In this study, two steady RANS turbulence models (SST k-ω and Realizable k-ε) and four unsteady turbulence models (URANS SST k-ω and Realizable k-ε, SST-SAS, and SST-IDDES) are evaluated with respect to their capacity to predict crosswind characteristics on high-speed trains (HSTs). All of the numerical simulations are compared with the wind tunnel values and LES results to ensure the accuracy of each turbulence model. Specifically, the surface pressure distributions, time-averaged aerodynamic coefficients, flow fields, and computational cost are studied to determine the suitability of different models. Results suggest that the predictions of the pressure distributions and aerodynamic forces obtained from the steady and transient RANS models are almost the same. In particular, both SAS and IDDES exhibits similar predictions with wind tunnel test and LES, therefore, the SAS model is considered an attractive alternative for IDDES or LES in the crosswind study of trains. In addition, if the computational cost needs to be significantly reduced, the RANS SST k-ω model is shown to provide relatively reasonable results for the surface pressures and aerodynamic forces. As a result, the RANS SST k-ω model might be the most appropriate option for the expensive aerodynamic optimizations of trains using machine learning (ML) techniques because it balances solution accuracy and resource consumption.

The unexpected wind over the Mt. Hwawang on 9 February 2009 was deadly when many spectators were watching a traditional event to burn dried grasses and the fire went out of control due to the wind. We analyzed the fatal wind based on wind flow simulations over a digitized complex terrain of the mountain with a localized heating area using a three dimensional computational fluid dynamics model, CFD_NIMR_SNU (Computational Fluid Dynamics_National Institute of Meteorological Research_Seoul National University). Three levels of fire intensity were simulated: no fire, $300^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ of surface temperature at the site on fire. The surface heat accelerated vertical wind speed by as much as $0.7\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $300^{\circ}C$) and $1.1\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $600^{\circ}C$) at the center of the fire. Turbulent kinetic energy was increased by the heat itself and by the increased mechanical force, which in turn was generated by the thermal convection. The heating together with the complex terrain and strong boundary wind induced the unexpected high wind conditions with turbulence at the mountain. The CFD_NIMR_SNU model provided valuable analysis data to understand the consequences of the fatal mountain fire. It is suggested that the place of fire was calm at the time of the fire setting due to the elevated terrain of the windward side. The suppression of wind was easily reversed when there was fire, which caused updraft of hot air by the fire and the strong boundary wind. The strong boundary wind in conjunction with the fire event caused the strong turbulence, resulting in many fire casualties. The model can be utilized in turbulence forecasting over a small area due to surface fire in conjunction with a mesoscale weather model to help fire prevention at the field.
As constantly increasing wind power penetrates power grid, wind power plants (WPPs) are exerting a direct influence on the traditional power system. Most of WPPs are using variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) wind turbines equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) due to their high efficiency over other wind turbine generators (WTGs). Therefore, the analysis of DFIG has attracted considerable attention. Precisely measuring optimum reference speed is basis of utilized maximum wind power in electric power generation. If the measurement of wind speed can be easily taken, the reference of rotation speed can be easily calculated by known system's parameters. However, considering the varying wind speed at different locations of blade, the turbulence and tower shadow also increase the difficulty of its measurement. The aim of this study is to design fuzzy controllers to replace the wind speedometer to track the optimum generator speed based on the errors of generator output power and rotation speed in varying wind speed. Besides, this paper proposes the fuzzy adaptive PID control to replace traditional PID control under rated wind speed in variable-pitch wind turbine, which can detect and analyze important aspects, such as unforeseeable conditions, parameters delay and interference in the control process, and conducts online optimal adjustment of PID parameters to fulfill the requirement of variable pitch control system.
To address the uncertainty of the flight trajectories caused by the turbulence and gustiness of the wind field over the roof and in the wake of a building, a 3-D probabilistic trajectory model of flat-type wind-borne debris is developed in this study. The core of this methodology is a 6 degree-of-freedom deterministic model, derived from the governing equations of motion of the debris, and a Monte Carlo simulation engine used to account for the uncertainty resulting from vertical and lateral gust wind velocity components. The influence of several parameters, including initial wind speed, time step, gust sampling frequency, number of Monte Carlo simulations, and the extreme gust factor, on the accuracy of the proposed model is examined. For the purpose of validation and calibration, the simulated results from the 3-D probabilistic trajectory model are compared against the available wind tunnel test data. Results show that the maximum relative error between the simulated and wind tunnel test results of the average longitudinal position is about 20%, implying that the probabilistic model provides a reliable and effective means to predict the 3-D flight of the plate-type wind-borne debris.

