Experiments were carried out to study the germination and emergence of the red rice(sare) as a weed, Mong-geun sare, Sal sare, Ginkarag sare, Galsaegsal sare, Galsaegkarag sare. The germination and emergence of red rice were not greatly affected by soil salinification, soil pH and air temperature. Especially, in deep molding volume, emergence of red rice was greater than rice cultivar. It was considered to be due to the vitality of the mesocotyl. Submergence was expected to be a better way to control the red rice because germination rate of red rice was low under submergence.
Phenolic compounds present in upland weeds (Artemisia asiatica Nakai, Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik, Portulaca orleracea L. and Trifolium repens L.) which have shown allelopathic activity were determined using paper chromatography (PC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Effect of the determined phenolic compounds on germination and post-germination growth of test plants was also investigated. Kinds of phenolic compounds determined by PC in the four weed species were greater in the aqueous extract than in the methanol extract. Ferulic acid was found in both extracts of the weeds studied, whereas benzoic acid was that the weeds commonly contained hydroquinone, p-hydroxybenzoic, ferulic and cinnamic acids. Out of the phenolic compounds determined by PC and HPLC p-hydroxybenzoic, cinnamic and ferulic acids inhibited germination and post-germination growth of radish and sesame. Inhibition of the phenolic compounds on the radicle growth was greater than on the germination of the test plants.
The effects of various factors on germination of dormant Digitaria sanguinalis seeds were studied to obtain the basic informations on establishing an effective control method in upland crops. Germination of dormant seeds was most significantly promoted by light treatment, about 88-89%, and followed by the treatment of alternating temperatures (15 or 20$^{\circ}C$ to 35$^{\circ}C$), showing the similar effects like light. Removal of seed coats also increased germination of dormant seeds by 72%, next to the treatments of light and altering temperature. Potassium nitrate ($KNO_3$) at $10^{-2}M$ and concentrated sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) treatment at the duration of 8 minutes resulted in 20% and 37.8% of germination of dormant seeds, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of the untreated control. Under the conditions of altering temperature, gibberellic acid (GA) at $10^{-3}M$ to $10^{-6}M$, benzylandenin (BA) at $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-7}M$ and their combination had no effect on breaking of dormant weed seeds, and instead inhibited the promotive effects induced by the alternating temperature. However, under the constant temperature at 35$^{\circ}C$ in dark, all these treatments increased germination as much as 20% over the untreated control.
This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxic effects of 19 essential oils on seed germination and initial growth of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). We found that anise, cinnamon, citronella, clove, geranium, lemongrass, mustard and pine oils completely inhibited germination of rapeseed at $100{\times}$ dilute solution. Based on the inhibition rates of rapeseed emergence and initial growth, three essential oils (cinnamon, clove, and geranium) were selected as potential bio-herbicides. Under pre-emergence applications of cinnamon, clove, and geranium oils at 90 kg ai $ha^{-1}$, rates of rapeseed emergence were 7.1, 25.0, and 3.6% and its initial growth were 22.0, 9.9 and 11.0%, respectively.

Allelopathic activity of methanol extract from medicinal plants was determined based on the inhibition of germination, shoot and root length of Echinochloa crus-galli. The response was depended on the source of extracts and concentrations. Of the 20 test plants tested, Cnidium officinale showed most inhibition according to germination, shoot and root length of E. crus-galli. Based on the plant parts, the root extract of C. officinale had more inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli than the stem+leaf extract. Phytotoxic effects of the root extract on E. crus-galli showed 75% inhibition of seed germination, 95% inhibition of shoot growth, and 100% inhibition of root growth at the concentration of 1g/petridish. Sequential partitioning of root extract with organic solvents with increasing polarity showed that the ethylacetate fraction had the greatest inhibitory effect on E. crus-galli. Germination was not inhibited at any rate of ethylacetate fraction but shoot and root growth, were significantly inhibited even at 2mg/petridish. This indicates that the most toxic phytotoxin present in the root extract may be moderate polar compound.
This experiment was conducted to clarify the characteristics of germination and emergence of Panicum dichotomiflorum which is a noxious weed species in direct-seeded rice field. P. dichotomiflorum was planted with several treatments such as different depths of irrigation to verifiy the ecological habits of seedling emergence and growth. In order to know the germination characteristics, Panicum dichotomiflorum seeds, pretreated with low-temperature($4^{\circ}C$) stratification for breaking the dormancy, were germinated under different temperature regimes and water potentials. Germination rates of P. dichotomiflorum was increased from 0% of dormant seed to 1%, 35% and 44% by stratification for 21, 28 and 42 days, respectively. Two dominant weed species in directseeded rice fields, Echinochloa crus-galli and Panicum dichotomitlorum, showed different germination habit under different temperature regimes. Echinochloa crus-galli showed more higher germination rate than Panicum dichotomiflorum at relatively low temperature regime(20/$10^{\circ}C$). Both species germinated faster at 30/$20^{\circ}C$ than at 20/$10^{\circ}C$. When the water potential was lowered, germination of Panicum dichotomiflorum was reduced more drastically than Echinochloa crus-galli. The critical water potential for germination of P. dichotomiflorum was -0.7MPa but Echinochloa crus-galli was affected slightly by the same water potential. The results showed that Echinochloa crus-galli can germinate under more wide range of soil water potential than Panicum dichotomiflorum. Emergence of P. dichotomiflorum was highly affected by irrigation depth and the level of water table. When the depth of irrigation water was increased, emergence of P. dichotomiflorum was dragged and emergence rate showed significant difference under the irrigation depth deeper than 6cm. The maximum depth of irrigation water for survival of Panicum dichotomiflorum seedling was 9cm.
