  • Metal Transfer in gas metal arc (GMA) welding is a complex phenomenon affected by many parameters of the welding conditions and material properties. In this research, the correlation equation between the welding condition and detaching droplet size and detaching velocity in GMA welding was studied via recession analysis on the results of numerical analysis using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. Welding parameters and material properties were grouped into three dimensionless numbers and detaching droplet size was expressed as the function of them. Second order and exponential multi-variable correlation forms were assumed, and the coefficients of these equations were calculated for globular and spray modes as well as entire transfer modes. Applying correlation equation into available experimental data, it shows good agreement.

  • Laser welding is obviously an attractive method to join small, thin parts such as small stainless steel tubes, but it is very sensitive to the joint clearance and tolerance, and this makes laser welding difficult to obtain consistent welding qualities over time. Recently, Plasma Augmented Laser Welding(PALW) is being developed to solve these problems. In this study, plasma arc welding(PAW) was introduced to join conventional V-grooved butt joint of thin stainless steel strips using single laser heat source in manufacturing small stainless steel tubes. The effect of the welding speed enhancement is investigated by the experiments. Effects of welding directions, distance between the heat sources and intensity of arc heat source on the optimal welding speed was investigated. Through this research, it was confirmed that PALW process has higher welding speed and robustness than laser welding process.

  • Friction welding is welding method to use frictional heat of two material. A defect of friction welding is that create flash. The flash is part that must have cut after welding finished. But the welding part with flow gallery by friction welding can't cut flash. Therefore the welding part with flow gallery was designed with no effect in flow. In this research, decide the welding shape parameter of welding part with flow gallery and do friction welding analysis. In friction welding analysis, must input necessary S-S curve, friction coefficient by temperature change, upset pressure, RPM etc. According to analysis result, decided the optimal shape of welding part with no effect in flow.

  • In this paper, a practical design criteria for judgement of crack occurrence in weldments is presented as a function of typical welding parameters, such as diffusible hydrogen, restraint intensity, and preheating temperature. The elastic analyses using the finite element techniques are employed in order to quantify the restraint intensities, numerically. Systematic experiments are also conducted in order to investigate the propensity of crack to typical welding parameters. The results of numerical estimation using the proposed method for the experimental specimens show the usefulness as a practical tool in welding induced crack problems with extensive uncertainties. • The welding residual stress has on important effect on welding deformation, fatigue fracture, buckling strength, brittle fracture, etc. For the purpose of relaxation of welding residual stress, post welding heat treatment is widely used. In this paper, residual stresses were calculated by two dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. Heat transfer analysis are performed by transient analysis. Also structure analysis are carried out by of thermal-mechanical coupled analysis. Numerical analysis are used by ANSYS 5.7.

  • Positioning the workpiece accurately and preventing the weld distortion, tack welding is often performed before main welding in the construction of welded structures. The weld bead size of the tack weld is determined according to the workpiece thickness, weld length, weld joint type etc. However, this tack weld deteriorates the final weld bead profile, so that the grinding process is usually adopted for the uniform weld bead profile. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld. This method uses the response surface analysis in which the leg length and the reinforcement height of weld bead were chosen as the quality variables of weld bead profile. The overall desirability function, which was combined desirability function for the two quality variables, was used as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. From the result, it was revealed that a uniform weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis method for predicting welding-induced deformation and buckling in ship block with thin plates. The numerical method is particularized on evaluating buckling distortion induced by welding. There are two steps in the numerical analysis model. One is to solve the eigenvalue problem of welded structure by elastic buckling analysis, and the other is to solve the welding-induced buckling distortion of welded structure by post-mechanical analysis. Equivalent force method was used for considering the shrinkage force by welding in the analysis model.

  • In this paper crack propagation analyses in the dissimilar metal weldment of a nozzle were performed using a finite element alternating method (FEAM). A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element nozzle model was prepared and welding simulation including the thermal heat transfer analysis and the thermal stress analysis was performed. Initial cracks were inserted at weld and heat affected zone in the finite element model which has welding residual stress distribution obtained from the welding simulation. To calculate crack propagation trajectories of these cracks, a new fatigue crack evaluation module was developed in addition to the previous FEAM program. With the new FEAM fatigue crack evaluation module, crack propagation trajectory and crack growth time were calculated automatically and effectively.

  • For three-dimensional finite element welding residual stress simulation, several methods are available. Two widely used methods are the moving heat source model using heat flux and the temperature boundary condition model using the temperature profile of the welded beads. However, each model has pros and cons in terms of calculation times and difficulties in determining welding parameters. In this paper, a new method using the moving temperature profile model is proposed to perform efficiently 3-D FE welding residual stress analysis for large structures. Comparison with existing experimental residual stress measurement data of two-pass welding pipe and SNL(Sandia National Laboratories) mock-up canister shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this study, a series of fatigue tests are carried out in order to estimate quantitatively the characteristics of fatigue crack growth rate for high strength steels of SM570, POSTEN60, and POSTEN80 steel, that is, the influence on fatigue crack growth rate according to the welding line, the characteristics of fatigue crack growth according to the welding method and the kinds of steel, and the characteristics of fatigue crack growth for base metal, heat affected zone and weld metal. From the test results, in case that the notch if parallel to welding line, it knows that the retardations of fatigue crack growth rate in crack tip at early stage increase remarkably than in case that the notch is perpendicular to welding line due to compressive residual stress. And the characteristics of fatigue crack growth rate according to welding method are that the dispersion of fatigue crack growth rate in case of FCAW method is smaller than that of SAW method. Also, it knows that the fatigue crack growth rate converges in high stress intensity factor range.