Wind load is one of the major design loads for the hull and mooring of offshore floating structures, especially due to much larger windage area above water than under water. By virtue of extreme design philosophy, fully turbulent flow assumption can be justified and the hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow remain almost constant which implies the wind load is less sensitive to the Reynolds number around the design wind speed than wind profile. In the perspective of meteorology, wind profile used for wind load estimation is a part of Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL), especially maritime ABL (MBL) and have been studied how to implement the profile without losing turbulence properties numerically by several researchers. In this study, the MBL is implemented using an open source CFD toolkit, OpenFOAM and extended to unstable ABL as well as neutral ABL referred to as NPD profile. The homogeneity of the wind profile along wind direction is examined, especially with NPD profile. The NPD profile was applied to a semi-submersible rig and estimated wind load was compared with the results from wind tunnel test.
The effect of mean angle of wind attack on the flutter critical wind speed of two generic bridge deck cross-sections, viz, one closed box type streamlined section (deck-1) and closed box trapezoidal bluff type section with extended flanges/overhangs (deck-2) type of section have been studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based forced vibration simulation method. Owing to the importance of the effect of the amplitude of forcing oscillation on the flutter onset, its effect on the flutter derivatives and flutter onset have been studied, especially at non-zero mean angles of wind attack. The flutter derivatives obtained have been used to evaluate flutter critical wind speeds and flutter index of the deck sections at non-zero mean angles of wind attack studied and the same have been validated with those based on experimental results reported in literature. The value of amplitude of forcing oscillation in torsional degree of freedom for CFD based simulations is suggested to be in the range of 0.5° to 2°, especially for bluff bridge deck sections. Early onset of flutter from numerical simulations, thereby conservative estimate of occurrence of instability has been observed from numerical simulations in case of bluff bridge deck section. The study aids in gaining confidence and the extent of applicability of CFD during early stages of bridge design, especially towards carrying out studies on mean incident wind effects.

According to the Unmanned aircraft system Traffic Management (UTM), drones are permitted to fly up to 150m above ground, which is located in the atmospheric boundary layer where there is considerable wind fluctuation due to turbulence. Although it is difficult to predict when turbulence will occur drone aviation safety could be enhanced by having a better understanding of the characteristics of vertical profile of wind in the flight area. We used wind lidar (WIndMast 350M) to observe vertical profiles of wind at the test site for aviation meteorological observation equipment located near Incheon International Airport in July and September, 2022. In this study, we utilized the observed wind profile data to propose a technique for obtaining information that could help improve the drone aviation safety. The Fourier transform analysis is used to evaluate the temporal characteristics of the horizontal wind speed at various vertical levels up to 350m. We also examined the relative contribution of the variance of wind having scales of less than an hour, a crucial scale for drone flight, to the variance of wind having all scales at each vertical altitude for days with and without precipitation.

Although the cable-stayed bridges with two I-type girders inherently do not have good aerodynamic characteristics, a lot of the bridges with this type girders are constructed in Korea recently because of an economical merit. This paper investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of the cable-stayed bridges with two I-type girders. Section model tests were conducted in order to investigate the aerodynamic behaviors of this section with varying of the angles of attack, turbulence intensity and damping ratios. Two deck section configurations with different torsional stiffness were studied under construction and after completion respectively. Three types of the fairings were investigated to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the bridges. The result of this study showed that the traditional section model test in uniform flow estimates the aerodynamic behavior rather pessimistically. The wind induced responses of the bridges were severely varied in accordance with the turbulence intensity and the structural damping ratio. The proposed fairing reduced the magnitude of the vortex-shedding vibrations and buffeting responses. It also increased the wind speed at which flutter occurs. It is expected that these investigations would provide a lot of information for the design of the cable stayed bridges with two I-type girders regarding wind resistance.

This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuation wind velocity spectrum and turbulence characteristics in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with typhoon wind velocity about 2003 (Maemi) 2010 (Kompasu) 2012 (Tembin). The purpose of this paper is to present spectral analysis for longitudinal component fluctuating velocity obtained by Monte Carlo Simulation method. In the processes of analysis, the longitudinal velocity spectrums are compared widely used spectrum models with horizontal wind velocity observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration (KMA) and properties of the atmospheric air for typhoon fluctuating wind data are estimated to parameters with turbulency intensity, shear velocity, probability distribution and roughness length.

Three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of flow around a hipped-roof building representative of UK inland conditions are conducted. Unsteady simulations are performed using three variations of the k-ϵ RANS turbulence model namely, the Standard, Realizable, and RNG models, and their predictive capability is measured against current European building standards. External pressure coefficients and wind loading are found through the BS 6399-2:1997 standard (obsolete) and the current European standards (BS EN 1991-1-4:2005 and A1:20101). The current European standard provides a more conservative wind loading estimate compared to its predecessor and the k-ϵ RNG model falls within 15% of the value predicted by the current standard. Surface shear stream-traces and Q-criterion were used to analyze the flow physics for each model. The RNG model predicts immediate flow separation leading to the creation of vortical structures on the hipped-roof along with a larger separation region. It is observed that the Realizable model predicts the side vortex to be a result of both the horseshoe vortex and the flow deflected off it. These model-specific aerodynamic features present the most disparity between building standards at leeward roof locations. Finally, pedestrian comfort and safety criteria are studied where the k-ϵ Standard model predicts the most ideal pedestrian conditions and the Realizable model yields the most conservative levels.
