An efficient and effective access to needed information becomes an important factor in the modern information society. Many people have developed information retrieval (IR) systems that retrieve needed information from a large amount of data at a given time. However, most freely available IR systems have been developed for English text rather than for Korean text. In this research, we have analyzed the IR system freeWAIS-sf, and localized it with the Korean morphological analyzer, namely HAM. The localized freeWAIS-sf can handle both English text and Korean text simultaneously. We have also modified the weighting scheme of freeWAIS-sf. The experimental result shows that the modified weighting scheme outperforms the original one in terms of retrieval effectiveness.

The reinforcement learning algorithm has proven its potential in solving sequential decision-making problems under uncertainties, such as finding paths to route data packets in wireless sensor networks. With reinforcement learning, the computation of the optimum path requires careful definition of the so-called reward function, which is defined as a linear function that aggregates multiple objective functions into a single objective to compute a numerical value (reward) to be maximized. In a typical defined linear reward function, the multiple objectives to be optimized are integrated in the form of a weighted sum with fixed weighting factors for all learning agents. This study proposes a reinforcement learning -based routing protocol for wireless sensor network, where different learning agents prioritize different objective goals by assigning weighting factors to the aggregated objectives of the reward function. We assign appropriate weighting factors to the objectives in the reward function of a sensor node according to its hop-count distance to the sink node. We expect this approach to enhance the effectiveness of multi-objective reinforcement learning for wireless sensor networks with a balanced trade-off among competing parameters. Furthermore, we propose SDN (Software Defined Networks) architecture with multiple controllers for constant network monitoring to allow learning agents to adapt according to the dynamics of the network conditions. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme enhances the performance of wireless sensor network under varied conditions, such as the node density and traffic intensity, with a good trade-off among competing performance metrics.
Many different schemes of the adaptive observer and controller have been developed for both continuous and discrete systems. In this paper we have presented a new scheme of the reduced order adaptive observer for the single input discrete linear time invariant plant. The output equation of the plant, is transformed into the bilinear form in terms of system parameters and the states of the state variable filters. Using the plant output equation the discrete implicit adaptive observer based on the similar philosophy to Nuyan and Carroll is derived and the parameter adaptation algorithm is derived based on the exponentially weighted least square method. The adaptive model following control system is also constructed according to the proposed observer scheme. The proposed observer and controller are rather than simple structure and have a fast adaptive algorithm, so it may be expected that the scheme is suitable to the practical application of control system design. The effectiveness of the algorithm and structure is illustrated by the computer simulation of a third order system. The simulation results show that the convergence speed is proportinal to the increasing of weighting factor alpha, and that the full order and reduced order observer have similar convergence characteristics.

This paper investigates the impacts of the drag-related weighting coefficients on mean velocity and turbulence structures. The transport equations for the Reynolds stress of vegetated open-channel flows are derived by using the temporal- and horizontal-averaging scheme. It is found that the total Reynolds stress of vegetated open channel flows consists of the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities and the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities. The drag-related weighting coefficient $C_{fk}$ for the total Reynolds stress component is found to be unit, while the coefficient for the Reynolds stress due to temporally fluctuating velocities can be negligible. This is the reason why very small weighting coefficients in previous studies yield very good agreements with measured data. In other words, the Reynolds stress due to spatially fluctuating velocities remains still unknown, especially due to the large number of measuring locations. Through a developed Reynolds stress model, vegetated open-channel flows are simulated and compared with measured data from the literature. Comparisons reveal that the computed mean flow and Reynolds stress structures are hardly affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients. However, the computed turbulence intensity profiles are significant different with the drag-related weighting coefficients. A budget analysis of the transport equations for the Reynolds stress component is carried to investigate why turbulence intensity is affected by the drag-related weighting coefficients.
The classical optimal control (COC) method has been widely used for linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problems of structural control. However, the equation of motion of the structure is incorporated into the optimization model as the constraint condition for the LQR problem, which needs to be solved through the Riccati equation under certain assumptions. In this study, an explicit optimal control (EOC) method is proposed based on the explicit time-domain method (ETDM). By use of the explicit formulation of structural responses, the LQR problem with the constraint of equation of motion can be transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem, and therefore the control law can be derived directly without solving the Riccati equation. To further optimize the weighting parameters adopted in the control law using the gradient-based optimization algorithm, the sensitivities of structural responses and control forces with respect to the weighting parameters are derived analytically based on the explicit expressions of dynamic responses of the controlled structure. Two numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of the EOC method and the optimization scheme for weighting parameters involved in the control law.

