An accurate railway environmental noise prediction model is required to make the proper solution of the railway noise problems. In this paper, an engineering model for predicting the noise of conventional passenger cars is presented considering the acoustic source strength in octave-band frequencies and the propagation over grounds with varying surface properties. Since the formation of a train can be variable, the source strength of each locomotive and passenger car was estimated by measuring the pass-by noise and analysing the wheel-rail rolling noise. Some validation cases show on the average small differences between the predictions of the present model and the measurement results.
Recently, the bogie frame weight of Light Rail Transit system has been reduced in order to save energy and materials. However, this light weighted vehicle structure is very important to verify the fatigue strength at the development stage. Bogie system consists of bogie frame, suspensions, wheel-sets, braking system and transmission system. Among these components, the bogie frame is most significant component subjected to the whole vehicle and passenger loads. In this study, the bogie frame for the New LRT power car is evaluated to the static and fatigue strength. And the evaluation method is used the LRT Performance Test Standards Specification throughout the FEM analysis and static load test. The static and fatigue test results for the LRT bogie frame of power car has been appeared very safety and stable for the design load conditions.
Curved squeal noise may result when railway vehicles run on curved tracks. Contact between the wheels and the rails causes a stick-slip phenomenon, which generates squeal noise. In order to identify the mechanism of the squeal noise systematically, a scaled test rig has been fabricated. Knowledge of the contact forces between the wheels and the rail rollers is essential for investigating the squeal noise characteristics; however, it is difficult to measure there contact force. In this study, contact forces have been calculated indirectly according to the modal behavior of the subframe that supports the rail roller and the responses at specific positions of that subframe. In order to verify the estimated contact forces, the displacements at the contact points between the wheels and rail rollers have been calculated from the estimated forces; the resulting values have been compared with the measured displacement values. The SPL at the specific location has been calculated using the estimated contact forces and this also has been compared with the SPL, measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. The comparisons in displacements and SPLs show good correlation.
The dynamic stability of railway vehicle has been one of the important issues in railway safety. The dynamic simulator has been used in the study about the dynamic stability of railway vehicle and wheel/rail interface optimization. Especially, a small scale simulator has been widely used in the fundamental study in the laboratory instead of full scale roller rig which is not cost effective and inconvenient to achieve diverse design parameters. But the technique for the design of the small scale simulator about the dynamic characteristics of the wheel-rail system and the bogie system has not been well developed in Korea. Therefore, the research using the small-scaled derailment simulator and the 1/5 scaled bogie has been conducted. In this paper, we did running stability test of 1/5 scaled bogie using small-scaled derailment simulator. Also, for the operation of the small scaled simulator, it is required to investigate the performance and characteristics of the simulator system. This could be achieved by a comparative study between an analysis and an experiment. This paper presented the analytical model which could be used for verifying the test results and understanding of the physical behavior of the dynamic system comprising the small- scaled derailment simulator and the 1/5 scaled bogie.

A trial run of locally-developed tilting train has been in process on Chungbuk line since the test vehicle was first produced. For the system stabilization, interface verification among the systems including track, structure, catenary and signaling system, not to mention the rolling stock, is very crucial. In the area of wayside structure, the stability of track structure and train run shall be evaluated through the review of impact by increased speed by developed train on track structure. The study thus was intended to evaluate the impact on track while a tilting train is running the curve section, which is vulnerable to accelerated train speed. The analysis of tilting train test running the part of Chungbuk line and Honam line was conducted to identify the impact on existing track performance by tilting train. To identify the movement behavior of each part of track while tilting train, high speed train and traditional train (Mugunghwa and freight train) were running the existing line, wheel load, lateral wheel load, rail bending stress, vertical and lateral displacement of rail and vertical displacement of sleeper were compared and analyzed so as to evaluate the expected impact by tilting train for improving the train speed.
In this study, regulation of the performance test load of a vibration-proof fastening system used in urban railways was established through evaluation of the loads that it bears in the field. In order to investigate the range of the dynamic stiffness of the vibration-proof fastening system, dynamic stiffness tests were carried out for three types of vibration-proof fastening system that can be domestically supplied. Train and track interaction analyses in the frequency domain were carried out to evaluate the dynamic wheel loads. The track irregularity, which is a very important input factor in train and track interaction analysis, was considered as a PSD (Power Spectral Density) function, which was derived based on the measured data. The loads on the vibration-proof rail fastening system were evaluated considering various operating conditions in the urban railway. Regulation of the performance test load of the vibration-proof rail fastening system was established based on the evaluated loads.

Railroad level crossing systems are used to prevent train from collisions by informing pedestrians and vehicles of approaching trains on the level crossing. The current detection systems mostly use track-based electrical circuits to detect approaching trains. The making and breaking of the circuit when the train wheel passes along the track sends a signal to barriers that restrict access to the track. Unfortunately, this track-based signal system is vulnerable to malfunctions in certain situations. If the rail becomes rusted due to moisture, weather conditions, or infrequent use, the electrical circuit detection system could fail. Such a failure could lead to a train-vehicle or train-pedestrian collision. This paper suggests a replacement of the electrical circuit-based system with an infrared detection system. The research shows that an infrared detection system improves safety by reducing the frequency of detection failure of the alarming circuit to system.
High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.
This study aimed to investigate the random vibration characteristic of train-slab track-bridge interaction system subjected to both track irregularities and earthquakes by use of pseudo-excitation method (PEM). Each vehicle subsystem was modeled by multibody dynamics. A three-dimensional rail-slab- girder-pier finite element model was created to simulate slab track and bridge subsystem. The equations of motion for the entire system were established based on the constraint condition of no jump between wheel and rail. The random load vectors of equations of motion were formulated by transforming track irregularities and seismic accelerations into a series of deterministic pseudo-excitations according to their respective power spectral density (PSD) functions by means of PEM. The time-dependent PSDs of random vibration responses of the system were obtained by step-by-step integration method, and the corresponding extreme values were estimated based on the first-passage failure criterion. As a case study, an ICE3 high-speed train passing a fifteen-span simply supported girder bridge simultaneously excited by track irregularities and earthquakes is presented. The evaluated extreme values and the PSD characteristic of the random vibration responses of bridge and train are analyzed, and the influences of train speed and track irregularities (without earthquakes) on the random vibration characteristic of bridge and train are discussed.
The dynamic characteristic test result of electric rail car which is operated in Incheon International Airport Railroad is described in this paper. Express train in Incheon International Airport Railroad drives at 120km/h first in the country and derailment coefficient was measured for empty car and full-loaded car respectively. The measurement result of derailment coefficient, a key safety indicator about derailment, of empty car was higher than full-loaded car and both were lower than 0.8. The railway state wasn't good in operated section where is serviced about 80eh and derailment coefficient also increased. Horizontal pressure was below 2.1 ton at empty car and below 2.4 ton at full-loaded car. The electric rail car in Incheon International Airport Railroad has been confirmed it's running safety at 120km/h by the measurement of derailment coefficient. But the way of assessing applied in this paper has demerits such as complication of test method, difficulty for measurement device installation and high cost. Therefore the method which is simple to measure and can certify vehicle's safety even when service driving has to be researched.
