  • The welding distortion can result in problems such as dimensional inaccuracies during assembly and raise concerns on safety during service. Therefore, an accurate prediction and a reduction of the deformation are critical to improving the quality of the weldment. In this study, four cases for reducing welding distortion is proposed and it is evaluated through experiments.

  • Distortion is a potential problem with all welded fabrication and should be caused dimensional changes and mismatch of joints during welding fabrication. Correction unacceptable weld distortion is extremely costly and in some case impossible. The aim of the present work is to verify the variation of the compressive force, tensile force and distortion during plastic deformation under Tungsten-inert-gas(TIG) welding, on type 304 stainless steel. Experimental results show that possibili-ty if measuring deformation during welding and good correlation was found between analytical and experimental result ad finite element methods have been used to model temperature analysis.

  • Geometric variation including welding distortion accumulates as many parts are joined together, ultimately affecting the final product. This variation is then subjected to correction, which requires considerable effort, time, and cost. This variation can be categorized as in-plane/out-of-plane variation. To date, studies on variation simulation have largely focused on the out-of-plane variation, however the variation generated in the in-plane direction requires more time and efforts to correct afterwards. This research aims to construct a variation simulation model considering both the in-plane and out-of-plane variations. A geometric analysis was performed to derive an equation that reflects the coupling effect of the out-of-plane variation on the in-plane variation. The proposed model is validated with case study analysis and the results shows that good fidelity in predicting and diagnosing the in-plane variation during the block assembly process considering welding distortion.

  • There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the welding distortion at the channel I butt SA weldment. In order to do it, the heat input model for the weldment was defined as combined heat source with the surface heat flux of gaussian mode and volume heat source uniformly distributed within weld groove on the basis of comparing the shapes of molten pool and temperature distribution obtained by FEA and experiment. The arc efficiency of SA welding for 2 dimensional FE analysis was determined as 0.85. The results of welding distortions at the weldment obtained by FEA and heat input conditions proposed have a good agreement with those obtained by experiment. Based on the results, it was suggested that the proper heat input model should be required to evaluate the welding distortion for weldment.

  • The problems of welding distortion in a welded structures are major concern in heavy industry. Weld-induced angular distortion's formula, composed weld parameter such as heat input and plate thickness, is developed analytically by the use of an elliptic cylindrical inclusion with an eigenstrain in an infinite laminated plate theory. The source of angular distortion in weldments is the plastic strains, which are caused by non-uniform temperature gradient. The distributions of the plastic strain corresponding eigenstrain are assumed by the use of Rosenthal's solution expressing thermal history. Comparison of calculated results with experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the simplified welding distortion analysis method to predict the welding deformation of both plate and stiffener in fillet welds. Currently, the methods based on equivalent thermal strain like Strain as Direct Boundary (SDB) has been widely used due to effective prediction of welding deformation. Regarding the fillet welding, however, those methods cannot represent deformation of both members at once since the temperature degree of freedom is shared at the intersection nodes in both members. In this paper, we propose new approach to simulate deformation of both members. The method can simulate fillet weld deformations by employing composite shell element and using different thermal expansion coefficients according to thickness direction with fixed temperature at intersection nodes. For verification purpose, we compare of result from experiments, 3D thermo elastic plastic analysis, SDB method and proposed method. Compared of experiments results, the proposed method can effectively predict welding deformation for fillet welds.

  • Reduction of weld distortions and increase in productivity are some of the major goals of the shipbuilding industry. To address these issues, many researchers have attempted to apply new welding processes. In the shipbuilding industry, steel is the candidate material of choice owing to its good weldability. However, conventional welding techniques are not feasible for avoiding welding problems. Tip-rotating arc welding is one of the high-efficiency welding process that has several advantages, such as high welding speed, high melting rate, low heat input, and less distortion. The present study investigates the influence of the welding variables on the weld characteristics of tip-rotating arc welding. Welding was performed using EH36 as the base metal and SM-70s as the filler metal, which are widely used in shipbuilding. Basic experiments were conducted to understand the effects of the major welding variables, such as welding and tip-rotating speeds. The distortion and mechanical properties of the optimal welding conditions were used to evaluate the tip-rotating arc welding performance. Consequently, the feasibility of the tip-rotating arc welding process for joining steel components was investigated, so that the optimized welding conditions could be applied directly to ship body welding to enhance the quality of the welded joints.

  • In carrying out the elastic-plastic analysis, four conditions (equilibrium equation, constitutive equation, condition of compatibility and yield condition) should be satisfied. In welding, the temperature largely changed from a melting temperature to a room temperature. So, yield stress of materials largely changed, too. In particular, yield stress becomes about zero over $700^{\circ}C$. The analysis should be carried out under the condition that equivalent stress generated in temperature increment ${\Delta}T$ did not exceed yield stress of materials at high temperature over $700^{\circ}C$. It should be sufficiently recognized that the obtained results were not reliable if this condition was not satisfied.

  • The friction stir welding technique is a derivative of conventional friction welding, which enables the advantages of solid-phase welding to be applied to the fabrication of long butt and lap joints, with very little postweld distortion. Friction stir welding is a remarkable new welding technique for joining aluminum alloys and has the potential for welding other ferrous materials. It has already been developed beyond a laboratory curiosity and has been proved as a potential practical welding technique offering low-distortion, high-quality, low-cost welds from simple concept machine tool welding equipment. To bring this remarkable method of welding aluminum alloys to the attention of Industry, this article introduces the basic principle of friction stir welding, pointing out the practical advantages and most important of all, describes the exceptionally good metallurgical and mechanical properties.
