In this paper, a discrete optimum design program was developed using the refined fuzzy-genetic algorithms based on the genetic algorithms and the fuzzy theory. The optimum design in this study can perform section and shape optimization simultaneously for planar and spatial steel structures. In this paper, the objective function is the weight of steel structures and the constraints are the design limits defined by the design and buckling strengths, displacements, and thicknesses of the member sections. The design variables are the dimensions and coordinates of the steel sections. Design examples are given to show the applicability of the discrete optimum design using the improved fuzzy-genetic algorithms in this study.

The optimization study are carried out for helicopter rotor blades with composite box-beam spar. The objective function is to minimize the weight of rotor blades subject to frequency, aeroelastic stability and failure constraints. Design variables include the number of ply and ply angles of the laminated walls. The beam model of a hinge less rotor blade is based on a large deflection beam theory to describe the arbitrary large deflections and rotations. The p-k method and unsteady two dimensional strip theory are used to calculate aeroelastic stability boundary.

The transient nature and complex geometries of two-phase gas-liquid flows cause fundamental difficulties when measuring flow velocity using an electromagnetic flowmeter. Recently, a current-sensing flowmeter was introduced to obtain measurements with high temporal resolution (Ahn et al.). In this study, current-sensing flowmeter theory was applied to measure the fast velocity transients in slug flows. The velocity fields of axisymmetric gas-liquid slug flow in a vertical pipe were obtained using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method, and the virtual potential distributions for the electrodes of finite size were also computed using the finite volume method for simulating slug flow. The output signal prediction for slug flow was carried out from the velocity and virtual potential (or weight function) fields. The flowmeter was numerically calibrated to obtain the cross-sectional liquid mean velocity at an electrode plane from the predicted output signal. Two calibration parameters are proposed for this procedure: a flow pattern coefficient and a localization parameter. The flow pattern coefficient was defined by the ratio of the liquid resistance between the electrodes for two-phase flow with respect to that for single-phase flow, and the localization parameter was introduced to avoid errors in the flowmeter readings caused by liquid acceleration or deceleration around the electrodes. These parameters were also calculated from the computed velocity and virtual potential fields. The results can be used to obtain the liquid mean velocity from the slug flow signal measured by a current-sensing flowmeter.
Instead of sensory evaluation, we designed an evaluation method of the setting function of hairstyling products, based on an original theory focusing on changes in bending stress observed when a load with continuous bending is applied to human hair. Specifically, we developed a device to measure bending stress to quickly and objectively evaluate the condition of human hair, particularly its dynamic properties such as the setting function, following the application of hairstyling products. This device generates a load with continuous bending while applying a pendulum motion to a hair tress, one end of which is anchored. The setting function and holding power of resins of various molecular weight and ionic properties were evaluated using this device. The results demonstrated a close correlation with those obtained by experts' sensory evaluation. The evaluation results of bending stress and holding rate confirmed that the combined use of two different resins could improve the function of setting preparations. Evaluation using this device was able to substitute for sensory evaluation, and offers quick objective evaluation and detection of changes in the holding power of hairstyling products over time. We conclude that evaluation using this device is a promising new method.

An improved version of the Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is presented here for addressing the problem of transverse shear locking in shear-deformable beams with a high length over thickness ratio. Based upon Timoshenko's theory of thick beams, it has been recognized that shear locking will be completely eliminated if the rotation field is constructed to match the field of slope, given by the first derivative of displacement. This criterion is applied directly to the most commonly implemented version of EFGM. However in the numerical process to integrate strain energy, the second derivative of the standard Moving Least Square (MLS) shape functions must be evaluated, thus requiring at least a $C^1$ continuity of MLS shape functions instead of $C^0$ continuity in the conventional EFGM. Yet this hindrance is overcome effortlessly by only using at least a $C^1$ weight function. One-dimensional quartic spline weight function with $C^2$ continuity is therefore adopted for this purpose. Various numerical results in this work indicate that the modified version of the EFGM does not exhibit transverse shear locking, reduces stress oscillations, produces fast convergence, and provides a surprisingly high degree of accuracy even with coarse domain discretizations.

The preconsolidation pressure has been commonly determined by oedometer test. However, it can also be determined by in-situ test, such as piezocone test with theoretical and(or) empirical correlations. Recently, Neural Network(NN) theory was applied and some models were proposed to estimate the preconsolidation pressure or OCR. However, since the optimization process of synaptic weights of NN model is dependent on the initial synaptic weights, NN models which are trained with different initial weights can't avoid the variability on prediction result for new database even though they have same structure and use same transfer function. In this study, Committee Neural Network(CNN) model is proposed to improve the initial weight dependency of multi-layered neural network model on the prediction of preconsolidation pressure of soft clay from piezocone test result. It was found that even though the NN model has the optimized structure for given training data set, it still has the initial weight dependency, while the proposed CNN model can improve the initial weight dependency of the NN model and provide a consistent and precise inference result than existing NN models.

Geneal Structure optimization is utilized to minimize the weight of structures while satisfying constraints imposed on stress, displacements and natural frequencies, etc. Sandwich structures consist of inside core and outside face sheets. The selected sandwich structures are isotropic sandwich beams and isotropic sandwich plate. The face sheets are treated as membrane and assumed to carry only tensions, while the core is assumed to carry only transverse shear. The characteristic of the varying area are considered by adding the projected component of the tension to the transverse shear. The bending theory and energy method are adopted for analyzing sandwich beams and plates, respectively. In the optimization process, the cost function is the weight of a structure, and a deflection and stress constraints are considered. Design variable are thickness and tapering coefficients which determine the shape of a structure. An existing optimization code is used for solving the formulated problems.
We study on the phase diagram of the polymer blend. For this purpose, one PS (polystyrene) and two PI(polyisoprene) were employed whose molecular weights were low enough to make the experimental determinations possible. The weight-average molecular weight(Mw) of PS was 2514, and Mws of two PIs were 2700. Interaction energy density (IED) of the Flory-Huggins lattice theory was defined as a function of temperature and composition, and the consequent equations for the binodal, and critical points were derived. By fitting the experimental binodal points to the derived binodal curve with a nonlinear regression method, the expression for the IED was determined. And the expression for the IED obtained from this study was compared with those reported in the literatures. Also were discussed the importance of accuracy in the expression the IED, and the IED's dependency on the temperature, composition and molecular weights.

MFOD(Multi-Fuction Observation Devices) must be observed and measured the distance of the target with laser rangefinder, as well as satellite navigation devices and magnetic north by taking advantage of measuring the exact coordinates of the target is a portable observation. In this paper, it suggests for the multi-function observational study concepts of honor for the optimal design through the highest performance and lightest weight on how to implement the approach in theory.
Let C[0, T] denote a generalized analogue of Wiener space, the space of real-valued continuous functions on the interval [0, T]. Define $Z_{\vec{e},n}$ : C[0, T] → ℝn+1 by $$Z_{\vec{e},n}(x)=\(x(0),\;{\int}_0^T\;e_1(t)dx(t),{\cdots},\;{\int}_0^T\;e_n(t)dx(t)\)$$, where e1,…, en are of bounded variations on [0, T]. In this paper we derive a simple evaluation formula for Radon-Nikodym derivatives similar to the conditional expectations of functions on C[0, T] with the conditioning function $Z_{\vec{e},n}$ which has an initial weight and a kind of drift. As applications of the formula, we evaluate the Radon-Nikodym derivatives of various functions on C[0, T] which are of interested in Feynman integration theory and quantum mechanics. This work generalizes and simplifies the existing results, that is, the simple formulas with the conditioning functions related to the partitions of time interval [0, T].
