A Precise Position Control of Mobile Robot with Two Wheels (2휠 구동 모바일 로봇의 정밀 위치제어)

  • Two-wheeled driying mobild robots are precise controlled in terms of linear contol methods without considering the nonlinear dynamical characteristics. However, in the high maneuvering situations such as fast turn and abrupt start and stop, such neglected terms become dominant and heavy influence the overall driving performance. This study describes the nonlinear optimal control method to take advantage of the exact nonlinear dynamics of the balancing robot. Simulation results indicate that the optimal control outperforms in the respect of transient performance and required wheel torques. A design example is suggested for the state matrix that provides design flexibility in the control. It is shown that a well-planned state matrix by reflecting the physics of a balancing robot greatly conrtibutes to the driving performance and stability.

신경망을 이용한 차동조향 이동로봇의 추적제어

  • In this paper, we propose a controller for differentially steered wheeled mobile robots. The controller uses input-output linearization algorithm and artificial neural network to stabilize the dynamic model and compensate uncertainties. The proposed neural network part has 6 inputs, 1 hidden layer, 2 torque outputs and features fast online learning and good performance on structure error learning basis. Simulation results show that the proposed controller perform precisely tracking of reference path and is robust to uncertainties.

Robust Control Design for a Two-Wheeled Inverted Pendulum Mobile Robot (이륜 도립진자 이동로봇을 위한 강인제어기 설계)

  • The research on two-wheeled inverted pendulum (TWIP) mobile robots has been ongoing in a number of robotic laboratories around the world. In this paper, we consider a robust controller design for the TWIP mobile robot driving on uniform slopes. We use a 2 degree-of-freedom (DOF) model which is obtained by restricting the spinning motion in a 3 DOF motion dynamic equation. In order to design the robust controller guaranteeing stability of the TWIP mobile robot driving on inclined surface, we propose a sliding mode control based on the theory of variable structure systems and design a sliding surface using the theory of the linear quadratic regulation (LQR). For simulation, the dynamic model of the TWIP mobile robot is constructed using Mathworks' Simulink and the sliding mode control is also implemented using Simulink. From simulation results, we show that the proposed controller effectively controls the TWIP mobile robot driving on slopes.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive control algorithm for nonholonomic mobile robots with unknown parameters and the proposed control method is used in numerical simulations for applying to a practical twowheeled welding mobile robot(WMR). The proposed adaptive controller to track an arbitrary given welding path is designed by using back-stepping technique and is derived for a nonlinear model under the assumption such that the system parameters are partially known. Moreover, the proposed adaptive control system is stable in the sense of Lyapunov stability. Inertia moments of system are considered to be unknown parameters and their values can be estimated simply by using update laws proposed in an adaptive control scheme of this research. The simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the accurate tracking capability of the proposed controller for two-wheeled welding mobile robot with a smooth curved reference welding path.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision-based simultaneous localization and map-building (SLAM) algorithm. SLAM problem asks the location of mobile robot in the unknown environments. Therefore, this problem is one of the most important processes of mobile robots in the outdoor operation. To solve this problem, Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is widely used. However, this filter requires computational power (${\sim}O(N)$, N is the dimension of state vector). To reduce the computational complexity, we applied compressed extended Kalman filter (CEKF) to stereo image sequence. Moreover, because the mobile robots operate in the outdoor environments, we should estimate full d.o.f.s of mobile robot. To evaluate proposed SLAM algorithm, we performed the outdoor experiments. The experiment was performed by using new wheeled type mobile robot, Robhaz-6W. The performance results of CEKF SLAM are presented.

Isotropic Configurations of Omnidirectional Mobile Robots with Three Caster Wheels

  • In this paper, we identify the isotropic configurations of an omnidirectional mobile robot with three caster wheels, depending on the selection of actuated joints. First, We obtain the kinematic model of a caster wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot(COMR) without matrix inversion. For a given task velocity, the instantaneous motion of each wheel is decomposed into two orthogonal instantaneous motions of the steering and the rotating joints. Second, with the characteristic length introduced, we derive the isotropy conditions of a COMR having $n({\ge}3)$ actuated joints, which are imposed on two Jacobian matrices, $A{\in}R^{n{\times}3}$ and $B{\in}R^{6{\times}6}$. Under the condition of $B{\propto}I_6$, three caster wheels should have identical structure with the length of the steering link equal to the radius of the wheel. Third, depending on the selection of actuated joints, we derive the conditions for $A^t$ $A{\propto}I_3$ and identify the isotropic configurations of a COMR. All possible actuation sets with different number of actuated joints and different combination of rotating and steering joins are considered.

  • Odometry using wheel encoders is one of the fundamental techniques for the pose estimation of wheeled mobile robots. However, odometry has a drawback that the position errors are accumulated when the travel distance increases. Therefore, position errors are required to be reduced using appropriate calibration schemes. The UMBmark method is the one of the widely used calibration schemes for two wheel differential drive robots. In UMBmark method, it is assumed that odometry error sources are independent. However, there is coupled effect of odometry error sources. In this paper, a new calibration scheme by considering the coupled effect of error sources is proposed. We also propose the test track design for the proposed calibration scheme. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the odometry accuracy can be improved by the proposed calibration scheme.

  • Kinematic modeling is a prerequisite for motion planning and the control of mobile robots. In this paper, we proposed a new method of kinematic modeling for a type of mobile robot based on differential motion transformation. The differential motion implies a small translation and rotation in three-dimensional space in a small time interval. Thus, transformation of the differential motion gives the velocity relationship, i.e., Jacobian between two coordinate frames. Since the theory of the differential motion transformation is well-developed, it is useful for the systematic velocity kinematic modeling of mobile robots. In order to show the validity for application of the differential motion transformation, we obtained velocity kinematic models for a type of exemplar mobile robot including spherical ballbots.

  • In this paper, a method of generating trajectories in real time for a mobile robot in a dynamic environment is proposed. Specifically, this method is focused on soccer-playing robots that need to calculate trajectories in real time, which are constantly subject to rapidly change as targets and obstacles move. The robots also should move at the fastest available speed, while tracking the generated trajectories. The method proposed in this paper solves the geometric problem of finding a smooth curve that joins two endpoints. To have this solved, we assign five constraints to each endpoint, which are the usual x, y, theta, and curvature as well as the influence of the initial robot velocity on the path. With these five constraints, the path generated can always be physically followed by robot. Through this method, the travel time of the robot over the entire path can b optimized.   • In this paper, we propose a new approach to the autonomous and high-speed indoor navigation of wheeled mobile robots using hybrid system controller. The hierarchical structure of hybrid system presented consists of high-level reasoning process and the low-level motion control process and the environmental interaction. In a discrete event system, the discrete states are defined by the user-defined constraints and the reference motion commands are specified in the abstracted motions. The hybrid control system applied for the nonholonomic mobile robots can combine the motion planning and autonomous navigation with obstacle avoidance in the indoor navigation problem. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, the algorithm is implemented to the two-wheel driven mobile robot system. The experimental results show that the hybrid system approach is an effective method for the autonomous navigation in indoor environments.
