Blue-emitting polymers containing carbazole units In main chains were synthesized by palladium catalyzed polycondensation of aniline with dibromo-substituted monomers such as 3,6-dibromocarbazole, N-(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-dibromocarbazole, and bis[6-bromo-N-(2-ethylhexyl)-carbazole-3-yl], respectively. All synthesized polymers exhibited relatively good solubility in common organic solvents, considerable molecular weights and high resistance to thermal degradation. From UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these solution-processable polymers, $\lambda_{max,UV}$ were in the range of 290 ~ 340 nm and $\lambda_{max,PL}$ were in the blue emission range of 440 ~ 478 nm, The polymers had HOMO energy (-5.19 ~ -5.64 eV) and wide band gap energy (2,91 - 3.42 eV).
ZnO semiconductor has a wide band gap of 3.37 eV and a large exciton binding energy of 60 meV, and displays excellent sensing and optical properties. In particular, ZnO based 1D nanowires and nanorods have received intensive attention because of their potential applications in various fields. We grew ZnO buffer layers prior to the growth of ZnO nanorods for the fabrication of the vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods without any catalysts. The ZnO nanorods were grown on Si (111) substrates by vertical MOCVD. The ZnO buffer layers were grown with various thicknesses at $400^{\circ}C$ and their effect on the formation of ZnO nanorods at $300^{\circ}C$ was evaluated by FESEM, XRD, and PL. The synthesized ZnO nanorods on the ZnO film show a high quality, a large-scale uniformity, and a vertical alignment along the [0001]ZnO compared to those on the Si substrates showing the randomly inclined ZnO nanorods. For sample using ZnO buffer layer, 1D ZnO nanorods with diameters of 150-200 nm were successively fabricated at very low growth temperature, while for sample without ZnO buffer the ZnO films with rough surface were grown.
ZnO is an n-type semiconductor with a wide band gap near 3.37 eV. It was known that ZnO films with a resistivity of the order of $10^{-4}\;{\Omega}cm$ is not easy to obtain. 1, 3, and 5wt% Si element were added into ZnO in ordre to improve the electrical and optical characteristics. The Si-doped ZnO (SZO) was grown on a glass substrate by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering at the temperature range from 100 to $500^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of SZO film showed preferable crystal orientation of (002) plane. It was confirmed that the lowest resistivity of the SZO films was $2.44{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$ and SZO films were significantly influenced by the working temperature. The average transmittance of the films was over 80% in the visible ranges.
ZnO is a widely investigated material for the blue and ultraviolet solid-state emitters and detectors. It has been promoted due to a wide-band gap semiconductor which has large exciton binding energy of 60 meV, chemical stability and low radiation damage. However, there are many problems to be solved for the growth of p-type ZnO for practical device applications. Many researchers have made an efforts to achieve p-type conductivity using group-V element of N, P, As, and Sb. In this letter, we have studied the optical characteristics of the antimony-doped ZnO (ZnO:Sb) thin films by means of photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, temperature-dependent PL, and time-resolved PL techniques. We observed donor-to-acceptor-pair transition at about 3.24 eV with its phonon replicas with a periodic spacing of about 72 meV in the PL spectra of antimony-doped ZnO (ZnO:Sb) thin films at 12 K. We also investigate thermal activation energy and carrier recombination lifetime for the samples. Our result reflects that the antimony doping can generate shallow acceptor states, leading to a good p-type conductivity in ZnO.
This paper briefly introduces silicon based thin film solar cells: amorphous (a-Si:H), microcrystalline ${\mu}c-Si:H$ single junction and $a-Si:H/{\mu}c-Si:H$ tandem solar cells. The major difference of a-Si:H and ${\mu}c-Si:H$ cells comes from electro-optical properties of intrinsic Si-films (active layer) that absorb incident photon and generate electron-hole pairs. The a-Si:H film has energy band-gap (Eg) of 1.7-1.8eV and solar cells incorporating this wide Eg a-Si:H material as active layer commonly give high voltage and low current, when illuminated, compared to ${\mu}c-Si:H$ solar cells that employ low Eg (1.1eV) material. This Eg difference of two materials make possible tandem configuration in order to effectively use incident photon energy. The $a-Si:H/{\mu}c-Si:H$ tandem solar cells, therefore, have a great potential for low cost photovoltaic device by its various advantages such as low material cost by thin-film structure on low cost substrate instead of expensive c-Si wafer and high conversion efficiency by tandem structure. In this paper, the structure, process and operation properties of Si-based thin-film solar cells are discussed.
