Effects of Chemical Compositions on Cold Cracking of Steel Weldments (전기아연 도금강판에서 단상 AC와 인버터 DC 용접기의저항 점용접 연속타점 수명 평가)

  • 자동차의 경량화, 안전성 그리고 내식성 향상을 위하여 고강도 강판 및 도금 강판의 적용이 증가하면서 자동차 산업의 많은 부분에서 적용되는 저항 점용접에서도 고강도 강판과 도금강판의 적용이 증가하는 추세이다. 이에 따라 고강도 강판과 도금 강판의 낮은 용접성을 개선하기 위하여 기존의 단상 AC 용접기에서 전류 파형의 형태를 개선한 인버터 DC 용접기가 차체 조립라인에서 많이 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 고강도 강판의 저항 점용접의 연속타점 시 단상 AC용접기와 인버터 DC용접기의 전극의 연속타점 수명의 차이를 비교하고 분석하기 위해 590MPa 급 전기아연도금강판을 이용하여 AWS 규격에 연속타점실험을 기준으로 단상 AC 와 인버터 DC 용접기의 연속타점 실험을 실시하였다. 연속타점실험 중에 전극의 형상관찰을 위해 100타점 간격으로 carbon paper를 이용해 전극 직경 변화를 관찰 하였으며, 100 타점간격으로 동저항을 측정하고 인장 전단 시편과 Peel test 시편을 제작하여 연속타점 시 단상 AC와 인버터 DC 용접기의 저항 점용접 연속타점 수명을 비교 분석하였다. 그리고 연속타점 실험 후 사용된 전극의 표면과 단면 형상을 각각 OM, SEM, EDX로 분석하여 전극 표면의 Zn과 합금화 된 전극의 합금층을 분석하였다. 그 결과 590MPa급 전기아연도금강판의 저항 점용점 연속타점 수명평가에서 인버터 DC 용접기가 단상 AC 용접기보다 200타점 더 우수한 연속타점 수명을 보유하였다. 특히 인장강도 기준 측면에서는 인버터 DC 용접기의 전극 연속타점수명은 매우 우수하다.

Prediction of Steady-State Stresses within Heat Affected Zone Due to Creep Mismatch in Welded Straight Pipes (직관 용접부의 크리프 특성 불균일에 따른 열영향부 정상상태 응력 예측)

  • This paper reports the steady-state stresses within the heat affected zone (HAZ) of a welded straight pipe subject to creep. The creep constants and exponent are varied systematically to see the effect of various mismatches in creep properties on the steady-state creep stresses, via detailed two-dimensional finite element (FE) creep analyses. The weldments consist of the base metal and weld metal with the HAZ, which are characterized using the idealized power creep laws with the same creep exponent. The internal pressure and axial loading are considered to see the effect of the loading mode. To quantify the creep stresses, a creep mismatch factor is introduced as a function of the creep constants and exponent. It is concluded that the ratio of the section-averaged stresses for a mismatched case to those for an evenmatched case are linearly dependent on the mismatch factor. The results are compared with the FE results, including the Type IV region, as well as the R5 procedure.

  • Alloy 617 is one of the primary candidate materials to be used in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system as an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX). To investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of Alloy 617 weldments at a high temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, fully reversed strain-controlled fatigue tests were conducted with the total strain values ranging from 0.6~1.5%. The weldment specimens were machined using the weld pads fabricated with a single V-grove configuration by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The fatigue life is reduced as the total strain range increases. For all testing conditions, the cyclic stress response behavior of the Alloy 617 weldments exhibited the initial cyclic strain hardening phenomenon during the initial small number of cycles. Furthermore, the overall fatigue cracking and the propagation or cracks showed a transgranular failure mode.

  • It is very essential to get the accurate classification of defects in primary pressure vessel and piping welds for the safety of nuclear power plant. Ultrasonic testing has been widely applied to inspect primary pressure vessel and piping welds of nuclear power plants during PSI / ISI. Classification of flaws in weldments from their ultrasonic scattering signals is very important in quantitative nondestructive evaluation. This problem is ideally suited to a modern ultrasonic Pattern recognition technique. Here, a brief discussion on systematic approach to this methodology is presented including ultrasonic feature extraction, feature selection and classification. A stronger emphasis is placed on Fuzzy-UTSCS (UT signal classification system) as efficient classifiers for many practical classification problems. As an example Fuzzy-UTSCS is applied to classify flaws in ferrite pressure vessel weldments into two types such as linear and volumetric. It is shown that Fuzzy-UTSCS is able to exhibit higher performance than other classifiers in the defect classification.

