  • This paper proposes active power control and frequency support control schemes of wind turbine generation system by using modified Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator(PMSG). Most wind turbine generation system is completely decoupled from the power system and power output control with pitch control. According to the frequency deviation, however, MPPT control can not contribute to the frequency change of the power system due to its active power output control. For solving this, the de-loaded(DL) control scheme is constructed for the frequency support control, which is based on applying the active power output control in the rotor speed control of PMSG. The rotor speed by used in the proposed DL control scheme is increased more than the optimal rotor speed of MPPT, and then this speed improvement increases the saved kinetic energy(KE). In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, the case studies have been performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the proposed active power output control scheme(DL control and KE discharge control) works properly and the frequency response ability of the power system can be also improved with the frequency support of wind farm.

  • In this paper, the Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) control of the small scale wind power generation system with a three-phase diode rectifier and the grid-connected inverter is studied. Without the need for the converter circuits to control speed of the generator, it is economical and the structure is simple. Compared with existing systems, it can be to reduce the power semiconductor switches and passive elements, and to implement the MPPT control with only DC-Link voltage control of the grid-connected inverter. In order to allow MPPT control without the characteristic information of the wind turbine, the P&O algorithm is applied, and these are verified by the simulation and experiment.

  • High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) synchronous generators can be designed with either an air-core type or iron-core type. The air-core type has higher efficiency under rated rotating speed and load than the iron-core type because of the iron losses which may produce much heat. However, the total length of HTS wire in the air-core type is longer than the iron-core type because the generated magnetic flux density of the air-core type is low. This paper deals with designs of 10 MW air-core and iron-core HTS wind power generators for wind turbines. Fully air-core, partially iron-core, and fully iron-core HTS generators are designed, and various stator winding methods in the three HTS generators are also considered, such as short-pitch concentrated winding, full-pitch concentrated winding, short-pitch distributed winding, and full-pitch distributed winding. These HTS generators are analyzed using a 3D finite elements method program. The analysis results of the HTS generators are discussed in detail, and the results will be effectively utilized for large-scale wind power generation systems.

  • Wind energy is currently the fastest growing source of renewable energy used for electrical generation around the world. Wind farms are adding a significant amount of electrical generation capacity. The increase in the number of wind farms has led to the need for more effective operation and maintenance. CMS(Condition Monitoring System) can be used to aid plant operator in achieving these goals. Its aim is to provide operators with information regarding th e health of their machine, which in turn, can help them improve operation efficiency. In this work, wind turbine fault diagnostic algorithm which can diagnose the mass unbalance and aerodynamic asymmetry of the blades is proposed. Proposed diagnostic algorithm utilizes both FFT(Fast Feurier Transform) of the signal from accelerometers installed inside of nacelle and simple diagnostic logic. Furthermore, to verify the applicability of the proposed system, 3W small sized wind turbine system is tested and physical experiments are carried out.

  • The number of wind generation installations are growing substantially in Jeju, Korea. Many of these installations are significant in size and directly connected to the distribution system. In these distributed applications, it is not uncommon for the turbines to be connected near the end of a long rural distribution feeder from which end-users are served. Therefore, utility grid interconnection standards for interconnecting non-utility distributed generation systems are essential to both power system company and generation company. In this paper, it is investigated the power quality of Sungsan substation bus connected to Hangwon wind power generation farm.

  • As wind has become one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources, the key issue of wind energy conversion systems is how to efficiently operate the wind turbines in a wide range of wind speeds. The wind speed has a huge impact on the dynamic response of wind turbine. For this purpose, many control algorithms are in need for a method to measure wind speed to increase performance. Unfortunately, no accurate measurement of the effective wind speed is online available from direct measurements, which means that it must be estimated in order to make such control methods applicable in practice. In this paper, a new method based on Kalman filter and artificial neural network is presented for the estimation of the effective wind speed. To verify the performance of the proposed scheme, some simulation studies are carried out.

  • A wind generator (WG) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system is presented here. It comprises of a variable-speed wind generator, a high-efficiency boost-type dc/dc converter and a control unit. The advantages of the aimed system are that it does not call for the knowledge of the wind speed or the optimal power characteristics and that it operates at a variable speed, thus providing high efficiency. The WG operates at variable speed and thus suffers lower stress on the shafts and gears compared to constant-speed systems. It results in a better exploitation of the available wind energy, especially in the low wind-speed range of 2.5-4.5 m/s. It does not depend on the WG wind and rotor-speed ratings or the dc/dc converter power rating. Higher reliability, lower complexity and cost, and less mechanical stress of the WG. It can be applied to battery-charging applications.

  • This study proposes a parallel operation strategy for small wind turbine systems. A small wind turbine system consists of blade, permanent magnet synchronous generator, three-phase diode rectifier, DC/DC buck converter, and the battery load. This configuration has reliability, simple control algorithm, high efficiency, and low cost. In spite of these advantages, the system stops when unexpected failures occur. Possible failures can be divided into mechanical and electrical parts. The proposed strategy focuses on the failure of electrical parts, which is verified by numerical analysis through equivalent circuit and acquired general formula of small wind power generation systems. Simulation and experimental results prove its efficiency and usefulness.

  • An electric power compensation system for a DC transmission system with an integrated wind turbine generator is proposed. The proposed compensation system consists of a synchronous generator and a duplex reactor. This apparatus is connected to the sending-end circuit of the DC transmission system. A set of steady-state equations of the system is first derived. Then, the effect of the duplex reactor, which can eliminate the sending-end grid current distortion due to commutation of the converter, is explored. The relationships among power at the sending-end circuit are also revealed. It is shown that fluctuations in the sending-end grid power due to changes in wind velocities are compensated with the proposed system. Finally, the effects of the sending-end grid conditions on the steady-state characteristics of the system are studied.

  • This paper proposes a novel probabilistic load flow model for power systems integrated with large-scale wind power, which considers the multi-time scale dispatching features. The ramp limitations of the units and the steady-state security constraints of the network have been comprehensively considered for the entire duration of the study period; thus, the coupling of the system operation states at different time sections has been taken into account. For each time section, the automatic generation control (AGC) strategy is considered, and all variations associated with the wind power and loads are compensated by all AGC units. Cumulants and the Gram-Charlier expansion are used to solve the proposed model. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using the modified IEEE RTS 24-bus system and the modified IEEE 118-bus system.