Several experiments were conducted in growth chambers and a greenhouse to determine the influence of various environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of Indian jointvetch. Fully matured seeds of Indian jointvetch germinated only 42%. The germination percent increased as the storage temperature increased with time. More than 90% seeds germinated when the seeds were kept at $40^{\circ}C$ for seven months, but germination was 58.9 and 55.1% when kept at 25 and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Non-dormant seeds of Indian jointvetch germinated 91.1 and 92.4% at 30 and $30/25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Germination percent increased with increasing both prethermal temperature and time. The prethermal temperature of $90^{\circ}C$ for 40 minutes was the best for maximum germination (94.5%). Germination and growth of Indian jointvetch tended to decrease slightly until -0.3 MPa osmotic potential (water stress induction) and then declined drastically and the seeds did not germinate at below -0.5 MPa osmotic potential. Indian jointvetch seems to grow well in moist and flooding conditions since emergence and growth of seedling increased with increasing soil moisture content and the water level.
This study was initiated to investigate seed germinating vigor, germination speed, and establishment characteristics of Festuca species under natural conditions ($5-25^{\circ}C$). Germination rate was 62.0% in CRF 'Audubon' to 97.0% in TF 'Olympic Gold'. It was greater with TF over fine-type fescues, being TF>SF>CF, HF>CRF. The germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 50% through 80%, was fastest with TF, medium to high with CF, medium with HF and SF, and slowest with CRF. However, it was approximately 4 days slower under natural conditions, as compared with that under alternative conditions ($15-25^{\circ}C$). Germination peak time was much faster with TF. It ranged from 0.73 to 1.84 days with TF, being 1.45 days in average. But it varied with 2.16 to 11.75 days among fine-type species. The peak time was longer in order of SFCF>SF>HF>CRF.
Petri dish and pot experiments were conducted to investigate germination and seedling emergence of Ammannia coccinea as influenced by environmental factors. The best germination of A. coccinea was obtained at $35/30^{\circ}C$ of temperature and 0 bar of osmotic potential, while no germination at temperatures of ${\leq}$$15^{\circ}C$ and ${\geq}$$40^{\circ}C$, osmotic potentials of ${\leq}$ -2.0 bar, or dark condition. The best seedling emergence was observed at $35/30^{\circ}C$, at which the first emergence of A. coccinea was observed at 7 days after sowing (DAS) with its maximum emergence reached at 10 DAS. No seedling emergence was observed at $15/10^{\circ}C$ with significant reduction at $40/35^{\circ}C$. Seedling emergence decreased with increasing soil depth, resulting in no seedling emergence at ${\geq}$ 3 cm. The Gompertz model well described the cumulative germination and seedling emergence of A. coccinea with time. Germination influenced by osmotic potential and seedling emergence influenced by soil burial depth were well described by the logistic model. Overall results indicate that A. coccinea is photoblastic and requires temperatures greater than $15^{\circ}C$, osmotic potential greater than -2.0 bar, and soil burial depth shallower than 3 cm for its germination and seedling emergence, which were faster than M. vaginalis but slower than E. crus-galli.
Two types of annual bluegrass have been reported, and those consist of annual type (Poa annua ssp. annua) and perennial type (Poa annua ssp. reptans). As a weed, annual bluegrasses are commonly found in putting greens and fairways in many golf courses. Due to its strong competitiveness such as tremendous seed reproduction rate a year, prostrate growth habit, and no herbicide availability, annual bluegrasses have been considered as one of the most hard-to-control weeds in turf management systems. A growth chamber study was conducted to determine seed dormancy and to understand seed germination characteristics of annual bluegrass (Poa annua ssp. annua). Freshly harvested seeds showed 80 and 55% germination at 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively, indicating that the optimum temperature of annual bluegrass is $30^{\circ}C$. However, the seed germination occurred only under light condition at any given temperature. This result demonstrated that light is prerequisite for the seed germination, and no primary dormancy of annual bluegrass seed exists. Secondary seed dormancy induced by unfavorable temperatures and dark condition was broken through 4 to 6 wk-storage at $4^{\circ}C$ with moisture, and the stored seeds germinated at $20^{\circ}C$ even under the dark. In red and far-red light trial, fresh seeds resulted in 40% germination under red while no seed germination occurred under far-red light condition, indicating that phytochrome Pr and Pfr could be related to annual bluegrass seed germination. When the far-red light replaced the red the germination was recovered, but this reversibility did not reach to the germination level under the red light only. This result implied that other lights than red and far-red would play an important role on seed germination of annual bluegrass.
