We have investigated the seasonal characteristics of surface turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station from 2005 to 2006. Both 10Hz and 30 minutes flux data are quality controled, and tilt correction is performed in 10Hz data before quality control. The turbulent fluxes of open sea shows clear seasonal variations, though diurnal variations are barely shown. The seasonal ratio of stable and unstable conditions are closely related to the temperature difference between sea surface and air. In stable and semi-stable condition, latent and sensible heat fluxes have very small values without any relationship with wind speed. Though friction velocity shows slightly increasing trend with wind speed, it has many outliers. In unstable condition, turbulent fluxes increased with wind speed. Especially, latent heat flux increased rapidly during DJF. The latent heat flux at high wind speeds is more scatter.
The probabilistic characteristics of wind loads have been analyzed using statistical data on wind speeds, pressure coefficient, exposure coefficient, and gust factor. The wind speed data collected at 25 nationwide weather stations have been modified to be consistent in measuring height, exposure condition as well as averaging time. Having performed Monte Carlo simulation for various heights and site conditions, the statistical models of wind loads were determined, in which Type-I extreme value distribution has been applied. The models also incorporate a reduction factor of 0.85 to account for the reduced probability that the maximum wind speed will occur in a direction most unfavorable to the response of structure.

The aerodynamic loads at the blade hub and the drive shaft for 1MW horizontal axis wind turbine are calculated numerically. The geometric shape of the blade such as chord length and twist angle can be obtained fran the aerodynamic optimization procedure. Various airfoil data, that is thick airfoils at hub side and thin airfoils at tip side, are distributed along the spanwise direction of the rotor blade. Under the wind data fulfilling design load cases based on the IEC61400-1, all of the shear forces, bending moments at the hub and the low speed shaft of the drive train are obtained by using the FAST code. It shows that shear forces and bending moments have a periodic. trend. These oscillating aerodynamic loads will lead to the fatigue problem at both of the hub and drive train From the load analysis the maximum shear forces and bending moments are generated when wind turbine generator system operates in the case of the extreme speed wind condition.

Forest fire spread and intensity were modeled as a function of wind and fuel. Spread rate and intensity of forest fire were related to weight and thickness of forest fuel beds and to wind speed. Forest fire spread rate and fire intensity were differentiated according to wind speed. Rapid wind speed causes a faster forest fire spread rate and greater fire intensity than does slow wind speed. Relative burning time of the fire from beginning to end in the model was 161 sec at a wind speed of 0.5 m/sec and 146 sec at 1m/sec on the model. Average forest lire spread rate was 0.014 m/sec at a wind speed of 0.5 m/sec and 0.020 m/sec at 1m/sec. Average fire intensity was 0.183 ㎾/m at a wind speed of 0.5 m/sec, 0.259 ㎾/m at 1m/sec. Fire intensity was greater when forest fire spread rate was rapid.

This paper presents the simulation modeling and analysis of variable wind speed turbine system(VWTS) using the doubly fed induction generator(DFIG) connected the back to back converter system in the rotor side. In the simulation, using the model system which has the 660[kW] rated power, blade control and the dual converter system are modeled for verifying the control characteristics. The VWTS is controlled by the optimal pitch angle for maximum output power under the rated wind speed, and for the rated output power over the rated wind speed. And also power factor is controlled by the reactive power. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulation results are compared with the actual data from the V47 VWTS located in Hangwon wind farm in Jeju-Do. According to the comparison of these results, this method shows excellent performance.

