  • The significance of renewable energy has been on the rise, as evidenced by the 3020 renewable energy plan and the 2050 carbon neutrality strategy, which seek to advance a low-carbon economy by implementing a power supply strategy centered around renewable energy sources. This study examines the wind resources on the west coast of South Korea and confirms the potential for wind power generation in the area. Wind speed data was collected from 22 automatic weather system stations and four light house automatic weather system stations provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration to evaluate potential sites for wind farms. Weibull distribution was used to analyze the wind data and calculate wind power density. Annual energy production and capacity factors were estimated for 15-20 MW-class large wind turbines through the height correction of observed wind speeds. These findings offer valuable information for selecting wind power generation sites, predicting economic feasibility, and determining optimal equipment capacity for future wind power generation sites in the region.

  • It is believed that offshore wind farms may satisfy an increasing portion of the energy demand in the next years. This paper presents a comparative study of the fatigue performances of tripod and jacket steel support structures for offshore wind turbines in waters of intermediate depth (20-50 m). A reference site at a water depth of 45 m in the North Atlantic Ocean is considered. The tripod and jacket support structures are conceived according to typical current design. The fatigue behavior is assessed in the time domain under combined stochastic wind and wave loading and the results are compared in terms of a lifetime damage equivalent load.

  • In order to clarify the characteristics of power performance and uncertainty of a wind turbine, an investigation was performed in Hangyeong wind farm, Jeju island, Korea. Data were collected for 12 months from Feb. 2, 2008 to Jan. 1, 2009. This study was conducted on the base of the International standard, and observed the methods of mesurement and evaluation form IEC 61400-12. As a result, power performance curve was calculated by measured data and compared with the sixth unit of VESTAS V90-3.0MW in Hangyeong wind farms. In consequence of this paper, uncertainty was estimated from 7% to 14% on the range of the average wind speed from 4m/s to 11m/s.

  • Wind turbine industry is the most developing field among other renewable energy industry. As expanding wind farms, noise is the big problem to solve. This study is about wind turbine noise measuring method based on IEC 61400-11. Sound pressure levels, 1/3-octave band levels, and low frequency sound pressure levels of a 3 MW wind turbine were measured and analyzed.

  • It is a crucial requirement to utilize an economical battery capacity for the wind energy conversion system. In this paper, the optimal BESS capacity is determined for the wind farm whose dispatched power is assigned by the min-max dispatching method. Based on a lifetime cost function that indicates the BESS cost spent to dispatch 1kWh wind energy into grid, the battery capacity can be optimized so as to obtain the minimum system operation cost. Moreover, the battery state of charge (SOC) is also managed to be in a safe operating range to ensure the system undamaged. In order to clarify the proposed optimizing method, a 3MW permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine model and real wind speed data measured each minute are investigated.

  • Wind energy is created in mega-sized wind farms situated kilometers off shore. In fact, two possibilities are considered for the transmission system between the offshore wind farm and the onshore grid: high-voltage direct current and high-voltage alternating current. From this point of view, the current paper aims to compare both systems for a 2 GW wind farm situated 80 km from the Point of Common Coupling on an economic basis using a discounted cash flow analysis. A tool is developed in Microsoft Excel to allow for quick insight in the variation of input parameters.

  • The energy produced by wind power generation is a clean energy product because it is acquired by using renewable resource. Wind power plants("wind farms), in Korea, have been built and operated as 345.6MW facilities from 2001 until now 2009. Nevertheless, environmental issues regarding construction of wind power plants have arisen. accordingly it is time to consider the environmental and social issues of wind power in accordance with the government's policy objectives of increased wind power production. In this study, we investigated the influence that noise and low frequency noise caused by Wind power plants have on neighborhood and residents. We also sought solutions to these issues. In order to analyze the issues of wind power facilities, we compared and examined precedents and the solutions for noise and low frequency noise in Europe, the United states and Japan. We intended to examine the influences of wind power facilities and propose alternative in dealing with these issues.

  • Finding promising wind farm sites in islands of Korea is performed in this study. Total ten islands that have been measuring wind speed and direction using automatic weather stations for at least ten years were subjects of this study. Conditions for finding suitable wind farm sites including wind resource and various exclusion factors were applied and two islands that were found not to be suitable for wind farms were excluded. Micositing of a single wind turbine for the remaining eight islands was performed to estimate the annual energy production and the capacity factor.. Based on the simulation results, the wind farm sites selected within the eight islands were found to be suitable for wind power. The capacity factors were varied between 22.3% and 33.0% for a 100 kW wind turbine having a hub height of 30 m.

  • In order to support the development of wind farms in Jejudo, a wind resource database for Jejudo has been established using a meteor-statistical analysis of KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) met-mast measurements and KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather data. The analysis included wind statistics, tower shading, an exposure category classification using satellite images, the effect of atmospheric stability on the wind profile exponent, and a correlation matrix of wind speed to gain an understanding of the meteorological correlation between long-term weather observation stations and short-term met-mast measurements. The wind resource database for Jejudo, is to be provided as an add-on to Google $Earth^{TM}$, which is expected to be utilized as a guideline for the selection of an appropriate reference site for long-term correction in the next wind farm development project.

  • Modelling and simulating the wind power intermittent behaviour are the basis of the planning and scheduling studies concerning wind power integration. The wind power outputs are evidently correlated in space and time and bring challenges in characterizing their behaviour. This paper provides a methodology to model and simulate the clustered wind power considering its spatio-temporal correlations using the theory of copula. The sampling approach captures the complex spatio-temporal connections among the wind farms by employing a conditional density function calculated using multidimensional copula function. The empirical study of real wind power measurement shows how the wind power outputs are correlated and how these correlations affect the overall uncertainty of clustered wind power output. The case study validates the simulation technique by comparing the simulated results with the real measurements.
