  • Typical search engines may not be the most efficient means of returning images in accordance with user requirements. With the help of semantic web technology, it is possible to search through images more precisely in any required domain, because the images are annotated according to a custom-built ontology. With appropriate annotations, a search can then, return images according to the context. This paper reports on the design of a tourism ontology relevant to touristic images. In particular, the image features and the meaning of the images are described using various properties, along with other types of information relevant to tourist attractions using the OWL language. The methodology used is described, commencing with building an image and tourism corpus, creating the ontology, and developing the search engine. The system was tested through a case study involving the western region of Thailand. The user can search specifying the specific class of image or they can use text-based searches. The results are ranked using weighted scores based on kinds of properties. The precision and recall of the prototype system was measured to show its efficiency. User satisfaction was also evaluated, was also performed and was found to be high.

  • The incidental finding of an enlarged mastoid foramen on the right posterior mastoid region of temporal bone is reported, together with a discussion of its clinical significance. A 67-year-old female underwent the pre-implant assessment of a maxillary left edentulous region. A cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) image was acquired and referred for consultation. Axial CBCT slices revealed a unilateral, well-defined, noncorticated, low-attenuation, transosseous defect posterior to the mastoid air cells in the right temporal bone. The borders of the osseous defect were smooth and continuous. No other radiographic signs suggestive of erosion or sclerosis were noted in the vicinity. The density within the defect was homogenous and consistent with a foramen and/or soft tissue. The patient's history and physical examination revealed no significant medical issues, and she was referred to a neuroradiologist for a second opinion. The diagnosis of an enlarged mastoid foramen was made and the patient was reassured.

  • Large-scale earthquakes pose serious threats to infrastructure causing substantial damage and large residual deformations. Superelastic (SE) Shape-Memory-Alloys (SMAs) are unique alloys with the ability to undergo large deformations, but can recover its original shape upon stress removal. The purpose of this research is to exploit this characteristic of SMAs such that concrete Beam-Column Joints (BCJs) reinforced with SMA bars at the plastic hinge region experience reduced residual deformation at the end of earthquakes. Another objective is to evaluate the seismic performance of SMA Reinforced Concrete BCJs repaired with flowable Structural-Repair-Concrete (SRC). A $\frac{3}{4}$-scale BCJ reinforced with SMA rebars in the plastic-hinge zone was tested under reversed cyclic loading, and subsequently repaired and retested. The joint was selected from an RC building located in the seismic region of western Canada. It was designed and detailed according to the NBCC 2005 and CSA A23.3-04 recommendations. The behaviour under reversed cyclic loading of the original and repaired joints, their load-storey drift, and energy dissipation ability were compared. The results demonstrate that SMA-RC BCJs are able to recover nearly all of their post-yield deformation, requiring a minimum amount of repair, even after a large earthquake, proving to be smart structural elements. It was also shown that the use of SRC to repair damaged BCJs can restore its full capacity.

  • Thirty-eight species in addition to 2 varieties (3 unidentified) of zoosporic organisms belonging to 14 genera of Oomycetes and 3 genera of Chytridiomycetes were recovered from 50 soil samples randomly collected from different localities in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Allomyces and Dictyuchus have the highest frequency of occurrence while Achlya, Aqualinderella, Saproleginia and Phytophthora were of moderate occurrence, The remaining genera were less frequent. Seven species and two varieties were new records to Saudi Arabia, which are Achlya oblongata, Allomyces javancius var. allomorphus, Aphanomyces stellatus, Blastoccladia gracile, Dictyuchus magnusii, Olpidiopsis Saproleginia var. levis, Olpidium species, Phytophthora megasperma, and Saproleginia turfosa. Water and organic matter contents of soil samples are considered as major factors influencing the prevalence and occurrence of zoosporic organisms.

  • Application of the simple buoyancy adjustment model, similar to Davey's (1983), indicates that buoyancies imposed locally or from outside of the basin are the major factor of the Japan Sea circulation. Within the context of the model considered, the relatively strong SW gradient of temperature, and corresponding western boundary current, in the SW region is due to the beta-effect. Kelvin waves make the western side colder and the eastern side warmer. Buoyancy input (presumably by fresh water discharge) in the NW region, so far neglected, plays an important role in strengthening the NKCC (North Korea Cold Current) and suppressing the EKWC (East Korea Warm Current) thereby breaking the conventional branching system of the Tsushima Warm Current.

  • The magnetoresistance (MR) properties of antiferromagnetic (AFM) IrMn based giant magnetoresistance-spin valve (GMR-SV) was investigated in view point of the artificial rotation effect of ferromagnetic (FM) layer in the plane induced by an applied field during the post annealing temperature. The MR curves measured with an azimuthal angle region of ${\phi}=0^{\circ}-360^{\circ}$ are depended on the annealing temperature and the magnetization easy axis of two free NiFe layers and two pinned NiFe layers in dual-type GMR-SV film. Especially, the annealing temperature and sample rotation angle(${\theta}$ ) maintained to the magnetic sensitivity (MS) of 1.4 %/Oe with an isotropic region angle of $110^{\circ}$ are $100^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • The variation of groundwater level in Jeju Island is analyzed with the data of precipitation observed from 48 monitoring post and groundwater level observed from 84 monitoring wells during 2001 to 2009. The groundwater level rises in summer and falls in winter. The rise of groundwater level by precipitation is fast and small in the eastern region and slow and large in the western region. However, the speed of fall during the period of no rain is slower in the eastern region than in the western region. It tells that permeability is greater in the eastern region than in the western region. In this paper, we set up the base level of groundwater and calculate recharge volume between the base level and groundwater surface. During the period, the average recharge volume was $9.83{\times}10^9m^3$ and the maximum recharge volume was $2.667{\times}10^{10}m^3$ after the typhoon Nari. With these volume and the recharge masses obtained by applying the recharge ratio of 46.1%, estimated by Jeju Province (2003), the porous ratio over the whole Jeju Island is 16.8% in average and 4.6% in the case of maximum recharge volume just after typhoon Nari. A large difference in the two ratios is because that it takes time for groundwater permeated through the ground just after rain fall to fill up the empty porous part. Although the porous ratios over the whole Jeju Island obtained in this way has a large error, they give us the advantage to roughly estimate the amount of recharged groundwater mass directly from observing the groundwater level.

  • To better understand the physics underlying the eruption of prominences in solar active regions, we studied eruption processes of two active prominences located in the active region NOAA 11261 using multi-wavelength observational data with high temporal and spatial resolution. Specifically, we examined (1) the temporal variation of morphology and plasma properties of the two active prominences, (2) magnetic fields and their evolution on the photospheric surface underneath the prominences, and (3) the time profiles and locations of radio, EUV, and soft/hard X-ray emissions produced by the M9.3 flare related to the prominence eruption. As a result, we found that: (1) a prominence F1 began to erupt and expand as the abrupt and intense EUV brightening occurred in the localized region underneath the western part of F1 at 03:45 UT prior to the peak time of the M9.3 flare, (2) F1 split into two parts: i.e., the western part asymmetrically erupted by producing the M9.3 flare with microwave source motions along the magnetic polarity inversion line between the two flare ribbons, while the eastern part coalesced into a pre-existing prominence F2, (3) F2 became unstable due to the coalescence with the eastern part of F1, and then it partially erupted with clockwise untwisting motions.
