In this study, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) environment was established using MATLAB/Simulink to simulate and verify the power performance of a wind turbine. The target wind turbine was selected as the NREL 5 MW model, and modeling was performed based on the disclosed specifications. The HILS environment consists of a PC equipped with a MATLAB/Simulink program, a programmable logic controller (PLC) for uploading and linking control algorithms, and data acquisition (DAQ) equipment to manage wind turbine data input and output. The operation of the HILS environment was carried out as a procedure of operation (PC) of the target wind turbine modeled based on MATLAB/Simulink, data acquisition (PLC) of control algorithms, control command calculation (PLC), and control command input (PC). The simulation was performed using the HILS environment under turbulent wind conditions and compared with the simulation results performed under the same conditions in the HILS environment using the commercial program Bladed for performance verification. From the comparison, it was found that the dynamic simulation results of the Bladed HILS and the MATLAB HILS were close in power performances and the errors in the average values of rotor rotation speed and power generation between the two simulations were about 0.44 % and 3.3 %, respectively.

Wind loads and environments in realistic situations surrounded by neighboring buildings may be considerably different from those in idealized or simplified situations such as codes and standards. Interference effects of change in wind passage of a building group on wind loads and wind environments are reviewed. Wind-induced interference effects depend mainly on the building geometry and arrangement of these structures, their orientation and upstream terrain conditions. The most important factor among them may be the arrangement of building structures which can change the wind direction directly. Interference effects regarding wind loads are discussed with examples of window damages by typhoon and of pressure measurements in the boundary layer wind tunnel. Wind environment problems are also discussed, specially underlined on pedestrian comfort and safety. Various evaluation techniques or standards of wind environment are introduced. The change of wind velocity between the panel-type apartment buildings is examined, depending on the distance each other.
One of the most important elements in creating the pleasant residential environment is the wind. For the pleasant residential environment, it is important that the air pollutants are not stagnant but appropriately and swiftly diffused and removed by winds. Especially, the river becomes a main route of wind in the urban core. So, it is necessary to secure the space to circulate the sufficient cool air to this area. But, recently many high-rise apartment complexes have been built along the rivers that have the fine view and pleasant environment. As a result, the cool and fresh air coming from mountains hardly diffuses into the urban core but just flows along the river. Considering the facts above, this study selected types of building layout and kind of land cover as complex or architectural design factors that have an influence on wind environment. Based on the factors, it analyzed change in wind environment according to apartment complex development aiming at the Sinchun area which is Daegu Metropolitan City's main wind corridor. Therefore, when apartment complex development is planned in the future, it can offer basic data for establishing plans for more pleasant complexes. As a result of the analysis, it was shown that the layout type of housing and the building height plan in consideration of wind corridor around the river were pretty effective in increasing the wind speed and circulating the air in the apartment complex. Therefore, if wind corridor is considered when apartment complex development is planed in the future, this study can offer useful information contributing to improve comfort in residential environment in the level of complex building as well as city planning.
A Scanning Rayleigh Doppler lidar for wind profiling based on a non-polarized beam splitter cube optically contacted FPI is developed for wind measurement from high troposphere to low stratosphere in 5-35 km. Non-polarized beam splitter cube optically contacted to the FPI are used for a stable optical receiver. Zero Doppler shift correction is used to correct for laser or FPI frequency jitter and drift and the timing sequence is designed. Stability of the receiver for Doppler shift discrimination is validated by measuring the transmissions of FPI in different days and analyzed the response functions. The maximal relative wind deviation due to the stability of the optical receiver is about 4.1% and the standard deviation of wind velocity is 1.6% due to the stability. Wind measurement comparison experiments were carried out in Jiuquan ($39.741^{\circ}N$, $98.495^{\circ}E$), Gansu province of China in 2015, showing good agreement with radiosonde result data. Continuous wind field observation was performed from October 16th to November 12th and semi-continuous wind field of 19 nights are presented.

