  • In this paper, a X-Band T/R-module for SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems based on active phased array antennas is designed and fabricated. The T/R modules have a and width of more than 800 MHz centered at X-Band and support dual, switched polarizations. The output power of the module is 7 watts over a wide bandwidth. The noise figure is as low as 3.9 dB. Phase and amplitude are controlled by a 6-bit phase shifter and a 6-bit digital attenuator, respectively. Further the fabricated T/R module has est and calibration port with directional coupler and power divider. Highly integrated T/R module is achieved by using LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) multiple layer substrate. RMS gain error is less than 0.8 dB max. in Rx mode, and RMS phase error is less than $4^{\circ}$ max. in Rx/Tx phase under all operating frequency band, or the T/R module meet the required electrical performance m test. This structure an be applied to active phase array SAR Antennas.

  • Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were used as dielectric lossy materials and NiFe particles were used as magnetic lossy materials. Total twelve specimens for the three types such as dielectric, magnetic and mixed radar absorbing materials (RAMs) were fabricated. Their complex permittivities and permeabilities in the range of $2{\sim}18$ GHz were measured using the transmission line technique. The parametric studios for reflection loss characteristics of each specimen to design the single-layered RAMs were performed. The mixed RAMs generally showed the improved absorbing characteristics with thinner matching thickness. One of the mixed RAMs, MD3with the thickness of 2.00 mm had the 10 dB absorbing bandwidth of 4.0 GHz in the X-band ($8.2{\sim}12.4$ GHz). It also showed very broad 10 dB absorbing bandwidth as wide as 6.0 GHz in the Ku-band ($12.0{\sim}18.0$ GHz) with the thickness tuning to 1.49 mm. The experimental results for selected several specimens were in very good agreements with simulation ones in terms of the overall reflection loss characteristics and 10 dB absorbing bandwidth.

  • In this study, hexagonal ferrite powder with chemical formula SrZn2-xCoxFe16O27 was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method and its electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption characteristics were evaluated in the frequency range of 0.1-18 GHz with absorber thickness range of 0 - 10 mm. Reflection loss (RL) affecting electromagnetic wave absorption performance was calculated based on the transmission line theory using measured complex permeabilities and permittivities. RL spectra were also directly measured for some samples. They were well matched with calculated results. High-frequency complex permeability characteristics were changed gradually according to the amount of Co substitution (x). The EM wave absorption frequency band could be tuned accordingly. Hexaferrite samples with x = 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5 exhibited remarkable maximum electromagnetic wave absorption performances with minimum RL (RLmin) lowered than -50 dB. They also showed a very broad frequency band (Δf > 10 GHz) in which more than 90% of the EM wave energy absorption occurred (RL ≤ -10 dB).

  • This paper proposes an approach to the classification of respiratory states of humans based on visual information. An ultra-wide-band radar sensor acquired respiration signals, and the respiratory states were classified based on two-dimensional (2D) images instead of one-dimensional (1D) vectors. The 1D vector-based classification of respiratory states has limitations in cases of various types of normal respiration. The deep neural network model was employed for the classification, and the model learned the 2D images of respiration signals. Conventional classification methods use the value of the quantified respiration values or a variation of them based on regression or deep learning techniques. This paper used 2D images of the respiration signals, and the accuracy of the classification showed a 10% improvement compared to the method based on a 1D vector representation of the respiration signals. In the classification experiment, the respiration states were categorized into three classes, normal-1, normal-2, and abnormal respiration.

  • Broadband antennas have late-time ringing by multi-reflections between feed points and 0pen ends of the antennas, which indicates the narrowband nature of the antenna. The resistive loading has been used to reduce the late time ringing that is important for ground penetrating radar and resonance detection systems in order to prevent masking of target. In this paper, we design an ultra wide band antenna with resistive loading technique to reduce the internal reflections within the antenna.. The designed antenna is implemented and tested to show inIproved characteristics.

  • Various studies such as INS(: Inertial Navigation System) are conducting to estimate the position of UAV, because the GPS information of UAV is at risk like the GPS jamming. The position estimation using DoA and RTT are used to apply many radar systems, and that process can be applied in datalink of UAV. The general monopulse feed in UAV datalink is Multi-horn, because of the wide BW(: Band Width) and frequency range. And it needs wide SNR range of tracking because of the limited transmit power of airborne unit. The estimation error of position increase at low SNR, and the DoA is valid in only 3dB beam width but high SNR causes false of mainlobe detection because of large sidelobe. In this paper, We propose the method to achieve higher accuracy of DoA estimation on low SNR and review some idea that able to detect mainlobe.

