  • Model-based predictions of structural behavior are negatively affected by uncertainties of various type and in various stages of the structural analysis. The present paper focusses on dynamic analysis and addresses the effects of uncertainties concerning material and geometric parameters, mainly in the context of modal analysis of large-scale structures. Given the large number of uncertain parameters arising in this case, highly scalable simulation-based methods are adopted, which can deal with possibly thousands of uncertain parameters. In order to solve the reliability problem, i.e., the estimation of very small exceedance probabilities, an advanced simulation method called Line Sampling is used. In combination with an efficient algorithm for the estimation of the most important uncertain parameters, the method provides good estimates of the failure probability and enables one to quantify the error in the estimate. Another aspect here considered is the uncertainty quantification for closely-spaced eigenfrequencies. The solution here adopted represents each eigenfrequency as a weighted superposition of the full set of eigenfrequencies. In a case study performed with the FE model of a satellite it is shown that the effects of uncertain parameters can be very different in magnitude, depending on the considered response quantity. In particular, the uncertainty in the quantities of interest (eigenfrequencies) turns out to be mainly caused by very few of the uncertain parameters, which results in sharp estimates of the failure probabilities at low computational cost.

  • For investigating the effect of fuel stratification on flame propagation, initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different axially stratified states in a port injection SI engine. Stratification was controlled by the combination of the port swirl ratio and injection timing. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Firstly in this paper, the characteristics under no port-generated swirl condition, i.e. normal conventional case was studied. Under various stratified conditions, flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flames propagation. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area and luminosity. The stability was also evaluated through the standard deviation of flame area and propagation distance, and mean absolute deviation of propagating direction. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing do not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability is closely related to the engine stability and lean misfire limit.

  • This paper describes a procedure to develop fragility curves for woodframe structures subjected to lateral wind loads. The fragilities are cast in terms of horizontal displacement criteria (maximum drift at the top of the shearwalls). The procedure is illustrated through the development of fragility curves for one and two-story residential woodframe buildings in high wind regions. The structures were analyzed using a monotonic pushover analysis to develop the relationship between displacement and base shear. The base shear values were then transformed to equivalent nominal wind speeds using information on the geometry of the baseline buildings and the wind load equations (and associated parameters) in ASCE 7-02. Displacement vs. equivalent nominal wind speed curves were used to determine the critical wind direction, and Monte Carlo simulation was used along with wind load parameter statistics provided by Ellingwood and Tekie (1999) to construct displacement vs. wind speed curves. Wind speeds corresponding to a presumed limit displacement were used to construct fragility curves. Since the fragilities were fit well using a lognormal CDF and had similar logarithmic standard deviations (${\xi}$), a quick analysis to develop approximate fragilities is possible, and this also is illustrated. Finally, a compound fragility curve, defined as a weighted combination of individual fragilities, is developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest a moving-forward solution to the menu development of traditional foods from the analyses results, by surveying 180 college students with food majors in order to identify what effects the acceptability of traditional foods bring to menu development and their correlations. As the result showed, the acceptability of Korean traditional foods was lowering generally due to the popularity of light meals like fast food. Nevertheless, college students with majors of foodservice, cooking and foods than the students with other majors chose one-dish meals and the kinds of soup and pot stews as a favorite food more in terms of curiosity and taste, by which they were implied to have been positioned as popular foods as such. Accordingly, in order to raise the acceptability of traditional foods among other students more when the college students with food majors get related jobs in future, the development of related curricula mainly focused on simplification and standardization in menu combination is more weighted than anything else.

  • The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.

  • We developed a new generalized synthetic procedure, called as "heat-up process," to produce uniform-sized nanocrystals of many transition metals and oxides without a size selection process. We were able to synthesize uniform magnetite nanocrystals as much as 1 kilogram-scale from the thermolysis of Fe-oleate complex. Clever combination of different nanoscale materials will lead to the development of multifunctional nano-biomedical platforms for simultaneous targeted delivery, fast diagnosis, and efficient therapy. In this presentation, I would like to present some of our group's recent results on the designed fabrication of multifunctional nanostructured materials based on uniform-sized magnetite nanoparticles and their medical applications. Uniform ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles of <3 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron-oleate complex in the presence of oleyl alcohol. These ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited good T1 contrast effect. In in vivo T1 weighted blood pool magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), iron oxide nanoparticles showed longer circulation time than commercial gadolinium complex, enabling high resolution imaging. We used 80 nm-sized ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals for T2 MRI contrast agent for tracking transplanted pancreatic islet cells and single-cell MR imaging. We reported on the fabrication of monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles immobilized with uniform pore-sized mesoporous silica spheres for simultaneous MRI, fluorescence imaging, and drug delivery. We synthesized hollow magnetite nanocapsules and used them for both the MRI contrast agent and magnetic guided drug delivery vehicle.

