  • This paper presents a K-band radar system installed on the ground moving vehicle to detect and track a high-speed target. The presented radar is separated into three search regions to satisfy a wide area detection and a limitation of the installing space of the radar, and each region performs detecting the target independently and tracking the detected target automatically. The presented radar radiating K-band FMCW waveform acquires range and velocity information of the target at the every dwell and receiving antenna of the radar is applied the multiple baseline interferometer to extract the precise angle information of the target. 3-dimensional tracking accuracy of the radar is 0.25 m RMSE measured actually through a fire experiment of an imitation target.

  • In this paper, the method of design of the waveguide band-pass filter and limiter in radar system is proposed. First, we design a self-resonant iris, which can behave as a band-pass filter by mounting the PIN diode on the iris. When low power microwave is incident on the proposed element, the element behaves as a band-pass filter. Under a high power microwave condition, however, the element behaves as a limiter having wide band stop characteristics. The fabricated element has a pass band with -0.7 dB insertion loss at 10 GHz under the low power condition and isolation about 25 dB under the high power condition.

  • This paper describes a block processing approach to detect targets in front of mono-static terrain imaging radar (TIR). It is difficult to employ several conventional imaging methods of the synthetic aperture radar(SAR) because the TIR is an ultra-wide-band(UWB) type of radar and employs a dechirp-on-receive process. To design an available imaging method, a block processing approach which conducts a range compression and an azimuth compression is proposed in this paper. The complete derivation of the proposed approach is presented. The results of simulations and field tests are demonstrated to show the performance and validity of the proposed approach.

  • This paper presents a finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) simulation and a data processing technique for radar sensing of the internal structure of a wall using an ultra-wide band antenna. We first designed an ultra-wide band anti-podal vivaldi antenna with a frequency range of 0.3~7 GHz which is chosen to be relatively low after considering the characteristics of wave attenuation, wall penetration, and range resolution. In this study the two-dimensional FDTD technique was used to simulate a wall-penetration-radar experiment under practical conditions. The next, the measured radiation pattern of the practical antenna is considered as an equivalent source in the FDTD simulation, and the reflection data of a concrete wall and targets are obtained by using the simulation. Then, a data processing technique has been applied to the FDTD reflection data to get a radar image for remote sensing of the internal structure of the wall. We compared the two different source excitations in the FDTD simulation; (1) commonly-used isotropic point sources and (2) polynomial curve fitting sources of the measured radiation pattern. As a result, when we apply the measured antenna pattern into the FDTD simulation, we could obtain about 2.5 dB higher signal to noise level than using a plane wave incidence with isotropic sources.

  • This paper presents a procedure to optimize the design of 70GHz band array antenna for automotive short range radar sensor applications using Chebyshev polynomials. SRR(: Short Range Radar) systems require a wide angle width and low Side lobe level to detect targets within close proximity while ensuring a high Field of View(FoV). The optimized antenna operates in the 76 to 81GHz frequency range, and to reduce the antenna size, we arranged 12 patches in series, achieving an SLL of 10dB, angle with of 112.5o, gain of 15.4dB and an input return loss of less than -10dB at 78GHz. In this paper, we proceed with antenna design for SRR using Chebyshev polynomials, and present an optimal design for antenna structures to be used in MRR(: Medium-Range Radar) and LRR(: Long Range Radar) applications based on this paper

  • In this paper, we design and fabricate a VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) for radar detector of X/K/Ka band using frequency multiplier. The existing VCO operated in radar detector have many Problems such as narrow bandwidth, slow frequency variable rate, unstable of production due to high frequency. So we design and fabricate a VCO improved such problems using frequency multiplier. As a result of measure, investigated frequency multiple VCO show its output power 3.64 dBm at multiplied operating frequency 11.27 GHz and have wide frequency tuning range of 660 MHz by controlled voltage 0V to 4.50 V applied diode. And also its phase noise is -104.0 dEc at 1 MHz offset frequency so we obtain suitable performance for commercial use.

  • GaN (Gallium-Nitride) is a promising candidate material in various radio frequency applications due to its inherent properties including wide bandgap, high carrier concentration, and high electron mobility/saturation velocity. Notably, AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistor exhibits high operating voltage and high power-density/power at high frequency. In next-generation radar systems, GaN power transistors and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are significant components of transmitting and receiving modules. In this paper, we introduce technological trends for C-/X-/Ku-band GaN MMICs including power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers and switch MMICs, focusing on the status of GaN MMIC fabrication technology and GaN foundry service. Additionally, we review the research for the localization of C-/X-/Ku-band GaN MMICs using in-house GaN transistor and MMIC fabrication technology. We also discuss the results of C-/X-/Ku-band GaN MMICs developed at Defense Materials and Components Convergence Research Department in ETRI.

  • In this thesis, design of a VCO(Voltage controlled Oscillator) with a novel tuning mechanism is presented for the Radar system. This circuit, the 9.5 GHz oscillator is designed and implemented by restructuring microstrip resonator to raise Q value and to require a wide frequency tuning range. This product is fabricated on 2.6 Teflon substrate and device is NE722S01. In this paper, The new microstrip resonator VCO is proposed to achieve the characteristic of a wide frequency tuning range. This microstrip resonator VCO shows the phase noise characteristic of -108.3 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from the fundamental frequency, the output power of 5.7 dBm and the second harmonic suppression of -38 dBc for the VCO are obtained. The manufacture VCO shows a frequency tuning range of 193.8 MHz. The proposed micro trip resonator VCO can be used for X-band Radar System with required tuning range.

  • A tile type active T/R(Transmit/Receive) module for X-band active array radar is demonstrated in this paper. Proposed tile type structure based on fuzz button solderless vertical interconnection shows wide band characteristic of about 30 % bandwidth in X-band with insertion loss of below 0.6 dB and input and output VSWR of less than 1.7. Moreover, the mismatching generally appeared in the vertical interconnection which shown wide band characteristic can also be minimized and, therefore, good gain flatness can be achieved.
