  • It is well known residual gum exists in degummed or rotted hemp fibers. Gum removal results in improvement in fiber fineness and the properties of the resultant hemp yams. However, it is not known what correlation if any exists between the residual gum content in retted hemp fibers and the fiber fineness, described in terms of fiber width in this paper. This study examined the mean width and coefficient of variation (CV) of fiber width of seventeen chemically rotted hemp samples with reference to residual gum content. The mean and CV of fiber width were obtained from an Optical fiber diameter analyser (OFDA 100). The linear regression analysis results show that the mean fiber width is directly proportional to the residual gum content. A slightly weaker linear correlation also exists between the coefficient of variation of fiber width and the residual gum content. The strong linear co-relation between the mean of fiber width and the residual gum content is a significant outcome, since testing for fiber width using the OFDA is a much simpler and quicker process than testing the residual gum content. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) reinforces the OFDA findings. SEM micrographs show a flat ribbon like fiber cross-section hence the term \"fiber width\" is used instead of fiber diameter. Spectral differences in the untreated dry decorticated skin samples and chemically treated and subsequently carded samples indicate delignification. The peaks at $1370cm^{-1}$, $1325cm^{-1}$, $1733cm^{-1}$, and $1600cm^{-1}$ attributed to lignin in the untreated samples are missing from the spectra of the treated samples. The spectra of the treated samples are more amine-dominated with some of the OH character lost.cter lost.

  • The objective of this study is to identify main-effect QTLs, epistatic QTLs, and the interactions between QTL and the environment associated with grain appearances of brown rice. A genetic linkage map was created with 172 DNA markers spanning 12 rice chromosomes based on 120 DH lines, which derived from a cross between 'Samgang'(Tongil) and 'Nagdong'(Japonica). One thousandgrain weight, length, width, length-to-width ratio, and thickness were evaluated regarding the DH population. Twenty independent QTLs and fourteen epistatic QTLs were identified in using CIM by two programs, known as WinQTLcart2.5 and QTLMAPPER. The QTLs of qgw9.1 in an interval of RM434-RM242 on chromosome 9 and qgw11.1 at a peak marker of RM287 on chromosome 11 for one thousand-grain weight, qgwi2.2 for grain width at a peak marker of RM450, qlw2.1 for length-to-width ratio flanked by RM492 and RM324, and qgt2.1 for thickness flanked by 2009 and RM492 on chromosome 2 were detected over two years, which can be considered as stable QTLs. The epistatic effect might be an important component for genetic basis of one thousand-grain weight and width. The main-effect QTLs of grain width and length to width ratio were easily influenced by environments.

  • The larval head capsule width, larval weight and length of mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari Hope were measured when the larvae were exuviated in artificial diet rearing. The larval head capsule width from the 1st to the 12th instar was ranged from 0.12 to 0.69 cm, and growth ratio of each instar was significantly high between the 1st and the 2nd instars. The fitness to Dyar's law for the larval head capsule width was 87.6%. When the logarithum of the larval head capsule width is plotted against the number of instars, the calculated regression line was LogY=0.12086+0.06998X and Dyar's constant was 1.18. The larval weight was increased with larval developmental stages, and the coefficient of variation of larval weight was apparently high. But the calculated regression line was LogY=-0.91592+0.25959X and Dyar's constant was 1.25. The growth ration of the larval length was clearly high between the 2nd and the 3rd instars, and that of larvae from the 4th instar was decreased. The calculated regression line was LogY=-0.16932+0.09841X and Dyar's constant was 1.25. In conclusion, our results suggested that the larvae growth of mulberry longicorn beetle appeared to be highly related in the larval head capsule width, larval weight and length.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of the weight-bearing pattern and calcaneal taping on the heel width and plantar pressure in standing. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects with normal feet participated in this study. The heel width was measured using a digital caliper, and a pedoscan was used to measure the plantar pressure of the rear foot while standing. The participants were instructed to stand in three weight-bearing patterns (anterior, middle, and posterior weight bearing) before and after calcaneal taping. The heel width and plantar pressure were measured three times before and three times after calcaneal taping, with the three weight-bearing patterns applied in random order. A 2 (non-taping vs. taping) × 3 (anterior, middle, posterior weight bearing) two-way repeated ANOVA with a Bonferroni post hoc correction was used to assess the differences in heel width and plantar pressure. Results: The results revealed a significant main effect of the weight-bearing pattern (p<.01), but not of calcaneal taping (p>.05). Greater weight bearing applied to the heel resulted in a significantly increased heel width and planter pressure of the rear foot (p<.01). Conclusion: In standing, a posterior weight-bearing pattern increases the heel width due to side-to-side shifting of the plantar heel pad, which increases the heel plantar pressure. Therefore, to prevent high stress on the heel pad and plantar heel pain, it is important to refrain from posterior weight bearing while standing during the activities of daily living.

