Using the results of CTD casts made in Spring from 2017 to 2021, in this study we investigated the water mass distribution and occurrence of temperature inversion in the western seas of Jeju Island in spring. The distribution of water masses was characterized by cold and fresh water in the northwest and warm and saline water in the southeast, forming a strong thermohaline front running in the southwest-to-northeast direction. Strong temperature inversion mainly occurred in the frontal boundary when the cold water intrudes beneath the warm water at depths of 30-50 m. Analysis of the mixing ratio demonstrated that Jeju Warm Water is dominantly distributed in the western seas of Jeju Island, but its ratio can be modified depending on the southward extension of Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW). Results of in situ measurement showed that in 2020, the YSCW largely expanded to the western seas of Jeju Island, occupying approximately 40 % of the mixing ratio. Due to the expansion of YSCW, a strong thermohaline front was formed in the study area, thereby causing thick and strong temperature inversion. On the other hand, in 2018 the mixing ratio of YSCW was minimum (~18%) during the study period of 2017-2021, and thus a relatively weak frontal boundary was formed, without the occurrence of temperature inversion. The observational results also suggest that the interannual changes of water mass distribution and the associated temperature inversion in the western seas of Jeju Island are closely related with wind-driven Yellow Sea circulation in spring, which is the summer monsoon transition period.
The primary production (PP) by phytoplankton in marine ecosystems is essential for carbon cycling and fueling food webs. Hence, estimating the PP in the territorial sea of each country is a necessary step to achieving carbon neutrality. To estimate the PP in the territorial sea of the Republic of Korea from 2005 to 2021, we analyzed various physiochemical parameters, such as sea surface temperature (SST), Secchi depth, and concentrations of chlorophyll-a and nutrients in the seas of five regions, including the East Sea, West Sea, western South Sea, eastern South Sea, and the waters off Jeju Island. During the 17-year study period, the SST tended to increase, while the nutrient concentrations declined, except in the Jeju area. Overall, the PP did not show a specific temporal trend, but daily PP in the western South Sea was the highest among the five regions. Moreover, the maximum PP in the Korean territorial waters (76,450 km2) was estimated at 11,227 Gg C y-1, which accounts for 0.03% of the global PP. The results may give insights into a better understanding of the PP, further resource utilization, and environmental sustainability in the studied region.

We conducted a time-series analysis of temperature and salinity of sea water around Jeju Island, Korea. Monthly mean temperature and salinity was influenced by precipitation and weather conditions on Jeju as well as by oceanographic conditions of the open sea such as the Tsushima Warm Current and sea water in coastal areas. Salinity of Jeju coastal waters was the highest in April, and it was always over 34.00 psu with tiny fluctuation between December and June. Due to the effects of the Tsushima Warm Current, Jeju coastal waters maintained high salinity and stability. Low salinity and its large fluctuations during summer were closely associated with the China Coastal Water and precipitation in Jeju. The place of the lowest water temperature was the northeast coasts of Jeju (Gimneong, Hado, Jongdalri). In winter, as warmer water of the Tsushima Warm Current appeared in western area of Jeju dwindled flowing along the northern coasts of Jeju area and becoming cool, the lowest water temperature often appeared locally in Gimnyeong and its vicinitly in summer. The Tsushima Warm Current flows into the east entrance of Jeju Strait, but its influence is weak because of geometry and strong vertical mixing due to fast tidal currents.

In this study, the wave power resources at the southern sea of Korea were estimated by using the hindcasted wave data of previous researches. The used data were wave heights, periods and directions which were hindcasted around the Korea peninsular from 1979 to 2003. The spatial resolution of the hindcasted data is $1/6^{\circ}$(about 18 km). In winter, the northwest monsoon increase the wave power, while the wave power around Korea peninsular is very small in spring. The maximum value of the annual mean wave power is about 13 kW/m at Gageo-do, Heuksan-do and western region of Jeju-do, while those at the southern sea of Korea is only 4 kW/m, which is relatively small. The wave power at Korean east sea is lower than that of Korean southern sea. We obtained the wave resources information, in a fine grid, at Gageo-do, Heuksan-do, and western sea of Jeju-do, by solving SWAN model with the boundary conditions of hindcasted wave data.
The purpose of this study is to summarize tropical cyclone activity in 2007. 24 tropical cyclones of tropical storm (TS) intensity or higher formed in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2007. The total number is less than the thirty-year (1971~2000) average frequency of 26.7. Out of twenty four tropical cyclones, 14 TCs reached typhoon (TY) intensity, while the rest 10 only reached severe tropical storm (STS) and tropical storm (TS) intensity - four STS and six TS storms. The tropical cyclone season in 2007 began in April with the formation of KONG-REY (0701). From April to May, two TCs formed in the western North Pacific in response to enhanced convective activity there. From June to July, convective activity turned inactive over the sea around the Philippines and in the South China Sea, and the subtropical high was weak over the south of Japan. MAN-YI (0704) and USAGI (0705) moved northwestward and hit Japan, bringing serious damage to the country. After August, convective activity became enhanced over the sea east of the Philippines, and the subtropical high turned strong over the sea south of Japan. Many TCs, which formed over the sea east of the Philippines and in the South China Sea, moved westward and hit China and Vietnam. PABUK (0706), WUTIP (0707), SEPAT (0708), WIPHA (0712), LEKIMA (0714) and KROSA (0715) brought serious damage to some countries including China, the Philippines and Vietnam. On the other hand, FITOW (0709) and NARI (0711) moved northward, bringing serious damage to Japan and Korea. After HAIYAN (0716), all four TCs except FAXAI (0720) formed over the sea east of $140^{\circ}E$. Three typhoons among them affected Republic of Korea, MAN-YI (0704), USAGI (0705) and NARI (0711). Particularly, NARI (0711) moved northward and made landfall at Goheng Peninsula ($34.5^{\circ}N$, $127.4^{\circ}E$) in 1815 KST 16 September. Due to $11^{th}$ typhoon NARI, strong wind and record-breaking rainfall amount was observed in Jeju Island. It was reported that the daily precipitation was 420.0 mm at Jeju city, Jeju Island on 16 September the highest daily rainfall since Jeju began keeping records in 1927. This typhoon hit the southern part of the Korean peninsula and Jeju Island. 18 people lost their lives, 14,170 people were evacuated and US$ 1.6 billion property damage was occurred.

