type PMSG for wind turbine is proposed. The generator features 2.6m stator outer radius, 1200mm stator length, 81 pole pairs, 14 rated rpm, 42kN/$m^2$ shear force density and 94.2% efficiency. Design and analysis generator using FEM program. Then calculate and derivate no load voltage, losses, conductor temperature. To reduce total harmonic distortion and cogging torque, the stator is applied the stator skewing. And to evaluate the designed generator, compare with other generators by active mass per rating torque and torque density.

  • This paper describes the structural design and testing for 1.5kW class wind turbine composite blade. In order to calculate the equivalent material properties rule-of-mixture is applied. Lay-up sequence, ply thickness and ply angle are designed to satisfy the requirements for structural integrity. Structural analysis by using commercial software ABAQUS is performed to assess the static, buckling and vibration response. And to verify the structural analysis and design, the full scale structural test in flapwise direction was performed under single point loading according to loading conditions calculated by the aerodynamic analysis and Case H (Parked wind loading) in IEC 61400-2.
