The renewable resource are getting more attentions with increased concerns on the depletion of fossil fuels and several environmental issues like emission problem. Wind power is a representative option among several renewable sources and the generation capacity using wind power is being increased. However, the wind generation is so volatile on its output characteristic, so it is required to assess the grid impact of wind power generation by measuring the fluctuation effect more precisely. This paper proposes the method for measuring the generation output according to IEC 61400-21(Measurement and assessment of power quality characteristics of grid connected wind turbines) to assess the power quality of wind turbine generation. In addition, it shows an application case to a small-scale wind power generator. In the case study, it suggests a structure design of the proposed measurement instrument both on hardware and software aspects, which is composed of a remote monitoring & data analysis program and an FPGA based real-time signal processing device.
This paper proposes a control method for maintaining the energy level for a supercapacitor energy storage system coupled with a wind generator to stabilize wind power output. Although wind power is green and clean energy source, disadvantage of the renewable energy output power is fluctuation. In order to mitigate the fluctuating output power, supercapacitor energy storage system (SCESS) and wind power simulator is developed. A remaining energy supercapacitor (RESC) control is introduced and analyzed to smooth for short-term fluctuating power and maintain the supercapacitor voltage within the designed operating range in the steady as well as transient state. When the average and fluctuating component of power increases instantaneously, the RESC compensates fluctuating power and the variation of fluctuating power is reduced 100% to 30% at 5kW power. Furthermore, supercapacitor voltage is maintained within the operating voltage range and near 50% of total energy. Feasibility of SCESS with RESC control is verified through simulation and experiment.
A 30kw Dual rotor Turbines HAWT/VAWT combined wind turbine system that can drastically enhance the power production capability compared to conventional Single Rotor Turbine HAWT system. The combined system that takes advantage of strong point of both horizontal and vertical Axis wind turbine system developed by a venture firm KOWINTEC of Chonbuk national university. The HAWT/VAWT hybrid system has been successfully field tested and commercial operating since Feb. 12, 2001 in Hae-chang rest park, Bu-an county near the Sae Man-Kum Sea Dike. This paper will briefly describe the field test results performance and a special aerodynamic structure with bevel-planetary gear box of Dual Rotor Wind Turbine system.
When referring to weight, volume, and efficiency, a SuperConducting Synchronous Generator (SCSG) is definitely superior to conventional generators as a large-scale wind power generation system. The SCSG is connected to a full power converter that transmits the energy from the SCSG to the power grid. To reduce the current stress and system cost, the SCSG which has nine-phase armature windings with three converters is used. This paper deals with a comparative analysis of 10 MW superconducting wind power generators with three-phase and nine-phase armature windings. The stator windings of SCSGs are of various types. Using the finite element method, SCSGs are analyzed and compared in terms of the weight and volume of SCSGs, the total length of the superconducting wire, harmonics, torque performance, and efficiency. The analyzed results will be effectively utilized to design large-scale superconducting generators for wind power generation systems.
Load flow and short circuit fault transients of a power distribution system with wind turbines as dispersed generation units is presented. Usage of renewable energies such as wind is already a small part of total installed power system in medium and low voltage networks. In this paper, a radial power distribution system with wind turbines is simulated using DIgSILENT PowerFactory software for their influence on load flow and short circuit fault transients. Short fault occurring in dispersed generation systems causes some problems for the system and costumers such as fault level increase or the problems of sudden fluctuations in the current, voltage, power and torque of the double fed induction machine utilized in the wind turbines which have been studied and investigated.
Reactive power support is considered to be necessary for dealing with a voltage stability issue with wind turbine system employing squirrel-cage induction generator(SCIG). This paper analyses steady-state characteristics of the SCIG wind turbine system by simulating torque-slip characteristics of SCIG with respect to variations of interconnecting network strength and generator terminal voltage. It also presents dynamics analysis of SCIG wind turbine system on Simulink to investigate the impact of static var compensator(SVC) and static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) on transient stability enhancement. It analysed transient stability with varying fault duration times and compared the transient stability characteristics with varying rated capacities of SVC and STATCOM. It is shown that the STATCOM has a better performance and reactive power support compared to SVC.
Combined generation system of Photovoltaic and wind generation have shortcoming that is different output power according to change of weather. So, the combined generation system is required backup system that such as a storage battery to supply energy, when not enough photovoltaic and wind power source for power supply equally and continually, because the energy source is changeable and stable through change of weather as irradiation, temperature, wind speed, wind direction, seasons, etc..
Construction of wind power plant is rapidly increasing since Jeju is known as the most suitable regarding wind power plants in Korea. But implementing wind power generation inevitably introduces new challenges due to its intermittent nature. In the paper, it is introduced the influence analysis and Han-Kyung wind power plants contribution on Jeju power system.

A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.
An investigation on lightning characteristics and damage to wind turbines was performed on Jeju and Gangwon regions. The lightning data from January 2010 to September 2013 detected by IMPACT ESP were collected and analyzed in detail. Hangyeong and Seongsan wind farms of Jeju province and Taebaek, Changjuk, Taegisan and Gangwon wind farms of Gangwon province were selected for this study. Lightning rates and lightning damage events at the six wind farms were compared with each other. Lightning maps for the two regions were drawn using lightning frequency data. As a result, lightning frequency of Gangwon region was higher than that of Jeju region, while lightning strength of Gangwon was weaker than that of Jeju. Lightning rates were assessed to be good for all of the six wind farms. No lightning damage to wind turbines occurred at the two wind farms of Jeju, while some lightning damage to wind turbines took place at the four wind farms of Gangwon.
