  • We have studied the inkjet patterning of synthesized aqueous silver nano-sol on interface-controlled ITO glass substrate. Furthermore, we designed the conductive ink for direct inkjet patterning on bare ITO glass substrate. The first, the highly concentrated polymeric dispersant-assisted silver nano sol was prepared by variation of molecular weight and control of initial nucleation and growth of silver nanoparticles. The high concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible to 40 wt%. At the same time the particle size of silver nanoparticles was below $10{\sim}20nm$. The second, the synthesized silver nano sol was inkjet - patterned on ITO glass substrate. The connectivity and width of fine line depended largely on the wettability of silver nano sol on ITO glass substrate, which was controlled by surfactant. The relationship was understood by wetting angle. The fine line of silver electrode as fine as $50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$ was successfully formed on ITO glass substrate. The last, the direct inkjet-patternable silver nano sol on bare ITO glass substrate was designed also.

  • It is expected that the inkjet technology offers prospect for reliable and low cost manufacturing of FPD (Flat Panel Display). This inkjet technology also offers a more simplified manufacturing process for various part of the FPD than conventional process. For example, recently the novel manufacturing processes of color filter (C/F) in LCD, or RGB patterning in OLED by inkjet printing method have been developed. This elaborates will be considered as the precious point of manufacturing process for the mass production of enlarged-display panel with a low price. On this point of view, we would like to review the status of inkjet technology in FPD, with some results on forming micro line by inkjet patterning of suspension type silver nano ink as below. We have studied the inkjet patterning of synthesized aqueous silver nano-sol on interface-controlled ITO glass substrate. Furthermore, we designed the conductive ink for direct inkjet patterning on bare ITO glass substrate. The first, the highly concentrated polymeric dispersant-assisted silver nano sol was prepared. • We report on a simple method for inducing physical and chemical property-gradient on nanoimprinted patterns by intensity-regulated plasma treatment under caved sample stage. As for the size gradient, a line pattern having a linewidth of 294.9 nm was etched to have gradually varying width from 277.4 nm to 147.9 nm. Modified pattern was proven to be adaptable to replica stamp for reversal patterning. To investigate the wettability gradient, imprinted nanopatterns were coated with fluoroalkylsilane to increase the hydrophobicity, and the surface was modified to have gradually varying wettability from hydrophobic to hydrophilic (contact angle was ${\sim}160^{\circ}$ to ${\sim}5^{\circ}$ on a single chip). This method is expected to be applicable to the selective adsorption of biological entities and hydrodynamic manipulation of liquid droplets for the pumpless microfluidics.

  • We report an ultraclean, cost-effective, and easily scalable method of transferring and patterning large-area graphene using pressure sensitive adhesive films (PSAFs) at room temperature. This simple transfer is enabled by the difference in wettability and adhesion energy of graphene with respect to PSAF and a target substrate. The PSAF transferred graphene is found to be free from residues, and shows excellent charge carrier mobility as high as ${\sim}17,700cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ with less doping compared to the graphene transferred by thermal release tape (TRT) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as well as good uniformity over large areas. In addition, the sheet resistance of graphene transferred by recycled PSAF does not change considerably up to 4 times, which would be advantageous for more cost-effective and environmentally friendly production of large-area graphene films for practical applications.

  • Some living thingsuse micro- or nano- structures for living in nature. Scientists and engineers made efforts to mimic them, and they succeeded in making new types of applications. They used 'Namib desert beetle' to self-filling device by moisture harvesting and 'lotus leaf' to self-cleaning device by water repelling. 'Namib desert beetle' and lotus leaf have micro-patterns on their surface, which consists of hydrophobic or hydrophilic materials [1]. Moreover, micro-patterns on the surface make self-filling or self-cleaning property enhanced because of the surface roughness. Surface roughness enhances wettability [2]. Micro-pattern is a significant factor to make the surface be functional, so we want to make new types of functional surface by micro-patterning. In this work,we make several functional micro-patterns (radial, line, and dot arrays) using maskless lithography and analyze the characteristics of each micro-pattern. In order to analyze and understand surface characteristics, micro-patterns with varying sizes are investigated. All experiments are proceeded on mr-DWL5 photo resists coated on silicon wafers in same condition. All the experiments have demonstrated good performances about hydrophobic or hydrophilic property corresponding to their material and structural combinations. In radial micro-pattern, although the surface is flat, water drops on hydrophilic radial pattern can be convergent to a middle point and water drops on hydrophobic radial pattern can be divergent from the middle point. In line array micro-pattern, water drops can roll off along only one direction in parallel with the line arrays. Such phenomena might be mainly caused by the local change of surface roughness. From these results, controlling the movement and direction of water drops is made feasible without introducing a slope, which can potentially be used for new types of applications.

  • This paper describes the simple nanopatterning of proteins on polyelectrolyte surfaces using microcontact printing with a nanopatternable, hydrophilic composite nanomold. The composite nanomold was easily fabricated by blending two UV-curable materials composed of Norland Optical Adhesives(NOA) 63 and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate(PEG-DMA). NOA 63 provided stable nanostructure formation and PEG-DMA induced high wettability of proteins in the nanomold. Using the composite mold and functionalized surface with polyelectrolytes, the fluorescent, isothiocyanate-tagged, bovine serum albumin(FITC-BSA) was successfully patterned with 8 nm height and 500 nm width. To confirm the feasibility of the protein assay on a nanoscale, a glycoprotein-lectin assay was successfully demonstrated as a model system. As expected, the lectins correctly recognized the nano-patterned glycoproteins such as chicken ovalbumin. The simple preparation of composite nanomold and functionalized surface with a universal platform can be applied to various biomolecules such as DNA, proteins, carbohydrates, and other biomolecules on a nanoscale.

  • We demonstrate the desert beetle back mimicking hybrid superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic patterned surface by using the combination method of colloidal lithography and gravure offset printing for nano and micro patterning, respectively. The two methods are cost-effective and industrially available techniques compared to the other nano/micro patterning methods. To verify the water collecting function of the hybrid surface, the water condensation behavior is investigated on the chilled surface in ambient temperature and high humidity. Due to the synergetic effect of drop and film wise condensation, the hybrid superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic surface shows the higher efficiency than one of single wettability surfaces. The work is underway to get the good patterns of hybrid surfaces for water collecting from the dew or fog.

  • We developed a novel fabrication method of polydimethylsioxane (PDMS) lens, which can easily control the shapes of the lens using soft lithography with common photolithography and water droplet molding. A mold for PDMS lens was prepared by patterning of hydrophobic photoresist on the hydrophilic substrate and dispensing small water droplets onto the predefined hydrophilic patterns. The size of patterns determined the dimension of the lens and the dispensed volume of the water droplet decided the radius of curvature of the PDMS lens independently. The water droplet with photoresist pattern played a robustly fixed mold for lens due to difference in wettability. The radius of curvature could be calculated theoretically because the water droplets could approximate spherical cap on the substrate. Finally, concave and convex PDMS lenses which could reduce or magnify optically were fabricated by curing of PDMS on the prepared mold. The measured radii of the fabricated PDMS lenses were well matched with the estimated values. We believe that our simple and efficient fabrication method can be adopted to PDMS microlens and extended to micro optical device, lab on a chip, and sensor technology.
