  • The bead shape in high frequency electric resistance (HER) pipe welding gives important information ons judging current welding state. In most manufacturing process, the heat input is controlled by skilled operators observing color and bead shape. We proposed the bead shape monitoring system in HERW pipe process by using structured light beam. We reconstructs 3-D shape of bead from the measured data, and compare this shape with real 3-D shape obtained by coordinate-measuring machine. This experiment results show that the proposed system can monitor the bead shape with good accuracy.

  • The residual stress is inevitably introduced into composites because of the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion, and it is different in each phase. The X-ray technique can detect separately the stress in each phase, so will wield useful information for analyzing the toughening mechanisms of composites. In order to apply the law of mixture to alloy steels with composite microstructures, two phase stainless steel, consisted of ferrite (.alpha.-Fe) and austenite (.gamma.-Fe) structures, was selected. The tensile elastic deformation was loaded, and then the X-ray diffraction technique was used to measure the X-ray elastic constants, the X-ray stress constants and the phase stresses. The law of mixture was investigated and the separation of macrostress and microstress was carried out. The phase stresses (the residual stresses of phase) in each phase, which were measured by X-ray technique, was directly proportional to the applied stress. The macrostress calculated from the phase stresses by using the law of mixture was nearly equal to the applied stress.

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds of structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet and plug type joint, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of gas welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. Thus, in this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the. ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the hot spot stresses at the gas welded joints.

  • This paper discusses the application of infra-red thermography in monitoring the robotic arc welding process, and it's potential for weld bead dimension and seam tracking control. Thermal images illustrating weld pool formation dynamics and heat distribution phenomena are digitized and their characteristics are measured. At each sampling point the maximum depth of penetration is recorded together with additional information regarding weld bead placement in relation to the seam location. Deficiencies such as incomplete penetration and lack of side wall fusion are readily identified and can be remained during the process. The technique can help an increase in productivity and weld quality by minimizing the amount of post process rework and inspection efforts needed otherwise.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the GMAW system are simulated using the short-circuit transfer model and the characteristic equations fir the power supply, wire system and arc. The conventional wire equation, which relates the rate change of the wire extension to the wire feed rate and melting rate, is modified to include effects of the molten drop attached at the wire tip. The modified wire equation describes behaviors of the GMAW system more precisely and provides information about the initial bridge volume for short-circuit transfer. The proposed short-circuit model predicts the variation of parameters such as the current, voltage, short-circuit frequency and time considering the effects of the surface tension and electromagnetic force due to current. The calculated results are in broad agreements with the experimental results under the argon shielding condition.

  • Line-laser beams are used for depth measurement of welding beads along the circumference of a pipe. For this, first we project a line-laser beam on an rotating pipe and take a sequence of images of the beam projected on the pipe using a CCD camera. Second, the projected line laser beam in each image is detected, converted into a thin curve. Finally measure the distance between the thinned curve and an imaginary line. When a line-laser beam is projected to a rough metal surface such as arc welding beads, the beam is severely scattered. This severe scattering makes the thinned curve perturbed. In this paper, we propose a thinning method robust against scattering of line lasers. First, we extract a projected line laser beam region using an adaptive threshold. Second, we model a thinned curve with a spline curve with control points. Next, we adjust the control points to fit the curve to the projected line-laser beam. Finally, we take a weighted mean of thin curves on a sequence of image frames. Experiments shows that the proposed thinning method results in a thinning curve, which is smooth and fit to the projected line-laser beam with small error.

  • There are many types of seam tracking methods actually used in industrial spot. Lately, Non-contact sensor technics are mostly used because non-contact sensor has more advantage than contact sensor in many parts. This paper also concerned about fiber sensor a kind of non-contact sensor. X-Y robot and fiber sensor scan the seam tracking to be weld. After scanning, X-Y robot moves the first working point of being scanned and welding starts automatically. It makes an experiment on some types of Seam tracking like straight line tracking, leaned line tracking and curved line tracking to confirm how well the fibers sensor tracks the seam pass to be weld. And the seam pass that had been tracked was welded by inverter CO2 welding machine.

  • Ultrasonic signals transmitted through adhesively bonded plates were used to evaluate parameters related to attenuation and frequency in the adhesively bonded joint. The kinds of bonding materials with a different bonding thickness of constant pressure were used. And ultrasonic diagnosis was evaluated by p-wave sensor of 10MHz. FFT has been performed to determine bond-layer parameters such as effective thickness and frequency for adhesively bonded joint of A16061 plates in comparison with measured to theoretical ratios. When variable thickness exists, the ultrasonic spectrum was changed the frequency wave. The more materials thickness and the higher the frequency, the larger shift was observed. Measured ratios for cases of bond thickness and variety bonding materials are then used to determine bond parameters. The results show that the technique can be applied to the characterization of adhesively bonded joint.

  • In automobile industry, it is necessary to reduce the weight from the view point of energy and environmental problems in these days. One of the ways for weight reduction is using adhesive aluminum structures. In this study, ultrasonic signals reflected from the adhesively bonded joint layer are used to evaluate the adhesively bonded joints. FFT is performed to determine bond-layer parameters such as effective thickness and frequency for adhesively bonded joint Al 6061 plates in comparison with the measured and theoretical ratios. And the parameters of ultrasonic wave and the J-integral are investigated to evaluate the adhesively bonded joint strength by DCB specimens.

  • In this paper, a non-contact method of evaluating the thickness reduction in an aluminum sheet caused by corrosion and friction using SH-EMAT (shear horizontal, electromagnetic acoustic transducer) is described. Since this method is based on the measurement of the time-of-flight and amplitude change of guided waves caused from the thickness reduction, it provides information on the thinning defects. Information was obtained on the changes of the various wave features, such as their time-of-flight and amplitude, and their correlations with the thickness reduction were investigated. The interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes were used for the detection of thinning defects. The measurements of these features using SH waves were performed on aluminum specimens with regions thinned by 7.2% to 29.5% of the total thickness. It is shown that the time-of-flight measurement provides an estimation of the thickness reduction and length of the thinning defects.