Recent advancements in broadband wireless communication technologies enable mobile users to receive video streaming services with various smart devices. The long term evolution (LTE) network provides high bandwidth and low latency for several emerging mobile applications. This paper proposes the buffer aware scheduling (BAS) approach to schedule the downlink video traffic in LTE network. The proposed BAS scheme applies the weighting function to heuristically adjust the scheduling priority by considering the buffer status and channel condition of UE so as to reduce the time that UE stays in the connected state without receiving data. Both of 1080P and 2160P resolution video streaming sources were applied for exhaustive simulations to examine the performance of the proposed scheme by comparing to that of the fair bandwidth (FB) and the best channel quality indicator (CQI) schemes. The simulation results indicate that the proposed BAS scheme not only achieves better performance in power saving, streaming delivery time, and throughput than the FB scheme while maintaining the similar performance as the best CQI scheme in light traffic load. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces streaming delivery time and generates less signaling overhead than the best CQI scheme when the traffic load is heavy.

We consider an optimal antenna weighting scheme for a closed-loop transmit antenna diversity system in Rayleigh fading channels. We derive a closed-form expression for the optimal transmitter weights that minimize the average bit error rate (BER) subject to fixed average and peak transmit power constraints. It is shown that the peak power limitation degrades the average BER performance more significantly as the available average power and/or the number of transmit antennas increase.
Topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a structure whose eigenfrequency coincides with a specified frequency. The topology optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the structural frequency and a given frequency using the homogenization method and the modified optimality criteria method. It turns out that the value of a weighting factor in the updating scheme plays an important role to achieve both a suitable speed and a stable convergence of an algorithm. Unlike a constant weighting factor in previous works, it is suggested that a weight factor is varied during the iteration to control the amount of the frequency change. To substantiate the proposed approach two-dimensional structural design problems are presented and the resulted topology layouts for the specified eigenfrequency are compared to layouts for maximizing the corresponding eigenfrequency.

In this study, we address the problem of producing probability forecasts of summer seasonal rainfall, on the basis of Hindcast experiments from a ensemble of GCMs(cwb, gcps, gdaps, metri, msc_gem, msc_gm2, msc_gm3, msc_sef and ncep). An advanced Hierarchical Bayesian weighting scheme is developed and used to combine nine GCMs seasonal hindcast ensembles. Hindcast period is 23 years from 1981 to 2003. The simplest approach for combining GCM forecasts is to weight each model equally, and this approach is referred to as pooled ensemble. This study proposes a more complex approach which weights the models spatially and seasonally based on past model performance for rainfall. The Bayesian approach to multi-model combination of GCMs determines the relative weights of each GCM with climatology as the prior. The weights are chosen to maximize the likelihood score of the posterior probabilities. The individual GCM ensembles, simple poolings of three and six models, and the optimally combined multimodel ensemble are compared.
Rigid plate elastically supported at the edges is modeled and the performance of the optimal vibration control under sinusoidal excitation is tested. The controller based on the linear quadratic regulator with output feedback is designed to control the multi-degree of freedom vibration. Relative weighting parameters are considered as design constraints to determine the limitation of maximum control force and state parameters. Control force calculated by proportional output feedback of the displacement and velocity is used to suppress the vibration induced by the sinusoidal external force. The active vibration control of vibrating plate by the LQR controller is examined through the numerical simulations that show the effectiveness of optimal control scheme on the three degrees of freedom structure.
