  • To observe the behavior of lateral deformation of buried pipe and the preventing effect of embankment piles against the lateral deformation, a series of full-scale field tests were performed on a reclaimed coastal area. A buried pipe was installed in the west coast undergoing reclamation and embankment was performed by three steps. Then vertical settlement and lateral displacement were measured by the settlement plate and the inclinometer. Embankment pile system were applied to prevent the lateral displacement of buried pipe. Heave of the buried pipe slightly happens during embankment and following settlement. Finally the behavior steadily converged. The preventing effect of the embankment pile was approximately two times stronger than non-reinforcement. Both settlement and lateral displacement appear to be bigger at upper ground and smaller at lower ground.

  • Bedform data at 4 shallow zones in the Yellow Sea where waves as well as tidal range are high and bed material is relatively coarse were collected and analyzed here. Water depths in the study area where the bedform data were collected are 10 ~ 65 meters, and ripple lengths well developed are between 6 ~ 13 meters. Existing empirical formula for prediction of ripple length as for coexistence of waves and currents include Khelifa and Ouellet(2000) and Soulsby(2005), both of which have been based on laboratory measurements, or field measurements at different physical environment from the Yellow Sea with respect to tidal range, wave strength, and bed material. New scaling factors are proposed here for better prediction of the ripple length on coastal zone in the Yellow Sea.

  • We examined the effect of salt marsh vegetation on the benthic environment in macro-tidal flats at Donggeomdo, Ganghwa, on the west coast of Korea. Nine stations were established along a transect across the tidal flats, including salt marsh, and field sampling was conducted monthly from July 1997 to June 1998. During the study period, environmental parameters fluctuated as follows: salinity, 15.0 to 28.2 psu, exposure time, 613 to 702 hr/m, inundation time, 28 to 117 hr/m, sediment organic carbon, 0.71 to 1.34%, nitrogen, 0.07 to 0.16%, sulfur from 0.07 to 0.22%, mean grain size from 6.3 to $6.9{\phi}$, water content from 19.4 to 44.4%, water temperature from 4.4 to $20.4^{\circ}C$ and temperature of the surface sediments, 2.7 to $31.1^{\circ}C$, in total, seven halophyte species were sampled and found to be vertically distributed across the tidal levels. Carer scabrifolia, Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Phragmites communis dominated the upper zone of the salt marsh, Juncus haenkei, Triglochin maritimum and P. communis dominated the middle zone, and Suaeda japonica predominated in the lower area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling revealed that the zonation of halophytes was related to environmental variables such as salinity and exposure time. The halophyte communities were likely related to the organic content of the surface sediment.

  • The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of wastewater reuse for the vegetable farming. The study region, about 250 ha in size, is located on the west coast of Jejudo, Korea. Major agricultural products of the study area are the cabbage, broccoli, garlic and onion. To confirm the feasibility of wastewater reuse, the drought duration and the water requirement analysis were conducted respectively. The average annual precipitation of the study region (1,121 mm) was smaller than that of Jeju island (1,975 mm). The drought duration for a ten-year return period in October through November was more than 20 days. The water requirement for irrigation was calculated by the FAQ Penman-Monteith method which took into account the cultivated crops, planting system, and meteorological conditions of the study region. The water requirement for a ten-year return period was estimated 4.7 mm/day and the water demand for irrigation was $4,584\;m^3/day$. As a result, the irrigation water for the crops was insufficient during their breeding season, especially in October through November. Thus, the result indicated that the study region required the alternative water supply such as wastewater reuse during the non-rainy season. As drought continues to place considerable stress on the availability of fresh water supplies in the study region, irrigation with reclaimed wastewater will play an important role in helping to meet future water demands.

  • GOSAT satellite $CO_2$ signal in years (June, 2009-December 2012) were compared with ground-based measurement at Anmyeon-do Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAWC), located on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The result reveals that GOSAT signature is closely associated with ground-based measurement($R^2=0.49$). Strong correlation occurred between summer and fall ($R^2=0.62$) while weak relationship between satellite and ground-based measurement were identified in winter and spring ($R^2=0.37$). Average $CO_2$ concentration of GOSAT were 6.31 ppm lower than the corresponding values obtained from ground-based measurements on the same date. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference in introducing GOSAT to confirm data quality assurance for area-wide carbon monitoring process in relation to Anmyeon-do KGAWC $CO_2$ Concentration data.

  • Sand bars associated with strong tidal currents are well developed in the subtidal zone near the Kokunsan islands. Tidal currents measured at sand bar in the area show an asymmetry in magnitude between flood and ebb currents. At the southern flank of the sand bar the currents are flood-dominant whereas the currents are ebb-dominant at the northern flank. The asymmetry is more distinctive as the currents become stronger during spring tide. Moreover, the flood-dominance along the southern flank is stronger than the ebb-dominance along the northern flank. Thus the flood current is more affective to the sand bar. The sandy bottom sediment is mostly transported as bedload by the tidal currents. The magnitude asymmetry of the tidal currents results in a net sediment movement in one direction. The direction is onshore in the south and offshore in the north, which may result in a net counterlookwise rotation of the sands around the sand bar. However, the sand bar may migrate towards onshore due to the more affective flood current in the south. The irregular V-shaped outline of the sand bar in the south also seem to reflect the strong effect of flood current.

  • A high-resolution seismic survey was conducted on the abandoned tidal flat in Shihwa Lake on the west coast of Korea. A portable vibrator was used as a seismic source and 217 shot gathers with 48-channel system were acquired. F-k filtering, residual static corrections and post-stack frequency filtering are found to be useful for signal enhancement. The overburden is divided into two seismic depositional units. Unit I is deposited in tidal environment characterized by parallel and high continuity reflection pattern. This unit comprises a dry layer (Unit Ia) and a wet layer (Unit Ib) having averagely 5 and 15 meters thick, respectively. Unit II unconformably overlain by Unit I exhibits discontinuity and hummocky reflection pattern, indicating complex channel-fill sediments in estuary. The maximum thickness of this unit is approximately 20 meter. Acoustic basement is considered as Precambrian granitic gneiss occurred in the surrounding area.

  • This study includes a review of the relevant literature and data on the Gyeolseong Eupseong, a coastal castle town of the Joseon Period. During the process of building the Gyeolseong Eupseong, Eupchi(administrative office) was transferred to several different locations for the following reasons:. first, to strengthen defensive capabilities by utilizing the locational advantages of the Seokdang Mountain Fortress, second, to secure sufficient space for holding the castle and have access to water in times of emergencies, third, to strengthen coastal defence by utilizing geographical advantages. Most of the Gyeolseong Eupseong was damaged during the Japanese colonial period. At present, there remain only part of the castle's facilities and some facilities that were restored later in modern times; 4 building sites have been identified. Remaining and destructed buildings can be identified through old maps(the local maps of 1872) and Zirizi and Eupzi(geography books). Also identified were 2 castle gate sites where a 1,500m-long stone castle wall and an ongseong(a crescent-shaped defensive structure), 5 chiseongs, and a most were constructed. The Gyeolseong area is assumed to have been a strategic foothold to defend the west coast from the days before the Three Kingdom Period. However it is very difficult to find any records created before the Joseon Period. Therefore, the time of the restoration of the Eupchi should be determined based on records created in the late Joseon Period. Finally, excavation work needs to be done to identify the locations of the castle's facilities.
