  • Effect of surface topography on the water wetting nature and micro/nano tribological characteristics of Si-wafer and PTFE was experimentally studied. The ion beam treatment was performed with a hollow cathode ion gun in different argon don dose conditions in a vacuum chamber to change the surface topography, Micro/nano tribological characteristics, water wetting angles and roughness were measured with a micro tribo tester, SPM (scanning prove microscope), contact anglemeter and profilometer, respectively. Results showed that surface roughness increased with the argon ion dose. The water wetting angle of tile ion beam treated samples also increased with the ion dose. Results also showed that micro-adhesion and micro-friction depend on the wetting characteristics of the PTFE samples. However, nano-triboloSical characteristics showed little dependence on the wetting angles. The water wetting characteristics of modified PTFE samples were discussed in terms of the surface topographic characteristics.

  • Micro/nano tribological and water wetting characteristics of ion beam treated PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) surfaces were experimentally studied. The ion beam treatment was performed with a hollow cathode ion gun at different argon ion dose conditions in a vacuum chamber to modify the topography of PTFE surface. Micro/nano tribological characteristics, water wetting angles and roughness were measured with a micro tribe tester, SPM (scanning probe microscope), contact anglemeter and profilometer, respectively. Results showed that surface roughness increased with the argon ion dose. Water wetting angle of the ion beam treated samples increased with the ion dose, so the surface shows an ultra-hydrophobic nature. Micro-adhesion and micro-friction depend on the wetting characteristics of the PTFE samples. However, nano-tribological characteristics showed different results. The scale effect of surface topography on tribological characteristics was discussed. Also, the water wetting characteristics of modified PTFE samples were discussed in terms of the surface topographic characteristics.

  • Wettability is an important factor to decide solderability of solder, flux, other soldering-related materials and soldering conditions. The wettability also affects the reliability of solder joint. Wetting balance test is a good method for quantitatively measuring wettability between solder and substrate. The wetting balance test is easy to reproduce the wetting experiment and to measure the wetting time and force. And this test provides wetting curve to calculate the surface tension of the molten solder. Development of new solder has been continued in accordance with various and harsh environment in the electronics industry. In this paper, the principle of wetting balance test and recent research issues including nano-composite solder are explained.

  • To investigate the unsaturated characteristics of the Boeun granite weathered soil, matric suction and volumetric water content were measured in both drying and wetting paths using Automated Soil-Water Characteristics Curve Apparatus. Based on the measured results, Soil-Water Characteristics Curve was estimated by van Genuchten (1980) model. The relationship between effective degree of saturation and matric suction showed the non-linear curve with S-shape and the hysteresis phenomenon occurred during drying and wetting paths. Suction Stress Characteristics Curve was estimated by the Lu and Likos (2006) model. The suction stress in drying path was constantly maintained and that in wetting path tended to increase when the effective degree of saturation was low. But the suction stress in drying path was larger than that in wetting path at the same degree of saturation when the effective degree of saturation became larger. Meanwhile, Hydraulic Conductivity Function was evaluated by the van Genuchten (1980) model which is one of the parameter estimation methods. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity decreased with increasing the matric suction, and the decreasing velocity regarding to the matric suction in drying path was larger than that in wetting path.

  • Fuel spray characteristics of the gasoline engine injector has been studied experimentally. To provide fundamental performance data of 4-hole and 12-hole injectors, spray fuel-mass distribution, wall wetting fuel amount and visualization of injectors have been tested and measured with various fuel supply pressure conditions. Spray visualization has been performed to analyze spray formation, spray angle, stream width and penetration length. Test result shows that wall wetting is greatly influenced by the induction air amount and spray atomization. Spray visualization shows that the 12-hole injector has robust performance characteristics with various fuel supply pressure conditions compared with the 4-hole injector. 4-hole injector generates relatively less wall-wetting fuel amount than 12-hole injector does.

  • Textile materials are frequently in contact with surfactant solutions during their manufacturing or finishing processes as well as cleaning processes in use. Liquid wetting, wicking and absorbency of textile materials, and the liquid properties, surface characteristics and pore geometry of textile materials, and the liquie-solid interactions, In this paper, 10 different nonionic surfactants, including Span 20, Twen 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85, were used. The surfactants were characterized by their hydrophile-lipophile-balance (HLB) values, structures, and surface tensions. The 0.1g/dL and 1.0g/dL surfactant solutions, which were both above critical micelle concentration (CMC), were used to see the concentration effects on the wetting and absorbency of cotton fabrics. The wetting behavior and liquid retention properties of hydrophobic cotton fabrics with different nonionic surfactant solutions are reported. The contact angles are greatly decreased and the water retention values are greatly increased by adding most of the surfactants studied into the system. The extents of this effects are influenced by the characteristics of surfactants and its solutions. Hydrophilic surfactants which have low number of carbon atoms or unsaturated hydrophobe structures are more effective in improving the wetting and absorbancy of hydrophobic cotton fabrics. The water retention of hydrophobic cotton fabrics has positive relations with $cos{\theta}$, adhesion tension and work of adhesion. The 1.0g/dL surfactant solutions show similar, but slightly improved wetting and absorbency characteristics of hydrophobic cotton fabrics compared to the 0.1g/dL surfactant solutions.

  • Fuel spray characteristics of the gasoline engine injector has been studied experimentally. Wall wetting fuel stream of the 4-hole and 12-hole injectors has been tested and measured with various installation angle and port masking shapes. Spray visualization has been performed to analyze spray formation, spray angle, and penetration length. Test result shows that wall wetting is greatly influenced by the induction air flow and injector installation angle. Wall wetting amount decreased as injector installation angle decreased. Masking decreased wall wetting amount by increasing local intake-air flow velocity due to the decreased section area. Spray visualization showed that the 12-hole injector has robust performance characteristics compared with the 4-hole injector.

  • Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in about 400km section at 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. In spite of little study for this wetting collapse problem, it has been recognized that the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills exhibit low compressibility at low pressures, but there can be significant compression at high pressures due to grain crushing by several researchers(Marachi et al. 1969, Nobari and Duncan 1972, Noorany et al. 1994, Houston et al. 1993, Wu 2004). The characteristics of compression of fill materials depend on a number of factors such as soil/rock type, as-compacted moisture, density, stress level and wetting condition. Because of the complexity of these factors, it is not easy to predict quantitatively the amount of compression without extensive tests. Therefore, in this research I carried out the wetting collapse tests, with focusing in various soil/rock type, stress levels, wetting condition more closely.

For this wetting settlement problem, we showed the test results carried out with 4 fill materials. These tests were performed under the condition that the fill materials were inundated at the first wetting. Subsequently, in this study, we investigated the long-term settlement characteristics of the fill materials under the repeated partial wetting and rising of the ground water table happend by rainfall.
