  • The paper presents a model for analysing the shear-lag effect on the slab of twin-girder composite decks subjected to static actions, support settlements and concrete shrinkage, which are the main actions of interest in composite bridge design. The proposed model includes concrete creep behaviour and shear connection flexibility. The shear-lag in the slab is accounted for by means of a new warping function. The considered actions are then applied to a realistic bridge deck and their effects are discussed. The proposed method is utilised to determine the slab effective widths for three different width-length ratios of the deck. Finally, a comparison between the results obtained with the Eurocode EC4-2 and those obtained with the proposed model is performed.

  • The PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) converter for the AC to DC rectification has become attractive in the industrial variable-speed drive application and the electric utilities due to the following benefits: Nearly the sinusoidal input current with unity power factor; Controllable DC link voltage; Bidirectional power flow. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of single and three phase PWM converter's input and output characteristics as a function of the input filter inductance under balanced and unbalanced conditions. Also, its performance under the supply voltage including harmonics is investigated by simulation with Matlab Simlulink and experiments. These results provide a reference for selecting the reasonable converter's input filter inductance for given harmonics or power factor criterion.

  • In most previous research work, the transverse edge effect has been allowed for only by use of a relativity-increase factor. This paper gives a more exact treatment. A two-dimensional-field analysis is presented for the problem of sheet rotor linear induction motor with finite width the method used takes account of flux leakage in the space between the stator and secondary sheet rotor as well as in the secondary itself. Equations are derived for the flux density distribution in the air gap and for the starting face, in each case as a function of stator current. The cross gap flux density peaks towards athe edge of the stator. This phenomena is known as the transverse edge effect. Measurements of the flux density in the air gap and starting force on a linear induction motor with sheet rotor of different width showed a reasonable agreement, suggest that it would be desirable to take into account also, at least for this motor in which severe redistribution occurs.

  • n general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the signal distortion incorporating meander-shaped transmission line on PCB in broadband frequency range, up to 50GHz. This broadband characteristic provides reasonable analysis of digital pulse having very short rising time. Simulation results reveal suppression characteristic at multiband which is dependent on only the width of meander arm. This width of arm also can be adjusted using different permittivity because it provides different effective wave-length. It is found that the suppression characteristic shows sharpness with as a function of the number of arms. However, these characteristics shown limitation for microstrip line structure rather than for stripline structure, so we can avoid these unwanted phenomena using stripline structure.

  • Pressure control is possible driving a simple ON/OFF 3-way valve of hydraulic servo system by pulse width modulation signal. But the pressure varies according to the duty ratio and carrier frequency and repeated on-off action induces pressure fluctuation. So equations for mean pressure and ripple amplitude are theoretically derived as a function of on/off time, the system parameters which decide the pressure characteristics are arranged and they are verified by experimental study. As the result selection criteria for the major design parameters are established and the basic strategy to suppress the unnecessary fluctuation can be provided for a hydraulic pressure control system using these type of valves.

  • When structures undergo rotating motion, their modal characteristics often vary significantly. The variations of modal characteristics are determined from their geometric shapes and their rotating angular speed. Since the modal characteristics vary during the operation of the structures, they should be carefully scrutinized. In this paper, rotating cantilever beams are chosen as design targets which need to meet some specific design requirements. The thickness and the width of the rotating beams are assumed as multi-stage spline functions and the stage values for the thickness and the width are used as design variables for the optimization problems.

  • The linear accelerator of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory(PAL) will drive a top-up mode operation in PLS-II(Pohang Light Source-II). Due to this kind of the operation mode, the electron gun is expected to have shorter life time of the cathode. Further in the PLS-II, two gate valves will be installed in front of the electron gun. The distance between the pre-bunching section and the electron gun will increase by 400 mm compared to the existing system due to the insertion of these gate valves. As a result the incident electron beam. One of the goals to improve the beam pulse width is by incorporating suitable biased voltage. In this paper, we will present test results of beam pulse width as a function of different biased voltage and focusing solenoid coil.

  • Various types of coastal structures have been constructed to prevent coastal disasters. Among these coastal structures, submerged breakwaters have been used more widely than all of the other coastal structures because of their excellent advantages in scenery effects, construction efficiency, and environmental benefits. This study investigated the potential of the horizontal plate submerged breakwater model. Usually, it is necessary for a submerged breakwater to minimize and compensate for the negative impacts on the marine environment and ecosystem caused by the marine construction. Thus, the prevention of coastal disasters was verified for this submerged breakwater model, regardless of its function as a fish reef. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hydraulic characteristics with changes in the crest width and porosity of a horizontal plate submerged breakwater and compare the results of this study with the results of other studies on permeable and impermeable submerged breakwaters.