Experiments were conducted to estimate the performance of drag force type vertical axis wind turbine with an opening-shutting rotor. It was operated by the difference in drag force generated on both sides of the blades. The rotational speed was measured by a tachometer in a wind tunnel and the tunnel wind speed was measured by using a pilot-static tube and a micro manometer. The performance test for a prototype was accomplished by calculating power, power coefficient, torque coefficient from the measurement of torque and rpm by a dynamometer controller. Various design parameters, such as the number of blades(B), blade aspect ratio(W/R), angle of blades$(\alpha)$ and drag coefficient acting on a blade, were considered for optimal conditions. At the experiment of miniature model, maximum efficiency was found at N=15, $\alpha=60^{\circ}$ and W/R=0.32. The measured test variables were power, torque, rotational speed, and wind speeds. The data presented are in the form of power and torque coefficients as a function of tip-speed ratio V/U. Maximum power was found in case of $\Omega=0.33$, when the power and torque coefficient were 0.14 and 0.37 respectively. Comparing model test with prototype test, similarity law by advance ratio for vertical axis wind turbine was confirmed.
Sea surface wind is one of the most fundamental variables for understanding diverse marine phenomena. Although scatterometers have produced global wind field data since the early 1990's, the data has been used limitedly in oceanic applications due to it slow spatial resolution, especially at coastal regions. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is capable to produce high resolution wind field data. KOMPSAT-5 is the first Korean satellite equipped with X-band SAR instrument and is able to retrieve the sea surface wind. This study presents the validation results of sea surface wind derived from the KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data for the first time. We collected 18 KOMPSAT-5 ES mode data to produce a matchup database collocated with buoy stations. In order to calculate the accurate wind speed, we preprocessed the SAR data, including land masking, speckle noise reduction, and ship detection, and converted the in-situ wind to 10-m neutral wind as reference wind data using Liu-Katsaros-Businger (LKB) model. The sea surface winds based on XMOD2 show root-mean-square errors of about $2.41-2.74m\;s^{-1}$ depending on backscattering coefficient conversion equations. In-depth analyses on the wind speed errors derived from KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data reveal the existence of diverse potential error factors such as image quality related to range ambiguity, discrete and discontinuous distribution of incidence angle, change in marine atmospheric environment, impacts on atmospheric gravity waves, ocean wave spectrum, and internal wave.
The sea surface wind field has long been obtained from satellite scatterometers or passive microwave radiometers. However, the importance of satellite altimeter-derived wind speed has seldom been addressed because of the outstanding capability of the scatterometers. Satellite altimeter requires the accurate wind speed data, measured simultaneously with sea surface height observations, to enhance the accuracy of sea surface height through the correction of sea state bias. This study validates the wind speeds from the satellite altimeters (GFO, Jason-1, Envisat, Jason-2, Cryosat-2, SARAL) and analyzes characteristics of errors. In total, 1504 matchup points were produced using the wind speed data of Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) buoys at Marado and Oeyeondo stations for 10 years from December 2007 to May 2016. The altimeter wind speed showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of about $1.59m\;s^{-1}$ and a negative bias of $-0.35m\;s^{-1}$ with respect to the in-situ wind speed. Altimeter wind speeds showed characteristic biases that they were higher (lower) than in-situ wind speeds at low (high) wind speed ranges. Some tendency was found that the difference between the maximum and minimum value gradually increased with distance from the buoy stations. For the improvement of the accuracy of altimeter wind speed, an equation for correction was derived based on the characteristics of errors. In addition, the significance of altimeter wind speed on the estimation of sea surface height was addressed by presenting the effect of the corrected wind speeds on the sea state bias values of Jason-1.
Of the new and renewable energies currently being pursued domestically, wind energy, together with solar photovoltaic energy, is a new core growth driver industry of Korea. As of May 2012, 33 wind farms at a capacity of 347.8MW are in operation domestically. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze how efficiently each operational wind farm is utilizing its power generation capacity and the weather resource of wind. For this purpose, the study proceeded in 3 phases. In phase 1, ANOVA analysis was performed for each wind farm, thereby categorizing farms according to capacity, region, generator manufacturer, and quantity of weather resources available and comparing and analyzing the differences among their operating efficiency. In phase 2, for comparative analysis of the operating efficiency of each farm, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to calculate the efficiency index of individual farms. In the final phase, phase 3, regression analysis was used to analyze the effects of weather resources and the operating efficiency of the wind farm on the power generation per unit equipment. Results shows that for wind power generation, only a few farms had relatively high levels of operating efficiency, with most having low efficiency. Regression analysis showed that for wind farms, a 1 hour increase in wind speeds of at least 3m/s resulted in an average increase of 0.0000045MWh in power generation per 1MW generator equipment capacity, and a unit increase in the efficiency scale was found to result in approximately 0.20MWh power generation improvement per unit equipment.

A Propeller-Anemometer is an instrument used specifically, to measure the wind speed. The accurate measurement of the wind speed is vitally important such required by any weather stations. In this research, the measurand of the instrumentation was the rotational speed of the propeller and the instrumentation result or output data was wind velocity. The speed measured was recorded digitally in the computer by using specific software. A specific sensor used to measure a variable by converting information of the variable (rotational speed of the propeller) into a dependent signal such as electrical signal in form of voltage. The development of Propeller-Anemometer involved few sets of instrumentation process and equipment. It included three major parts, mechanical, electronics and computer. The main instrumentation processes were physical and signal interfacing, signal conditioning, logic interfacing, data transmission to computer and processing the data. Generally, this paper presents the overall concept and design of Propeller-Anemometer Instrumentation. However, an emphasis was mainly in designing and building the interfacing system, hardware and software. Basically, for the first phase of the development, this project designed and built the RS232 terminal using Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC), PIC16F873. The hardware can be interfaced to computer or other compatible devices. This routine converted input voltage from the circuit to speed (velocity) and transmitted them afterwards to the target device by using the RS232 transmission protocol. This implementation implied a computer display as visual interface. For the purpose of this paper, RS232 data transmission was carried out using a Microsoft Visual Basic software routine.