  • Japanese low activation terrific steel(JLF) is a good material for the parts of heat exchanger such as blanket and diverter. At first, JLF was developed as a candidate for structural materials in nuclear fusion applications. However, the development of the jointing technique of JLF steel to other materials is important for wide applications of this material to the industry fields. Recently the jointing technologies including diffusion bonding, brazing, roll bonding, explosive bonding and hot iso-static pressing have been studied for the heterogeneous materials of JLF-1 steel(Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta) and stainless steel(STS304). Friction welding is one of the most popular welding methods for two different kinds of materials. In this paper, the JLF-1 steel was jointed to SIS304 by friction welding method and the optimal conditions of the friction welding discussed. Acoustic emission was used as a nondestructive technique to evaluate the weld quality in processing.

  • In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of fatigue fracture on TB(Tailored Blank) weldment by comparing the fatigue crack propagation characteristics of base metal with those of TB welded sheet used for vehicle body panels. We also investigated the influence of center crack on the fatigue characteristic of laser weld sheet of same thickness. We conducted an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on the base metal specimen of 1.2mm thickness of cold-rolled metal sheet(SPCSD) and 2.0mm thickness of hot-rolled metal sheet(SAPH440) and 1.2+2.0mm TB specimen. We also made an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on 2.0+2.0mm and 1.2+1.2mm thickness TB specimen which had center crack. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth on the base metal were different from those on 1.2+2.0mm thickness TB specimen. The fatigue crack growth rate of the TB welded specimens is slower in low stress intensity factor range $({\Delta}K)$ region and faster in high${\Delta}K$ region than that of the base metal specimens. The slant crack angle slightly influenced the crack propagation of the TB specimen of 2.0+2.0mm thinkness.

  • Currently, the load transfer's mechanism from a beam to a column has yet to ve clarified in a concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) structure with a connection type of an exterior diaphragm. The loads for each floor are transferred to the concrete core from a steel beam through ha contacted face between an in-filled concrete and the interior surface of a steel tube. Thus, a Push-Out test was performed to investigate the load transfer mechanism. A total of 30 samples were tested to confirm the bond stress and/or axial load distribution between a steel tube and in-filled concrete for CFT column. The main parameters considered for this study included concrete type, steel tube-shape/length, and the effect of a weld joint wit ha backing strip for a column splice. Test results were summarized to confirm load transfer behavior between a concrete and steel tube for each experimental parameter, using the analytical approach to verify experimental results.

  • Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. And it is well known that volume expansion due to phase transformation could influence in the case of welding of high tensile strength steels on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. In this study, we investigated the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress through experiment. And three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis is conducted to reproduce the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress. Also we carried out the analysis of welding residual stress in welds of similar or dissimilar steels considering the effect of residual stress relaxation due to phase transformation.

Experimental Study on Fatigue Crack in Welded Crane Runway Girders (2) -Repair methods of Fatigue Crack- (크레인 거더의 피로균열에 관한 실험적 연구 (2) -피로균열의 보수법-)

  • Four types of repair procedures are applied to the fatigue cracked crane runway gilders, which are stop-holes as crack arrester stop-holes reinforced with high strength bolts, welding repair and reinforcement with high strength bolted splices. The fatgiue cracks are reinitiated at the region where stop-holes and weld repairments are applied, while none of the cracks are observed in the cases of stop-holes reinforcement and reinforcement with high strength bolted splices. When using stop-holes and hole-reinforcement all repaired regions show a same fatigue strength to the one before the repairments. The experiments also reveal that the proper weldment is an essential factor when applying the welding repairement as a properly welding produces the same level of fatigue strength after the repairement. When the situation permits to use reinforcement with high strength boilted splices, the experiments shows the repairment is the best possible method among the procedures available.

  • Existing tubes for concrete filled tubular structure are made through welding of four plates irrespective, but the production performance is poor and special welding technique is needed to weld the internal or through diaphragm. Accordingly, We developed a welded built-up square steel tube having a welding lines and a stiffeners at location out of stress concentration. The welded built-up square steel tube occurred a interference with stiffeners at the internal or through diaphragm, therefore researches of a external diaphragm for welded built-up square CFT column connections are needed for the purpose of avoidance of a interfere with stiffeners. In this study we suggest a design formulation for external diaphragm of the welded built-up square CFT external diaphragm connections. Four specimens were manufactured for a experimental test, then we analyzed the behaviors of the specimens.