With taller buildings and larger typhoons, the impact of building winds is growing. During the 11th Typhoon Hinnamno in 2022, the building wind in Busan L City exceeded 60m/s, reaching the highest speed ever. Although many studies have been conducted on reducing the wind load of buildings, which is one of the problem factors caused by strong wind speed, there is a lack of research on wind speed reducing sculptures that can directly control strong wind speed. In this paper, several types of wind speed reduction sculptures were proposed to solve these problems, and the wind speed reduction capability of the proposed sculptures was analyzed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). These results can contribute to suggesting effective design methods for improving the urban environment and reducing pedestrian stress.
Full-scale measurements have been made to determine the increase in wind speed over two exposed embankments, one of $23^{\circ}$ slope and 4.7 m in height, the other of $24^{\circ}$ slope and 7.3 m in height. Measurements were made at heights of 5, 10 and 15 m above the upper edge of each embankment and at the same heights approximately 100 m upwind in the lower-level approach fetch. Despite the modest sizes of the embankments, the maximum recorded increase in mean wind speed was 28% and the minimum was 13%; these increase relate to increases in wind loads on structures erected at the top of the embankments of 64% and 28% respectively. The associated increases in gust speeds are estimated at 33% and 18%, which imply increases in gust loading of 77% and 39% respectively. These experimental results are compared with predictions obtained from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, using three high Reynolds number eddy-viscosity models and estimates from the UK wind loading code, BS 6399: Part 2. The CFD results are generally in agreement with the experimental data, although near-ground effects on the embankment crest are poorly reproduced.
This study focuses on proposing measures for the reasonable development of offshore wind farms using the case of Norway, which was the first nation in the world to build a floating offshore wind farm of 80 MW or more. Norwegian authorities conducted a strategic environment assessment in 2012 to select offshore wind farm sites, discovered 15 potential sites, and finally decided on two designated sites in 2020. Based on various survey data such as seabirds, marine environment, and fishing activities, scientific-based spatial analysis was conducted to select additional offshore wind farm sites in line with future development plans. In addition, a government-led steering committee and advisory group have established marine spatial plans since 2002. Therefore, it will be possible to listen to and coordinate the opinions of stakeholders by using the steering committee and advisory group for offshore wind power development. By examining the case of Norway, we suggest the following policy points that can achieve carbon neutrality and develop sustainable offshore wind farms: 1. Establish a government-led steering committee and advisory group that can select potential sites for offshore wind farms by coordinating the opinions of stakeholders 2. Induce efficient and sequential offshore wind farm development by using various survey data and scientific-based spatial analysis.
In this study the AWS was installed in three areas to analyze creation and characteristics of local wind circulation through observation. According to the result, in night time when mountain wind is well developed showed temperature in A area located in Dalbigol valley and B area adjacent with the valley was lower than C area located in the lowland of the center of city by $1.5\sim4^{\circ}C$. The wind speed was also shown two times stronger than C area. In addition, in terms of wind direction, A and B areas showed east wind consistently according to topographic shapes of Dalbigol valley with high altitude and residential sites of lowland with low altitude. Although the C area didn't show big changes in wind direction due to the effects of city structures, east wind is often seen so mountain wind from Dalbigol valley is found to have an effect at least. Through the analysis of temperature, wind speed, and wind direction, nigh time showed relatively cold mountain wind blew following Dalbigol valley, throughout residential sites and to the center of city with lowland. During the daytime, the temperature in the city with lowland and residential sites is constantly higher than A area located in Dalbigol valley, and strong wind speed following Dalbigol valley, and three areas have $200\sim300^{\circ}$ of main wind direction, so west valley wind throughout the city with lowland and following Dalbigol is clearly formed.

The existence of a dam has potential effects on the surrounding wind environment especially when it is located in mountainous areas. In this situation, the long-span bridge over the reservoir can easily be exposed to non-uniform incoming flows, affecting its wind-resistance performance. This paper presents a study on the aerostatic stability of such a bridge. Wind tunnel tests were first carried out to investigate the wind environment above a mountainous reservoir. The results show that the angle of attack and the wind speed along the bridge axis show obvious non-uniform characteristics, which is related to the inflow direction. When winds come from the south where the river is winding, the angle of attack varies along the span direction significantly. The finite element model for the bridge was established using ANSYS software, and effects of non-uniform wind loads on the aerostatic stability were computed. Non-uniform angle of attack and wind speed are unfavorable to the aerostatic stability of the bridge, especially the former. When the combined action of non-uniform angle of attack and wind speed is considered, the critical wind speed of aerostatic instability is further reduced. Moreover, the aerostatic stability of the bridge is closely related to the dam height.
In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.
