Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality, contrast characteristics, and possible clinical utility of Medium Tau Inversion Recovery(MTIR) sequence with white matter suppression in patients with brain cortical lesion. Materials and methods : Two normal volunteers and twenty-one patients with cortical lesion were scanned with MTIR as well as other MR imaging sequences. Gray-white matter contrast was evaluated objectively using region-of-interest calculations, including percent contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR). MTIR sequence was visually compared with other sequences in 21 patients with cortical lesion including conspicuity and detection rate. Results : MTIR sequence had the highest present contrast and CNR between the gray matter and white matter. In twenty-one cases of cortical lesion including cortical dysplasia, MTIR sequence improved delineation and conspicuity of lesion, but MTIR sequence could not detect new lesions. Conclusion : The MTIR sequence well delineated the cortical lesions, particularly in including cortical dysplasia. It may be used as an adjunctive imaging sequence in case of poor gray and white matter differentiation with conventional T1-weighted sequences.
Objects : To investigate the relationship between the age of onset with the atrophy and the white matter hyperintensities observed in the brain MRI of Alzheimer patients. Methods : The authors measured volumetrically cortical and ventricular brain atrophy and rated semiquantitatively white matter signal hyperintensities in nine presenile and 18 senile Alzheimer patients, who were matched for dementia severity, according to NINCDS-ADRDA criteria and in age-matched 10 presenile and 11 senile control subjects. Results : Presenile Alzheimer patients showed significantly greater cortical and ventricular atrophy indices(p<0.05) but no difference in white matter hyperintensity scores compared to the age-matched control group. On the contrary, senile Alzheimer patients showed significantly greater white matter hyperintensity scores(p<0.05) but no difference in cortical and ventricular atrophy indices compared to the age-matched control group. Conclusion : An earlier onset was related to marked brain atrophy with less white matter lesions and a later onset is related to marked white matter lesions with less brain atrophy in Alzheimer's disease. Our results suggested the passible difference in the pathophysiology between the presenile and the senile-onset Alzheimer's disease.
Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has revealed the disruption of brain white matter microstructure in normal aging and alcoholism undetectable with conventional structural MR imaging. we plan to analyze the FA measurements of the ROI of dangerous drinkers selected from Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and Tract-Based Spatial Statics (TBSS) tool was used to extract FA values in the ROI from the image acquired through the pre-processing process. TBSS has a higher sensitivity of the FA value and MD value in the white matter than the brain gray matter, and has the advantage of quantitatively deriving the unlimited degree of brain nerve fibers, and more specialized in the brain white matter. We plan to analyze the fractional anisotropy (FA) measurement value for damage by selecting the center of the anatomical structure of the white matter region of the brain with high anisotropy among the brain neural networks that are particularly vulnerable to alcohol as the region of interest (ROI). In this study, we expected that alcohol causes damage to the brain white matter microstructure from FA value in various areas including both Choroid plexus. Especially, In the case of the moderate drunker, the mean value of FA in Lt, Rt. Choroid plexus was 0.2831 and 0.2872, whereas, in the case of the severe drunker, the mean value of FA was 0.1972 and 0.1936. We found that the higher the score on the AUDIT scale, the lower the FA value in ROI region of the brain white matter. Using the AUDIT scale, the guideline for the FA value of DTI can be presented, and it is possible to select a significant number of potentially severe drinkers. In other words, AUDIT was proved as useful tool in screening and discrimination of severe drunker through DTI.

Age-related White Matter Changes (WMC) on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are known to appear frequently in Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer's disease and to be related to cognitive impairment. The characterization of these WMC is very important to the study of psychology and aging. These changes consist of periventricular and subcortical types, however it is difficult to detect and segment WMC using only intensity-based methods, because their intensity, level IS similar to th~t of the gray matter (GM). In this paper, we propose a new method of segmenting periventricular WMC using K-means clustering and morphological features.

