  • In this study, the PV output and module temperature values were predicted using the Meteorological Agency data and compared with actual data, weather, solar radiation, ambient temperature, and wind speed. The forecast accuracy by weather was the lowest in the data on a clear day, which had the most data of the day when it was snowing or the sun was hit at dawn. The predicted accuracy of the module temperature and the amount of power generation according to the amount of insolation decreased as the amount of insolation increased, and the predicted accuracy according to the ambient temperature decreased as the module temperature increased as the ambient temperature increased and the amount of power generated lowered the ambient temperature. As for wind speed, the predicted accuracy decreased as the wind speed increased for both module temperature and power generation, but it was difficult to define the correlation because wind speed was insignificant than the influence of other weather conditions.

  • The present study considers the prediction of wind-induced heel of cruise ship and its stabilization. Wind load in ocean exerts on the surface of superstructure of cruise ship, which causes the heel moment on the ship. The calculation of wind load starts from choosing wind speed profile, so that the logarithmic wind profile model is applied in this study. Heel moment by wind load is calculated by adopting approximate formulation and applied to the ship motion analysis in time domain. Motion stabilizers, such as stabilizing fin and U-tube tank, are considered to reduce the heel effect as well as excessive roll motion. From this study, it is expected that the present method can be applied to the prediction and stabilization of the heel motion of cruise ships.

  • In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.

  • Sensitivity experiments of WRF model using different planetary boundary layer (PBL) and land surface model (LSM) parameterizations are evaluated for prediction of wind fields within the surface layer. The experiments were performed with three PBL schemes (YSU, Pleim, MYJ) in combination with three land surface models (Noah, RUC, Pleim). The WRF model was conducted on a nested grid from 27-km to 1-km horizontal resolution. The simulations validated wind speed and direction at 10 m and 80 m above ground level at a 1-km spatial resolution over the South Korea. Statistical verification results indicate that Pleim and YSU PBL schemes are in good agreement with observations at 10 m above ground level, while the MYJ scheme produced predictions similar to the observed wind speed at 80 m above ground level. LSM comparisons indicate that the RUC model performs best in predicting 10-m and 80-m wind speed. It is found that MYJ (PBL) - RUC (LSM) simulations yielded the best results for wind field in the surface layer. The choice of PBL and LSM parameterization will contribute to more accurate wind predictions for air quality studies and wind power using WRF.

  • When oil spills occur in the ocean because of a ship collision or grounding, the oil in the sea will spread to the coastline. To effectively and promptly prevent such an oil spread, the prediction of the direction and speed of the spreading oil must be made. By applying the coastal wave diffusion theory with a consideration of the effects of wind and current, the oil spreading direction and speed can be predicted promptly so that the National Disaster Prevention System can effectively and promptly take countermeasures against the attack and contamination of the coastline by such oil bands.

  • The influence of transportation on air quality has been elevating in urban area. Air pollutants from automobiles cause primary and secondary air pollution, and need to be tightly controlled. In this study, the effect of automobile air pollutants on highway vicinity area was evaluated by the comparison of field measurement. and target was for modeling using CALINE3, NO2 was the target for this work. It was found that the concentration predicted by CALINE3 is overestimated at low wind speed and input data of wind speed requires correction. Based on the measured data, the wind speed was modified by effective wind speed equation [Ue=U+0.24·EXP(-pxU)], and there after the accuracy of CALINE3 calculation was improved neighborhood area of highway. It was also observed that weather conditions and traffic volume affect the concentration of air pollution. Finally, the NO2 effect of automobile air pollutants on the vicinity area of highway proved to be up to 400∼600m from the highway.

  • Factors that have influence on solar power generation are specified into three aspects such as meteorological, geographical factors as well as equipment installation. Meteorological factors influence the most among the three. Insolation, sunshine hours, and cloud directly influence on solar power generation, whereas temperature and wind speed have impacts on equipment installation. This paper provides explanation over temperature-wind speed equation by calculating influence of temperature and wind speed on equipment installation. In order to conduct a research, pyranometer, anemometer, air thermometer, module thermometer are installed in 2MWp solar power plant located in South Cholla province, so that real-time meteorological data and generating amount can be analyzed through monitoring system. Besides, if existing and new methods are applied together, accuracy of prediction for generating amount is improved.

  • In order to clarify predictive accuracy for the wind resource predicted by running WindPRO(Ver. 2.5) which is software for wind farm design developed by EMD from Denmark, an investigation was carried out at the northeast region of Jeju island. The Hangwon, Susan and Hoichun sites of Jeju island were selected for this study. The measurement period of wind at the sites was for one year. As a result, when the sites had different energy roses, though the two Wind Statistics made by STATGEN module were used for the prediction, it was difficult to exactly predict the energy rose at a given site. On the other hand, when the two Wind Statistics were used to predict the average wind speed, the wind power density and the annual energy production, the relative error was under ${\pm}20%$ which improved more than that when using only one Wind Statistics.

  • Airborne-pests can be introduced into Korea from overseas areas by wind, which can cause considerable damage to major crops. Meteorological models have been used to estimate the wind trajectories of airborne insects. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of input settings on the prediction of areas where airborne pests arrive by wind. The wind trajectories were predicted using the HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. The HYSPLIT model was used to track the wind dispersal path of particles under the assumption that brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) was introduced into Korea from sites where the pest was reported in China. Meteorological input data including instantaneous and average wind speed were generated using meso-scale numerical weather model outputs for the domain where China, Korea, and Japan were included. In addition, the calculation time intervals were set to 1, 30, and 60 minutes for the wind trajectory calculation during early June in 2019 and 2020. It was found that the use of instantaneous and average wind speed data resulted in a considerably large difference between the arrival areas of airborne pests. In contrast, the spatial distribution of arrival areas had a relatively high degree of similarity when the time intervals were set to be 1 minute. Furthermore, these dispersal patterns predicted using the instantaneous wind speed were similar to the regions where the given pest was observed in Korea. These results suggest that the impact assessment of input settings on wind trajectory prediction would be needed to improve the reliability of an approach to predict regions where airborne-pest could be introduced.

  • Darrieus wind turbine blade is one of the vertical wind power system in which the lift of blade is used. In the calculation of wind power for the type of that, the multiple streamtubes method is known as an effective method. But it has big difference in the region of higher tip speed ratio because the incoming air velocity is used in the calculation of lift. The incoming air velocity is reduced from inlet to outlet continually by transferring energy to the wind blade. In this study, the air velocity on the blade, which is called blade velocity, is obtained with newly developed algorithm and used to determine the lift. And it is verified that applying blade velocity on the lift calculation cause the power prediction to improve dramatically in the region of higher tip speed ratio.
