A Study on the Development Direction of Medical Tourism and Wellness Tourism Using Big Data

  • Since COVID-19, many foreign tourists have visited Korea for medical tourism. When statistical data were checked from 2022, after COVID-19, the number of foreign patients visiting Korea for two years was 24.8 million, an increase of 70.1% from 2020. It was confirmed that it has achieved a 50% level compared to 2019 (Statistics Office, 2023). Therefore, to create a development plan by linking medical tourism and wellness tourism, the purpose of this study is to find the link between medical tourism and wellness tourism as big data and present a development plan. In this research method, medical tourism, and wellness tourism for two years from 2022 to 2023 from the post-COVID period as big data are set as central keywords to compare text data to find common points. When analyzing wellness tourism and medical tourism, it was confirmed that most wellness tourism had a greater frequency than medical tourism. This confirmed that wellness tourism occupies a larger pie than medical tourism. As a result, when checking the word frequency, it was confirmed that wellness tourism and medical tourism share a lot as complex tourism products, and when checking 2-gram, to attract many medical tourists, it is necessary to combine medical tourism clusters and wellness tourism according to each other's characteristics among local governments.

경상남도 웰니스관광의 염증면역지표, 자율신경균형, 정서, 피로, 스트레스, 삶의 질 및 수면의 질 개선에 미치는 단기효과 (Short-term Effect of Gyeongsangnam-do Wellness Tourism on Inflammatory and Immune System Markers, Emotion, Fatigue, Stress, Quality of Life, and Quality of Sleep)

  • Purpose : Recently, there has been a growing social interest in aging well. Consequently, wellness tourism has begun to attract attention. However, no studies on whether wellness tourism has any objective health benefits have been carried out yet. In this study, we assess the health benefits as well as the degree of improvement in health of a wellness tourism program. Methods : The study involved 30 adults over the age of 19 who live in the Gyeongsangnam-do region. Participants were evaluated on health indicator before and after participating in wellness tourism program. Participants took heart rate variability (HRV) test, and LFT, RFT, CBC, FBS HbA1C, and CRP test were conducted before and after the tour. Additionally, a survey was conducted before and after the program, and participant satisfaction was evaluated. Statistical differences in the tests conducted before and after the program were analyzed using a design t-test, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and McNemar's test. Results : The study showed that participants were very satisfied with and had significant health improvements after the wellness tourism program. The program was also found to be beneficial in improving participants' emotions as follows: BDI (p<.001), fatigue recovery (p=.006), stress relief (p=.003), improved quality of life (p<.05), and improved sleep quality (p<.001). Conclusion : Wellness tourism programs are specifically beneficial for improving participants' emotions (depression, anxiety), fatigue, stress levels, quality of life, and sleep. Therefore, they are beneficial to the overall health. Further research in the future by way of a follow-up study on the long-term effects on health after short-term interventions will provide more validation data.

강원도형 치유관광의 과제 및 웰니스 상품화 방안 (The Commercialization Ways of Wellness Tourism and the Problems of Healing Tourism in Gangwon Province Model)

  • 최근 웰니스 문화 및 치유관광에 대한 사회적 수요가 증대되고 있는 가운데 문헌조사 및 사례연구를 통해 치유관광 목적지로서 강원도의 치유관광 여건을 검토하고, 강원도형 치유관광의 발전 과제 및 웰니스 관점의 상품화 방안을 고찰하였다. 조사 결과, 강원 영동권은 자연적 자원을 기반으로 한 우수한 치유기반 여건을 지니고 있는 것으로 파악되었으나, 지자체 간에 치유관광사업의 개발 컨텐츠나 사업 아이템이 중복되거나 계획단계에 머무르고 있어 중복투자를 방지하고 서로 연계하여 시너지 효과를 창출할 수 있도록 유기적인 협력이 요구되는 것으로 조사되었다. 주 사례지로 검토한 고성군의 경우, 실버치유관광으로서의 잠재력이 높은 것으로 분석되었으며, 지역의 특화된 자원과 연계한 테라피 프로그램을 중심으로 치유관광 대상별 웰니스 상품화 전략을 모색하고 강원 영동권의 지역별 강점을 효과적으로 연계 특화시켜 나간다면 실버 및 건강지향형 관광객을 타겟으로 하는 웰니스 관광상품 개발 운영의 지역적 성공 사례로 자리매김 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