  • Continuous monitoring and immediate response is essential to protect the national maritime territory and maritime resources from the activities of illegal ships. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images with a wide range of images are effective for maritime surveillance asthe weather and day-night conditions rarely affect to image acquisition. However, an effective ship detection is not easy due to the huge data size of SAR images and various characteristics such as the speckle noise. In this study, the Human Visual Attention System (HVAS) algorithm was applied to KOMPSAT-5 to extract the initial targets, and the SAR-Split algorithm depending on the imaging modes was used to remove false alarms. The detected targets were finally selected by the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm and matched with the ship's Automatic Identification System (AIS) information. Overall, the detected targets were well matched with AIS data, but some false alarms by ship wakes were observed. The detection rate was about 80% in ES mode and about 64% in ST mode. It is expected that the developed ship detection algorithm will contribute to the construction of a wide area maritime surveillance network.

  • It is well known that satellite synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used for the observation of surface displacement owing to earthquakes, volcanoes, and subsidence very precisely. In wetlands where vegetation exists on the surface of the water, it is possible to create a water level change map with high spatial resolution over a wide area using the InSAR technique. Currently, a number of imaging radar satellites are in operation, and most of them support a ScanSAR mode observation to gather information over a large area at once. The Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) wetland, located in northern Colombia, is a vast wetland developed along the Caribbean coast. The CGSM wetlands face serious environmental threats from human activities such as reclamation for agricultural uses and residential purposes as well as natural causes such as sea level rise owing to climate change. Various restoration and protection plans have been conducted to conserve these invaluable environments in recognition of the ecological importance of the CGSM wetlands. Monitoring of water level changes in wetland is very important resources to understand the hydrologic characteristics and the in-situ water level gauge stations are usually utilized to measure the water level. Although it can provide very good temporal resolution of water level information, it is limited to fully understand flow pattern owing to its very coarse spatial resolution. In this study, we evaluate the L-band ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 ScanSAR mode to observe the water level change over the wide wetland area using the radar interferometric technique. In order to assess the quality of the interferometric product in the aspect of spatial resolution and coherence, we also utilized ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 stripmap high-resolution mode observations.

  • This paper analyzes the occurrence and cause of bond wires fusing used in the manufacture of pulsed high power amplifiers. Recently GaN HEMT has been spotlight in the fields of electronic warfare, radar, base station and satellite communication. In order to produce the maximum output power, which is the main performance of the high-power amplifier, optimal impedance matching is required. And the material, diameter and number of bond wires must be determined in consideration of not only the rated current but also the heat generated by the transient current. In particular, it was confirmed that compound semiconductor with a wide energy band gap such as GaN trigger fusing of the bond wire due to an increase in thermal resistance when the design efficiency is low or the heat dissipation is insufficient. This data has been simulated for exothermic conditions, and it is expected to be used as a reference for applications using GaN devices as verified through IR microscope.

  • Damages by heavy snow does not occur very often, but when it does, it causes damage to a wide area. To mitigate snow damage, it is necessary to know, in advance, the depth of snow that causes damage in each region. However, snow depths are measured at observatory locations, and it is difficult to understand the spatial distribution of snow depth that causes damage in a region. To understand the spatial distribution of snow depth, the point measurements are interpolated. However, estimating spatial distribution of snow depth is not easy when the number of measured snow depth is small and topographical characteristics such as altitude are not similar. To overcome this limit, satellite images such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can be analyzed using Differential Interferometric SAR (DInSAR) method. DInSAR uses two different SAR images measured at two different times, and is generally used to track minor changes in topography. In this study, the spatial distribution of snow depth was estimated by DInSAR analysis using dual polarimetric IW mode C-band SAR data of Sentinel-1B satellite operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). In addition, snow depth was estimated using geostationary satellite Chollian-2 (GK-2A) to compare with the snow depth from DInSAR method. As a result, the accuracy of snow cover estimation in terms with grids was about 0.92% for DInSAR and about 0.71% for GK-2A, indicating high applicability of DInSAR method. Although there were cases of overestimation of the snow depth, sufficient information was provided for estimating the spatial distribution of the snow depth. And this will be helpful in understanding regional damage-causing snow depth.