The more N fertilizer, the more grass proportion (58 8, 240 kg N/ha) and the less white clover (Trifolium repens) (6 %, 240 kg N) under grazing utilization. The proportion of white clover was maintained about 27 % at 60 kg N/ha/yr and weed proportion was reached 33 %. Under the condition of differentiated N rates, the proportion of white clover was ranged from 10 to 36 % at 20 kg N/ha/cut which was allocated after every grazing and it probably dependent on differentiated N rates rather than total amounts of N applied annually. 53-74 % of total dry matter yield were concentrated at 1st and 2nd growth under grazing system and there were no great differences in dry matter yield at 3rd, 4th, and 5th growth in comparison with the variations of N rates. There was very significant relationship between the proportions of white clover and the amounts of N uptaken by herbage upto 180 kg N/ha. About 138 kg N/ha were uptaken by herbage without N fertilizer but only with white clover (31 %) as a substitute of N. In the amounts of crude fiber and crude protein by differentiation of N fertilizer, there were no any great variations and liveweightgain during grazing periods was reached 1583 kg liveweightlha.
This study is to segment white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) on a brain MR image of coronal section and to calculate the volume of each. First, we segmented the whole region of a brain from a black colored background, a skull and a fat layer. Then, we calculated the partial volume of each component, which was present in scanning finite thickness, with the arithmetical analysis of gray value from the internal region of a brain showing the blurring effects on the basis of the MR image forming principle. Calculated partial volumes of white matter, gray matter and CSF were used to determine the threshold for the segmentation of each component on a brain MR image showing the blurring effects. Finally, the volumes of segmented white matter, gray matter, and CSF were calculated. The result of this study can be used as the objective diagnostic method to determine the degree of brain atrophy of patients who have neurodegenertive diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral palsy.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) VIII is an autosomal dominant inherited connective tissue disorder characterized by intractable periodontal inflammation, absence of gingiva, pretibial plaques, skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and tissue fragility with onset in the childhood or adolescence. In a recent report, heterozygous variants of the C1R or C1S related to the classical complement pathway were identified in families with history of EDS VIII. The current report describes a Korean 34-year-old female carrying a novel missense variant of C1R c.925T>G (p.Cys309Gly) and exhibiting early severe periodontitis, skin fragility, and joint hypermobility. The patient also had frontal, parietal, and temporal white matter brain lesions without definite vascular abnormalities on brain magnetic resonance imaging, which have not been surveyed meticulously in EDS VIII. Considering the genetic alteration of classic complement pathways in this condition, it is necessary to carefully observe multisystemic inflammation processes such as changes in brain white matter.
8 patients of delayed CO sequelae were evaluated using Brain CT and $^{99m}Tc-HMPAO$ SPECT. The results were as follows; 1) CT findings of delayed CO sequleae were bilateral low density lesion in globus pallidus (l pt.), diffuse low density in white matter with bilateral low density in white matter (l pt.), diffuse low density in white matter with bilateral low density in globus pallidus (l pt.), diffuse low density in white matter with cortical atrophy (l pt.), bilateral low density in globus pallidus and diffuse low density in white matter with cortical atrophy (l pt.) and normal in 3 pts. 2) $^{99m}Tc-HMPAO$ Brain SPECT findings of delayed CO sequelae were decreased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in frontal (1 among 8 pts.), frontal and basal ganglia (3 among 8 pts.), and diffuse patch decreased rCBF pattern (4 among 8 pts.) 3) $^{99m}Tc-HMPAO$ Brain SPECT study was well correlated with neurologic symptoms and signs in delayed CO sequelae. Our results may suggest that reduced cerebral blood flow contributes to the development of delayed CO sequelae.
Diffusion tensor images were obtained to investigate the damage of brain white matter in non-smokers and an adequate drinking group (less than 10 points) selected by scores of the Korean versions of alcohol use disorders identification test questionnaire. Factional anisotropy (FA) values, according to the variables of age and body mass index (BMI), were not statistically significant in all regions of the brain white matter after measurement of factional anisotropy (FA) values by the tract-based spatial statics (TBSS) method. In other words, age and body mass index (BMI) do not significantly affect the microstructural changes of the brain white matter.

Purpose: To identify characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features to differentiate between Krabbe disease and metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) in young children. Materials and Methods: We collected all confirmed cases of Krabbe disease and MLD between October 2004 and September 2020 at Seoul National University Children's Hospital. Patients with initial MRI available were included. Their initial MRIs were retrospectively reviewed for the following: 1) presence of white matter signal abnormality involving the periventricular and deep white matter, subcortical white matter, internal capsule, brainstem, and cerebellum; 2) presence of volume decrease and signal alteration in the corpus callosum and thalamus; 3) presence of the tigroid sign; 4) presence of optic nerve hypertrophy; and 5) presence of enhancement or diffusion restriction. Results: Eleven children with Krabbe disease and 12 children with MLD were included in this study. There was no significant difference in age or symptoms at onset. Periventricular and deep white matter signal alterations sparing the subcortical white matter were present in almost all patients of the two groups. More patients with Krabbe disease had T2 hyperintensities in the internal capsule and brainstem than patients with MLDs. In contrast, more patients with MLD had T2 hyperintensities in the splenium and genu of the corpus callosum. No patient with Krabbe disease showed T2 hyperintensity in the corpus callosal genu. A decrease in volume in the corpus callosum and thalamus was more frequently observed in patients with Krabbe disease than in those with MLD. Other MRI findings including the tigroid sign and optic nerve hypertrophy were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Signal abnormalities in the internal capsule and brainstem, decreased thalamic volume, decreased splenial volume accompanied by signal changes, and absence of signal changes in the callosal genu portion were MRI findings suggestive of Krabbe disease rather than MLD based on initial MRI. Other MRI findings such as the tigroid sign could not help differentiate between these two diseases.
