Comparison of Meaning in Life and Death Attitude between Participants and Non-participants in Well-dying Education (죽음준비교육 참여군과 비 참여군의 삶의 의미 및 죽음에 대한 태도 비교)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study was to compare the meaning in life and death attitude between the participants and nonparticipants of the well-dying education program. Methods: This study adopted the descriptive comparative design. Data were collected by interviewing 85 participants and 94 non-participants of well-dying education. The instruments used for this study were a self-report questionnaire. Results: There were significant differences in age, gender, marital status, health status, and volunteer experience. The program participants showed higher scores in the death attitude than non-participants. There were significant correlations between meaning in life and death attitude in participant group. Death attitude was significantly associated with meaning in life in participant group with 6.0% variance. Conclusion: Based on the results, well-dying education program was effective to prepare good death with more comprehensive vision. Therefore, this program should be served for patient with life-threatening illness by nurse and this is the expended role of oncology and hospice palliative nurses.

A Study on the Subjectivity of Koreans about Well Dying - Q Methodological Approach - (웰다잉에 관한 한국인의 주관성 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the subjectivity of Koreans about well-dying by dividing the cognition and attitudes of Koreans about well-dying into five types and analyzing and interpreting each type. Method: Q-methodology, which is effective in scientifically measuring individual subjectivity, was used. The result of the Q-shorting of the 34 Q-statements by 42 participants was analyzed with the PQM program. Result: Five cognitive types of the subjectivity about well-dying were identified and labeled as follows. Type I: Individual and preparation for the other world. Type II: Receptive to nature and fate. Type III: Oriental and family centered. Type IV: Realistic and self-independent. Type V: Altruistic and preparing for the other world. Conclusions: This study generally show that traditional family connections and blood relationship are declining, and western rationalism and the pursuit of the positive meaning of well-dying are beginning to be accepted in the cognition of modern Koreans.

The Effect of Health Behavior, Resilience, and Recognition of Well-dying on the Depression of Elderly with Chronic Disease (건강행위, 회복탄력성, 웰다잉 인식이 노인 만성질환자의 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of health behavior, resilience an recognition of well-dying on the depression of elderly with chronic disease. It was the survey period was from February 13 to March 20, 2015 with 185 people. For data analysis, SPSS 20.0 program was used. As a result, the mean level of health behavior was 2.60, the mean level of resilience was 3.14, recognition of well-dying was 3.41, the mean level of depression was 3.29. Depression was showed a negative corelation with health behavior and recognition of well-dying. Factors that affect depression was health behavior, subjective health status, recognition of well-dying, live with and sex. Also, strange cause of these was 44.8% of depression. Results suggest that, to mediate melancholy elderly, it is necessary to develop a program in consideration of various factors.

Effects of a Well-dying Program on Nursing Students (간호대학생에 대한 웰다잉 교육프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: We examined the effects of a well-dying program on nursing students in terms of death preparation, death recognition and perception of well-dying perception. Methods: The design of this study was quasi-experimental and non-synchronized with a non-equivalent control group. The study was conducted with nursing students: 32 in the experimental group and 36 in the control group. The well-dying program was consisted of five sessions: introduction, thinking about meaning of death, organizing things to do before dying, looking back on my life, and leaving a trail of my life. Descriptive analysis, t-test, ${\chi}^2$ test and ANCOVA were used with SPSS 18.0 program to analyze the data. Results: After attending the program, a difference was observed in death preparation of the experimental group (t=2.61, P=0.014). The death recognition (F=154.15, P<0.001) score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group. There was no significant difference between the groups in perception of well-dying (F=0.11, P=0.747). Conclusions: The well-dying program helped nursing students build positive death recognition. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to development of a death education program for nursing students.

