  • The integrated circuit interconnection lines are experimented with patterned ground shields (PGS) at microwave frequencies. Measurement results demonstrate that the PGS can significantly reduce the power loss through the interconnect lines over wide frequency ranges as the PGS shields the lossy silicon substrate. The transmission line characteristics of the PGS interconnect lines are analyzed and identified that the PGS reduces the wave length of the interconnect line.

  • Single-effect $CH_3OH-LiI-ZnBr_2$ and $C_2H_5OH-LiI$ absorption heat pumps are simulated to evaluate feasibility as heating device. These systems are predicted to give higher heating COPs in wide operating ranges compared to conventional systems. Among the two systems, the $C_2H_5OH-LiI$ system is found to be more advantageous for operating in extremely cold weather due to the large solubility of Lil in $C_2H_5OH$.

  • An influence of inlet pressure on the performance of sector-shaped pad thrust bearings is investigated theoretically. The optimum conditions of film thickness or the optimum positions of pivot are found through the evaluation of load capacity for all available conditions of film thickness, under the operating conditions which the thermal and pad deformation effects can be neglected. The bearing performance including the inlet pressure effects is obtained for a wide operating ranges that inertia parameter(Re$^{*}$) is up to unity, and for the various cases of pad extent angle (number of pad) and the three cases of the angle between pads. The results show that the inlet pressure has a large influence on the performance of sector-shaped pad thrust bearings. In the design of sector-shaped pad bearings, due to the inlet pressure, the optimum number of pad is varied with the operating speed and the angle between pads, and the optimum position of pivot is located toward the leading edge along with the operating speed increases.

  • This paper presents the results of a study on the effects of pounding at expansion joints of concrete bridges under earthquake ground motions. An engineering approach, rather than continuum mechanics, is emphasized. First, the sensitivity analysis of the gap element stiffness is performed. Second, usefulness of the analysis method for simulation of pounding phenomena is demonstrated. Third, the effects of pounding on the ductility demands measured in terms of the rotation of column ends are investigated. Two-dimensional FE analysis using a bilinear hysterestic model for bridge substructure joints and a nonlinear gap element for the expansion joint is performed on a realistic bridge with an expansion joint. Effects of the primary factors on the ductility demand such as gap sizes and characteristics of earthquake ground motion are investigated through a parametric study. The major conclusions are that pounding effect is generally negligible on the ductility demand for wide practical ranges of gap size and peak ground acceleration, but is potentially significant at the locations of impact.

  • It is possible to suppress voltage drops, power loading fluctuations and regeneration power lapses for DC railway systems by applying an energy storage system. A electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) of the rapid charge/discharge type has been developed and used in wide ranges. It has a long life, high efficiency and maintenance free/low pollution features as a new energy storage element. In this paper, an efficient charge and discharge control method of a bidirectional DC-DC converter using the supercapacitor is proposed.

  • A quasi-resonant flyback converter using a simple 8-bit microcontroller for a LED lighting is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter is easily and precisely controlled by the simple controller using a low-cost 8-bit microcontroller. Also, in order to operate the 8-bit microcontroller, the proposed converter system does not require any additional power supply for the controller. A prototype power supply is developed to supply a 270[W] LED lighting with the wide input voltage ranges ($175[V_{ac}]-265[V_{ac}]$). Experimental results will be show the practicality and validity of the proposed circuit.

  • The numerical solutions are examined on the effect of a centered heat conducting body on natural convection in a 2-D square cavity. The influences of the Rayleigh number, the dimensionless conducting body size, and the ratio of the thermal diffusivity of the body to that of the fluid have been investigated on the natural convection heat transfer in overall concerned region. The analysis reveals that the fluid flow and heat transfer processes are governed by all of them. Results for isotherms, vector plots and wall Nusselt numbers are reported for Pr = 0.71 and relatively wide ranges of the other parameters. Heat transfer across the cavity, in comparison to that in the absence of a body, are enhanced (reduced) in general by a body with a thermal diffusivity ratio less (greater) than unity. The heat transfer are also found to attain a minimum as the body size is increased.

  • A numerical analysis has been carried out on forced convection heat transfer in the developing region of a porous channel. The channel is filled with an isotropic porous medium. At the channel walls, a uniform heat flux is given. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy equation and the LTNE model which does not employ the assumption of local thermal equilibrium between solid and fluid phases. Details of thermal fields in the developing region are examined over wide ranges of the thermal parameters. The numerical solutions at the fully developed region are compared with the previous analytical solutions. The correlation for predicting local Nusselt number in a porous channel is proposed.

  • This paper presents a novel prototype of active voltage clamped quasi-resonant ZVS-PWM forward DC-DC converter designed for specific low voltage high current application. We establish the soft-switching forward converter with a high frequency isolated link which can efficient operate over wide load ranges under conditions of zero voltage soft-switching and active voltage clamped switching. In addition, we evaluate connection of the soft-switching forward converter with large capacitor which capacitance is over 100[F].

  • A novel zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) isolated PWM boost converter for single stage power factor correction (PFC) is presented to improve the performance of the previously presented ZVT converter[8]. A simple auxiliary circuit which includes only one active switch provides zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition to all semiconductor devices. (Two active switches are required for the previous ZVT converter) This leads to reduced cost and simplified control circuit comparing to the previous ZVT converter. The ZVS is achieved for wide line and load ranges with minimum device voltage and current stresses. Operation principle, control strategy and features of the proposed converter are presented and verified by the experimental results from a 1.5 kW, 100 KHz laboratory prototype.