  • While many astrophysical disks are vertically stratified and obey a polytropic equation of state, most studies on gravitational instability (GI) of flattened systems consider isothermal, razor-thin disks by taking vertical averages of disk properties. We investigate local GI of rotating pressure-confined polytropic disks with resolved vertical stratification by performing linear stability analysis. We find that the GI of vertically-stratified disks is in general a combination of conventional razor-thin Jeans modes and incompressible modes. The incompressible modes that dominate in the limit of the maximal disk compression require surface distortion and are an unstable version of terrestrial water waves. Disks with a steeper equation of state are found to be more Jeans unstable because they tend to have a smaller vertical scale height as well as a steeper temperature gradient corresponding to lower pressure support. GI depends more sensitively on the vertical temperature than density distribution. The density-weighted, harmonic mean, rather than the simple mean, of the adiabatic sound speed well describes the dispersion relation of horizontal modes, and thus is appropriate in the expression for Toomre Q stability parameter of razor-thin disks. We generalize Q into vertically-stratified disks, and discuss astrophysical application of our work.

  • In many studies, considerable attention has been focussed upon choosing a model which represents underlying process of time series and forecasting the future. In the real world, however, there may be some cases that one model can not reflect all the characteristics of original time series. Under such circumstances, we may get better performance by combining the forecasts from several models. The most popular methods for combining forecasts involve taking a weighted average of multiple forecasts. But the weights are usually unstable. In cases the assumptions of normality and unbiasedness for forecast errors are satisfied, a Bayesian method can be used for updating the weights. In the real world, however, there are many circumstances the Bayesian method is not appropriate. This paper proposes a PNN(Probabilistic Neural Net) approach as a method for combining forecasts that can be applied when the assumption of normality or unbiasedness for forecast errors is not satisfied. In this paper, PNN method, which is similar to Bayesian approach, is suggested as an updating method of the unstable weights in the combination of the forecasts. The PNN method has been usually used in the field of pattern recognition. Unlike the Bayesian approach, it requires no assumption of a specific prior distribution because it gets probabilities by using the distribution estimated from given data. Empirical results reveal that the PNN method offers superior predictive capabilities.

  • Mobile image retrieval is one of the most exciting and fastest growing research fields in the area of multimedia technology. As the amount of digital contents continues to grow users are experiencing increasing difficulty in finding specific images in their image libraries. This paper proposes a new efficient and effective mobile image retrieval method that applies a weighted combination of color and texture utilizing spatial-color and second order statistics. The system for mobile image searches runs in real-time on an iPhone and can easily be used to find a specific image. To evaluate the performance of the new method, we assessed the iPhone simulations performance in terms of average precision and recall using several image databases and compare the results with those obtained using existing methods. Experimental trials revealed that the proposed descriptor exhibited a significant improvement of over 13% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to the best of the other descriptors.

  • From the discovery of Alago's disk, a number of trials and efforts have been concentrated on a small-sized and light-weighted induction motor. They have devoted themseleves, however, mainly to a improvement of cooling effect, a proper weight-distribution of copper and iron and desirable number of slots. In consequence, such an effort restricted only to the field of design, has resulted in unsatisfactory developments in the insulating materials consisting of the main parts of an induction motor. The quality of fibre and paper which are used as class-A insulation materials with their "compound" and "varnish" has been increased to some extent. Similarly Class-B insulation materials like asbest mica has been almost a combination of inorganic and binding materials. But nowadays synthesic chemistry is making a remarkable progress. So it comes possible for us to have silicon resin and other good ones of similar charateristics. And even a thin silicon resin insures us to get excellent heat-pro f and insulation, so a better space factor and cost-down in motor design have come possible in most advanced nations of the world, but not in our country. Furthermore, a consideration of productivity and economy in manufacturing process has been neglected by a majority of engineers. This is more unpleasant und more undesirable. I think this rational method of induction motor design using new synthesic resin will devote in making your productivity and economy better. And the nation-wide standard value of electric motor size is sited here. size is sited here.
