Residual Stress Analysis of the Overlay Weld on the Dissimilar Metal Butt Weld (이종재이종재료 Butt 용접에 대한 Overlay 용접의 잔류응력해석)

  • In recent years, the dissimilar metal, Alloy 82/182 welds used to connect stainless steel piping and low alloy steel or carbon steel components in nuclear reactor piping system have experienced cracking due to primary water stress corrosion(PWSCC). It is well known that one reason of the cracking is the residual stress by the weld. But, it is difficult to estimate exactly weld residual stress due to many parameters of welding. In this paper, the analysis of 3 FEM models made by ABAQUS Code is performed to estimate exactly the weld residual stress on the dissimilar metal weld. 3 FEM models are Butt model, Repair model and Overlay model and are the plane.strain 2D model. The thermal analysis and the stress analysis are performed on each model and the residual stresses on each model were calculated and compared respectively. Also, the specimen of Butt model was made and the residual stresses were measured by X-Ray method and Hole Drilling Technique. These results were compared with the FEM result of Butt model.

  • Weld residual stresses can be a major concern in structural integrity assessments such as a nuclear power plant. In this paper, detailed weld residual stress analyses were presented for a typical multi-pass weld of pipe-butt weld and plate T-butt weld. The calculated residual stress distributions were compared with those of the measured data and recommended profiles in R6 and BS7910. Defect assessment which is based on the stress intensity factor(SIF) calculations was carried out for a plate T-butt weld with cracks considering the weld residual stress distributions.

  • Determination of weld-induced residual stress has been an important issue in nuclear power industry because several failures were reported in dissimilar metal weld parts due to primary water stress corrosion cracking. In this context, a couple of remarkable round robin analyses were conducted to quantify the welding simulation variables and to establish optimized numerical analysis process. The purpose of the present research is to introduce welding simulation results for a safety and relief nozzle, which has a dissimilar metal weld part as well as a similar metal weld part. First, finite element analyses are carried out to calculate residual stresses at the inside of nozzle considering only dissimilar metal welding.   • his paper aimed to understand the residual stress in the dissimilar metal welds of nuclear power plant. Two kinds of residual stress were considered, which caused by welding and machining. Residual stress due to mechanical machining was measured by hole-drilling technique and x-ray diffraction method for the SA508 and F316L. Weld residual stress at dissimilar metal weld between SA508 and F316L was evaluated by FEA. Residual stress profiles were obtained for the inside surface and through thickness of welds. Machining effect was also analyzed by FEA. According to the residual stress measurement, it was observed that mechanical machining can generate tensile stress on the surface of the test material. However, FEA results showed that mechanical machining did not increase the tensile stress on the surface of weld region. Further study with more elaborate measurement and numerical analysis is required to identify the effect of machining on residual stress in the dissimilar metal weld region.

  • Weld overlay is one of the residual stress mitigation methods which arrest crack initiation and crack growth. Therefore weld overlay can be applied to the region where cracking is likely to be. An overlay weld used in this manner is termed a preemptive weld overlay(PWOL). In pressurized water reactor(PWR) dissimilar metal weld is susceptible region for primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC). In order to examine the effect of PWOL on residual stress mitigation, PWOL was applied to a specific dissimilar metal weld of Kori nuclear power plant by finite element analysis method. As a result, strong compressive residual stress was made in PWSCC susceptible region and PWOL was proved effective preemptive repair method for weldment.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic nano crystal surface modification (UNSM) on residual stress mitigation after Weld Inlay repair for butt dissimilar metal weld with Alloy 82/182 in reactor vessel In/Outlet nozzle. As-welded and Weld Inlay specimens were made in accordance with design standard of ASME Code Case N-766, and two planes of their weld specimens were peened by the optimum UNSM process condition. Peening characteristics for weld specimens after UNSM treatment were evaluated by surface roughness and Vickers hardness test. And, residual stress for weld specimens developed from before and after UNSM treatment was measured and evaluated by instrumented indentation technique. Consequently, it was revealed that the mitigation of residual stress in weld metal after Weld Inlay repair of reactor vessel In/Outlet nozzle could be possible through UNSM treatment.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) has been found in the weld region of the nuclear power plant. Welding can produce tensile residual stress. Tensile residual stress contributes to the initiation and growth of PWSCC. It is important to estimate weld residual stress accurately to predict or prevent the initiation and growth of PWSCC. This paper shows the results of finite element analysis and measurement experiment for weld residual stress. For the study, four kinds of specimen were fabricated with the materials used in the nuclear power plant. Residual stresses were measured by four kinds of methods of hole drilling, x-ray diffraction, instrumented indentation and sectioning. Through the study, numerical analysis and measurement results were compared and the characteristics of each measurement technique were observed.

  • In nuclear power plants, ferritic low alloy steel components were connected with austenitic stainless steel piping system through alloy 82/182 butt weld. There have been incidents recently where cracking has been observed in the dissimilar metal weld. Alloy 82/182 is susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking. Weld-induced residual stress is main factor for crack growth. Therefore exact estimation of residual stress is important for reliable operating. This paper presents residual stress computation performed by 6" safety & relief nozzle. Based on 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional finite element analyses, effect of welding variables on residual stress variation is estimated for sensitivity analysis.

  • In the welding process, weldments usually include repair weld during the manufacturing process. Repair welds is supposed to cause strong tensile residual stress. Moreover weldments, usually made by Alloy 82/182, is susceptible to PWSCC. Therefore, mitigation of welding residual stress in weldments is important for reliable operating. PWOL is one of the methods for mitigation and verified for over twenty years. In this paper, residual stress distribution of repaired weldments and the effect of PWOL on mitigation is examined for surge nozzle.

  • This study is performed to compare characteristics of various measurement technique for weld residual stress. AISI 304 plate with one path weld on the surface was manufactured for this study. Hole drilling method, X-ray diffraction method and instrumented indentation method were used to measure the residual stress before and after welding. All the results were compared and analyzed.