  • This study, two-group pretest-posttest design was to provide the well-dying program for aged and college students and to determine the effects on death anxiety, perception of good death, and readiness for death. The subjects were 14 aged and 9 college students by providing a 12 hour well-dying program, verified its effectiveness. Data collection was from October 1 to December 31, 2018 and were analyzed using IBM SPSS 24.0. To verify the normality of the research variable in two groups, Shapiro-Wilk was used. Tested by Fisher's exact probability test, independent sample t-test, and Mann-Whitney test to verify the homogeneity of general characteristics of the subjects. Repeated Measure ANOVA, Friedman test to verify the continuity of the program effects on two group respectively. Results, death anxiety and perception of good death among the aged and college students showed no significant interaction between time and group, but there was a significant difference according to time((p<.030). Readiness for death was significant interaction between time and group((p=.030), a significant difference between the groups(p=.003). The well-dying program of this study is helps raise the death anxiety and perception of good death of the subject, especially the program which helps the readiness for death of the aged.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the subjectivity of undergraduate students about well-dying. Method: Q-methodology, which is effective in scientifically measuring individual subjectivity, was used. The result of the Q-short of the 34 Q-statements by 42 participants was analyzed using the PQM program. Result: Four cognitive types of subjectivity about well-dying were identified and labeled as follows. Type 1: oriental and family-centered type, Type 2: Individual and fate-adapted type, Type 3: altruistic and afterlife-centered type, Type 4: self-leading and secularistic type. Conclusions: Undergraduate students have a well-dying concept which tends to be self-centered and secularistic. At the same times, they also have a well-dying concept which has a basically oriental view, that is, family-centered and fate-adapted views.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the recognition of well-dying, change to attitude toward the old and meaning of life through pre/post hospice education program of care worker trainees. This study is a quasi-experimental research using one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of the study were 80 care worker trainees in T city and S city. The data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. considering these results, The recognition of well-dying, The attitude toward the old and meaning of life were significantly different between pre/post program. This study is need systematic and continuousness of hospice education program for curriculum change to attitude toward the old and improvement of care worker.

A Study on How Elderly People are Preparing for Dying Well (웰다잉을 어떻게 준비하고 있는가: 노인을 대상으로)

  • This study was a qualitative study that attempted to find out the meaning of preparation for dying well that the elderly think through a question of how to prepare for dying well. The focus group interview was conducted on 10 elderly people aged 65 or older who visited the elderly welfare center in B city, Gyeonggi-do, and a total of two groups were interviewed with five subjects as one group. As a result, eight themes were drawn from four dimensions of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. In physical preparation, 'health management' and 'doing what you want to do' were derived. In psychological preparation, 'not regretting' and 'giving to others' were derived, and in social preparation, 'organizing property', 'determining a place of death you wish', and 'writing a letter of advance life sustaining care directives' were derived. In spiritual preparation, 'relying on religion' was derived. The elderly were preparing for well-being in various aspects, and when developing a program for well-being, the program should be planned to prepare for actual death in various aspects.

Effects of Perception of Death, Well-Dying, on Terminal Care Attitude among Nursing Students (간호 대학생의 죽음인식과 웰다잉이 임종간호태도에 미치는 영향)

  • In today's society interest in beautiful death is rising. This study investigated the perception of death and well-dying-terminal care attitude-of nursing students and determined the factors that influence their attitude on terminal care and beautiful death. Data was collected from 319 baccalaureate nursing students in S-City, Kyunggido, in Korea using a self-reported questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Person's correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise regression, using WIN SPSS 18.0 program. There were significant differences in terminal care attitude of subjects in accordance with the experience of hospice education (F=2.53, p=.012), experience with the death of close acquaintances (F=3.37, p=.001), and perceived health status (F=5.37 p=.005). There was a positive correlation between perception of death and well-dying (r=.23, p<.001), and the relationship between well-dying and terminal care attitudes was also statistically significant (r=.22, p<.001). Factors that influence the attitude on terminal care were well-dying (${\beta}=.19$) and experience with the death of close acquaintances (${\beta}=.16$). It is necessary to develop an education program for nursing students to promote positive attitudes toward the perception of death and well-dying, as well as toward terminal care.

A Comparison of Awareness to Well-dying, Knowledge and Attitudes toward Advance Directives of Nursing Students according to Terminal care Experience (환자의 임종간호 관찰경험에 따른 간호대학생의 웰다잉에 대한 인식과 사전연명의료의향서 지식 및 태도 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between the awareness of well-dying, advance directives knowledge and attitude, according to patient's terminal care experience among nursing students. Participants were 321 nursing students, selected from 3 universities located in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do, Jeolla-do and data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program, with descriptive statistics x2-test, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson's correlation coefficient. There was a significant difference in advance directives attitude among nursing students with experience of patient's terminal care or no experience of patient's terminal care (t=3.011, p<.003). In addition, the awareness of well-dying (r=.194, p=.008) and advance directives knowledge (r=.201, p=.006) were positively correlated with advance directives attitude in nursing students with experience of patient's terminal care, whereas advance directives attitude was positively correlated with the awareness of well-dying (r=.189, p=.029) in nursing students with no experience of patient's terminal care. This study suggests that there is a need for the development of systematic education programs to improve a positive attitude toward advance directives and awareness of well-dying of nursing college students.