We have performed a quantum-chemical investigation on the conformations and electronic properties of a variety of methoxy-substituted poly(p-phenylenevinylenes) (PPVs) to elucidate the effects of alkoxy substitution. Geometrical parameters for the polymers were fully optimized through Austin Model I (AM I) semi-empirical Hartree-Fock (HF) band calculations. Electronic properties of the polymers were obtained by applying the AM I optimized structures to the modified extended Huckel method. To confirm validity of the AM I conformational results, we also carried out ab initio HF calculations with the 6-31G (d) basis set for a variety of methoxy-substituted divinylbenzenes. It is found that the potential energy surfaces of alkoxy-substituted PPVs are quite shallow around the planar conformations, suggesting that the prepared films possess a variety of conformations with different torsion angle in the solid state, depending on the synthetic conditions. When two alkoxy groups are concurrently substituted at the adjacent sites in the phenylene ring, these groups are subject to rotating around the C(sp2)-O bonds by 70-80° to avoid the strong steric repulsion between them. Consequently, the overlap between the π-type p orbital of oxygen and the π molecular orbitals of the polymer decreases. This leads to a wide gap and a high oxidation potential for tetramethoxy-substituted PPV, compared to those of dialkoxy-substituted PPV.
Gallium-based liquid metal, e.g., eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn), is highly attractive as an electrode material for flexible and stretchable devices. On the liquid metal, oxide layer is spontaneously formed, which has a wide band-gap, and therefore is electrically insulating. In this paper, we fabricate a capacitor based on eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metal and investigate its cyclic voltammetry (CV) behavior. The EGaIn capacitor is composed of two EGaIn electrodes and electrolyte. CV curves reveal that the EGaIn capacitor shows the behavior of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC), where the oxide layers on the EGaIn electrodes serves as the dielectric layer of EDLC. The oxide thicker than the spontaneously-formed native oxide decreases the capacitance of the EGaIn capacitor, due to increased voltage loss across the oxide layer. The EGaIn capacitor without oxide layer exhibits unstable CV curves during the repeated cycles, where self-repair characteristic of the oxide was observed. Finally, the electrolyte concentration is optimized by comparing the CV curves at various electrolyte concentrations.
Nickel oxide is a nonstoichiometric transparent conductive oxide with p-type conductivity, a wide-band energy gap of 3.4~4.0 eV, and excellent chemical stability, making it a very important candidate as a material for bipolar devices. P-type conductivity in Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCO) is controlled by the oxygen vacancy concentration. During the TCO film deposition process, additional oxygen diffusing into the NiO structure causes the formation of Ni 3p ions and Ni vacancies. This eventually affects the hole concentration of the p-type oxide thin film. In this work, the surface morphology and the electrical characteristics were confirmed in accordance with the annealing atmosphere of the nickel oxide thin film.
We demonstrate epitaxial growth of ZnO thin films on 4H-SiC(0001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). ZnO and SiC have attracted attention for their special material properties as wide band gap semiconductors. Especially, ZnO could be applied to optoelectronic applications such as light emitting devices and photo detectors due to its direct wide bandgap (Eg) of ~3.37eV and large exciton binding energy of ~60meV. SiC shows a good lattice matching to ZnO compared with other commonly used substrates and in this regard SiC is a good candidate as a substrate for ZnO. In this work, ZnO thin films were grown on 4H-SiC(0001) substrates by PLD using an Nd:YAG laser with a 355nm wavelength. The crystalline properties of the films were evaluated by x-ray diffraction (XRD) $\theta-2\theta$, rocking curve and pole figure measurements using a high-resolution diffractometer. The surface morphology of the films was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM).
