Numerical prediction of welding-induced residual stresses using the finite element method has been a common practice in the development or refinement of welded product designs. Various researchers have studied several thermal models associated with the welding process. Among these thermal models, ramp heat input and double-ellipsoid moving source have been investigated. These heat-source models predict the temperature fields and history with or without accuracy. However, these models can predict the thermal characteristics of the welding process that influence the formation of the inherent plastic strains, which ultimately determines the final state of residual stresses in the weldment. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses are compared. Although the two models predict similar magnitude of the longitudinal stress, the double-ellipsoid moving source model predicts wider tensile stress zones than the other one. And, both the ramp heating and moving source models predict the stress results in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.
Some structural members of large-scale marine vessels such as large-scale offshore structures and very large container ships are assembled by very thick plates of which thickness exceeds 60mm. Also, high-tensile steels have been selected to meet the required structural strength and fatigue strength. Generally, multi-pass welding method such as FCA(Flux-Core Arc) welding has been used to join the thick plates. Considering the welding residual stresses, fatigue strength of the welded joints of thick plates should be assured since the residual stress influences the fatigue strength. This paper presents a numerical procedure to investigate the residual stress of structure joined by multi-pass FCA welding so that it can be incorporated into the fatigue strength assessment considering the effect of welding residual stress. The residual stress distribution is also measured by X-Ray diffraction method. The residual stress obtained by the computational model also has been compared with that of experiment. The results of FEA are in very good agreement with the experimental measurements.
In the welding process, weldments usually include repair weld during the manufacturing process. Repair welds is supposed to cause strong tensile residual stress. Moreover weldments, usually made by Alloy 82/182, is susceptible to PWSCC. Therefore, mitigation of welding residual stress in weldments is important for reliable operating. PWOL is one of the methods for mitigation and verified for over twenty years. In this paper, residual stress distribution of repaired weldments and the effect of PWOL on mitigation is examined for surge nozzle.
In manufacturing of pipe walls for boiler units, distortion can result in pipe-web-pipe joints from the nonuniform expansion and contraction of the weld metal and the adjacent base metal during heating and cooling cycle of the welding process. In this study, the stresses and strains during longitudinal welding of the plate-to-pipe joint were investigated. Using the method of successive elastic solution, longitudinal stresses and strains during and after welding were calculated from the information of temperature distributions obtained by Rosenthal's equations. In order to confirm the validity of the numerical results, the temperature and residual stress distributions were measured and compared with the calculated results. In spite of some assumptions, the one-dimensional analytical results of residual stresses were in fairly good agreement with the experimental ones. The residual stresses due to welding of plate-to-pipe joints are tensile near the weld line and compressive in the base metal as in the welding of plates. the amount and distribution of residual stresses were deeply dependent on the heat input ratio of the plate and pipe.
In order to study the distribution of welding residual stress through the plate thickness. experiment and analysis of fillet welding details were carried out. Especially, a residual stress in the weld root part of T-joint fillet weld whose measurement was difficult up to now was measured. By using the heat input and the number of the weld layers as parameters, the distribution of the 3-dimensional residual stress was investigated. As a result, we can say that with increasing the heat input, the residual stress in the weld toe and weld root barely changes. But, the area of the tensile residual stress became wide. Then, comparing a single pass with multi-pass weld method, it was found that the residual stress decreased more in multi-pass than in single pass. Moreover, it was found the thing that the area of tensile residual stress by multi-pass is lower than that by single-pass in the near weld part.

In this paper, the effects of parameters related to the residual stress induced due to laser shock peening process to determine mitigation of the initial tensile residual stresses are discussed, such as the maximum pressure, pressure pulse duration, laser spot size and number of laser shots. In order to estimate the influence of the initial tensile residual stresses, which is generated by welding in 35CD4 50HRC steel alloy, the initial condition option was employed in the finite element code. It is found that $2{\times}HEL$ maximum pressure and a certain range of the pressure pulse duration time can produce maximum mitigation effects near the surface and depth, regardless of the magnitudes of tensile residual stess. But plastically affected depth increase with increasing maximum pressure and pressure pulse duration time. For the laser spot size, maximum compressive residual stresses have almost constant values. But LSP is more effective with increasing the magnitudes of tensile residual stress. For the multiple LSP, magnitudes of compressive residual stresses and plastically affected depths are found to increase with increasing number of laser shots, but the effect is less pronounced for more laser shots. And to conclude, even though the initial tensile residual stresses such as weld residual stress field are existed, LSP is enough to make the surface and depth reinforcement effects.
The plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical properties of the plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings were examined in this study. The distribution of the residual stress with the coating thickness was also examined by X-ray diffraction method. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types ; one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occurred at the interface of top coat and substrate or top coat and bond coat depending on the existence of bond coat. It was found that the compressive residual stress near the interface decreased with the increase of the top coat thickness. The tensile adhesion strength of the coating without bond coat was higher than that with bond coat, because the coating with bond coat has higher horizontal crack density near the interface between bond coat and top coat.

This study investigates the crack propagation behavior to examine the effect of welding residual stress by the superposition method. Especially, as the crack propagation behavior is affected by the applied stress and the stress ratio in compressive residual stress filed, it is studied for three cases as follows; (1) $K_{min}$is smaller than l $K_{r}$l, (2) $K_{min}$ is smaller than l $K_{r}$l in the later stage, (3) $K_{min}$is lager than l $K_{r}$l. The resuslts show that the superposition method is very useful in all the three cases of compressive residual stress field, but is inappropriate in predicting the crack propagation behavior in tensile residual stress field.field.field.
Residual stress is generated in the structures as a result of irregular elastic-plastic deformation during fabrication processes such as welding, heat treatment, and mechanical processing. There are several factors attributed to the origin of residual stresses, tensile or compressive. The stresses can be determined by destructive ways or nondestructive ways using X-ray or neutron diffraction. Although X-ray diffraction is a well established technique, it is practically limited to near-surface stresses. Neutrons penetrate easily into most materials and neutron diffraction permits non-destructive evaluation of lattice strain within the bulk of large specimens because the radiation is more deeply penetrating for metallic engineering components. This paper presented application of neutron diffraction technique to the residual stress measurement using 20 mm thick welded stainless steel plate($100{\times}100 \textrm{mm}^2$)

A machine frame has been manufactured by casting. However, due to the development of the industrial society, 3-D duties was refused. Especially, the declination of the casting industry makes it difficult to produce the frame. Many companies still manufacture the small casting products. The large casting products are extremely limited and manufactured for their own use. Therefore, it is difficult to keep the term of order. In this study, the characteristics of steel structure which is produced by welding were identified in the view of mechanical strength of steel structure which is produced by welding were identified in the view of mechanical strength to substitute steel structure for casting frame. But welding structure has the residual stress, HAZ and welding deformation. Residual stress and HAZ especially cause crack growth. The proposed steel structure, based on the simulation and experiment(tensile curve and S-N curve), can reduce not only the producting term but also the weight of the frame.