Salinity does not generally affect sound speed because it shows very small variations in the ocean. However, low salinity water appears in the Western Sea of Jeju Island every summer so that sound speed and sound propagation can change near sea surface. We calculated Sound Speed Profile (SSP) using vertical profiles of temperature and salinity, which were averaged over years of normal salinity and low salinity (<28 psu) from 30 years (1980~2009) at 3 sites of Korea Oceanographic Data Center (KODC). As a result, sound speed variation by low salinity alone was -5.36 m/s at sea surface and -1.35 m/s at 10m depth for low salinity environments. Gradient of SSP was positive down to 5 m depth due to decrease of sound speed near surface, leading formation of haline channel. Simulation of acoustic propagation using a ray model (Bellhop) confirmed the haline channel. Haline channel has formed 4 times while hydrostatic channel controlled by only pressure has formed 9 times for 30 years. The haline channel showed larger critical angles of rays than hydrostatic channel. Haline channel was also formed at some sites among 20 measurement sites in low salinity water mass which appeared on August $1^{st}$ 2010.
The data of 37 oceanographic stations in the coastal sea of Jeju island are compiled in terms of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, silicate, nitrate and phosphate to analyge the chelnical characteristics in this region. This work was carried out during June, 1951. The concentrations of nutrients in the layer more than 50 m are generally 0.5-3 times larger than the surface layer. Each constituents in this layer are as follows: temperature ranged 11.8 to $15.4^{\circ}C$ and salinity, 33.8 to $34.8\%_{\circ}$; and also dissolved oxygen and slicate are 5.2 to 5.6ml/l and 5.6 to $9.0{\mu}g-at/l$, respectively. And nitrate and phosphate ranged 1.0 to $6.0{\mu}g-at/l$ and 0.1 to $0.5{\mu}g-at/l$, respectively. The coastal sea of Jeju island is divided into two parts in chemical view point : one is the southeastern sea of Jeju island under the influence of the Tsushima Current, md the other is the northeastern sea of Jejo island under the influence of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water and the south coastal water of Korea. The north-western sea of Jeju island had relatively a cold (about $13^{\circ}C$) and low saline water (about $34\%_{\circ}$), and dissolved oxygen was higher than in the neibouring waters. It seems that in the southern area between Moseulpo and Seogwipo of Jeju island, two different Ivater masses are complicately intermixed and a tidal front is formed.

Change of mean sea level in the western coast of Korean peninsula was estimated with the observed tide data of the KHOA. The cause of the change was investigated. Mean sea levels in the western coast have been changed due to coastal development projects in the coastal zone. The estimated variations, which are significantly different regionally, vary from -6.8 cm in Incheon to 38 cm in Gunsan. The changing rate of mean sea level occurred by natural factors such as global warming varies from 1.1 mm/year in the north to 4.4 mm/year in the south of western coast of Korean peninsula. In Jeju, sea level rise and rise of sea temperature showed a close relationship. Water temperature rise of one degree increases mean sea level to 0.6 mm in Jeju. Rising rate of mean sea level has increased rapidly after the mid-1980s.
China Coastal Water (CCW) usually appears in the seas surrounding Jeju Island annually (June?October) and is very pronounced in August. The power spectrum density (PSD), sea level anomalies (SLAs), and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were found to peak annually and semiannually. The peaks at intervals of 80-, 60-, and 43-days are considered to be influenced by CCW and the Kuroshio Current. Generally, low-salinity water appears to the west of Jeju Island from June through October and gradually propagates to the east, where CCW meets the Tsushima Current. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of SLAs and SSTs indicated that the variance in SLAs and SSTs was 55.70 and 98.09% in the first mode, respectively. The PSD for the first mode of EOF analysis of SLAs was stronger in the western than in the eastern waters because of the influence of CCW. The PSD for the EOF analysis of SSTs was similar in all areas (the Yangtze Estuary and the waters to the west and east of Jeju Island), with a period of approximately 260 days.

The feeding habits of Sebastiscus marmoratus collected from the Western Coastal Waters of Jeju Island between June 2008 and July 2009 were studied based on examination of the stomach contents. A total 254 individuals of S. marmoratus ranged from 13.2 to 29.6cm (mean 20.7cm) in Standard length (SL). S. marmoratus consumed mainly teleosts such as Chromis notata and Sebastes inermis. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. The individuals smaller than 15cm SL consumed mainly shrimps, but on the other hand the individuals larger than 25cm SL consumed mainly fishes. The proportion of fish consumption increased with increasing size of S. marmoratus.