  • The aim of the current study was to develop an advanced prediction model for the slab width spread during hot rough rolling. Rough rolling consists of both vertical rolling using a set of profiled edger rolls and horizontal rolling using a set of plain work rolls. FE-simulations were performed to investigate the influences of process variables such as initial slab width, initial thickness, sizing draft, edger roll draft and work roll draft on the final slab width variation. From a statistical analysis of the simulation results, an advanced model, which can predict the slab width spread during the edger rolling and horizontal rolling, was developed. The experimental hot rolling trials showed that the newly developed model provided fairly accurate predictions on the slab width spread during hot rough rolling process using a profiled edger rolls.

  • The suitable estimation of the filter width in the dynamic eddy viscosity model were investigated in high Reynolds number channel flow. In this study, the improvement on matters by optimizing the test filter shape was attempted through the numerical experiment. The way that select optimum test filter width is recommended. Some test filters, one is based on a discrete representation of the top-hat filter and another are based on a high-order filtering operation, are evaluated in simulations of the turbulent channel flow at Reynolds number 1020, based on friction velocity and channel half width. It appears that the estimation of test filter width practically can decrease the dissipative nature of dynamic eddy viscosity model with explicit test filter. It shows that the value of the filter width ratio used in the dynamic procedure must match the properties of the test filter actually used in the calculation.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences of visual image by variations in the location of the waistline and width of the belt of the basic skirt. The stimuli are 21 samples: 7 variations of the location of the waistline and 3 variations of the width of the belt. The data has been obtained from 43 fashion design majors. The data has analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, anova, scheffe's test and the MCA method. The results of this study are as follows. The visual image by variations of the location of the waistline and width of the belt is composed of 3 factors: attention, function, attraction. The visual image by variations of the width of the belt has partial significant differences. The visual image by variations in the location of the waistline has significant differences in all factors. Function shows the interaction between the location of the waistline and width of the belt. However, attention and attraction don't show the interaction between the location of the waistline and width of the belt ; the location of the waistline tends to be the main effect.

  • The relationship between width of line target and distance at the limit of discrimination was examined by means of the behavioral method, for filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer from 11 to 15cm body length. Target distance was distance from beginning of partition board to target plate, and was varied from 50cm to 200cm. The target plate was made of white acrylic resin with a vertical black line in the center. The width of line target was varied from 0.2mm to 8.0mm. Fish were trained to respond to a line target and the width of line target reduced until the minimum width required to elicit a response was established. Rate of success was expressed as the percentage of target choices in 90 trials. The line acuity of filefish was found to be 0.58 at a target distance of 50cm. The rate of success decreased slowly as line target width decreased from 8.0mm to 1.5mm, and decreased suddenly for target widths less than about 1.5mm. The width of the line target D(mm) at the limit of discrimination was shown to be an exponential function of the target distance L(cm) as follows : D=exp(9.947$\times$$10^-3$.L+0.146)

  • We have studied experimentally the propagation characteristics of fundamental dark spatial solitons on finite-width backgrounds and conpared with the result of numerical simulations. It was verified experimentally that the width of dark solitons decreased but that of background increased as the beam intensity increased. The refractive index change obtained from soliton constant, which is for infinite-width background, was smaller than that from Z-scan method. Numerical simulations of fundamental dark solitons on a finite-width backgrounds showed that the peak intensity of background, the width of dark soliton and the soliton constant varied with the propagation length. If the change of soliton constant on finite-width backgrounds was considered, the refractive index change was in good agreement with that from Z-scan method. ethod.
