This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of weed flora in pastures in Jeju island of Korea and to establish the basic data for controlling them occurred in the pastures. Weed flora was investigated twice, May and July on 2003. There were a total of 207 weed species including 49 families. Among them 67 species were annual, 39 species were biennial and 101 species were perennial. The compositions of major plant families, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Rosaceae, Fabaceae were 17, 15, 8, 7, 6%, respectively. Sixty-eight species of exotics were occurred, as well. Rumex obtusifolius was the highest in importance analysis and the followings were in order of Trifolium repens, Artemisia princeps, Plantago asiatica, Potentilla anemonefolia and Rumex acetosella etc. Among the exotic weeds, R. obtusifolius, T. repens, R. acetosella and C. holosteoides var. hallaisanense might be most problematic weeds species in pastures in Jeju island in the future. And at the boundary of some pastures and mountains Smilax china, Duchesnea indica, Rosa maximowicziana, etc. 17 shrub species were also occurred.
This study was conducted to clarify effects of weed control methods on damages from agricultural chemicals of pear trees, growth of weeds and states of pear trees after treating pear orchards with different methods of weed controlling, density of GLU and application times. The growth and occupation rate were investigated after 10, 20 and 40 days of weeding treatment. According to a result of the first treatment conducted when weeds in the lower parts of crown in a pear orchard began to grow and grew about 20 cm, unwoven cloth covering showed the highest control value with 100% in all 14 kinds of grasses. In comparison, Stellaria aquatica and catchweed bedstraw showed 96.7% and 97.3% respectively in the 20 DAT investigate after the first treatment of GLU 540 g a.i. ha-1 and the high control value of 100% in other all kinds of grasses. According to an investigation of stalk enlargement, length of new shoot and the number of new shoot made to know differences in tree growth following treatment of the lower part of crown, to use weed killers two or three times a year or to eliminate grasses with machines have positive effects on cross growth of pear trees.
The study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of two winter cover crops, Chinese milk vetch (CMV) and rye, in minor cereal fields in 2009. The suppressing activities of cover crops were due to the allelopathy of cover crops during weed emerging periods and competitive activity during vegetative growth of weeds. Weed suppression by cover crops were changed from 26.5 g $m^{-2}$, 0.1 g $m^{-2}$ and 0.2 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on June 22 to 428.6 g $m^{-2}$, 1 g $m^{-2}$ and 403.9 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on July 22. The weed dry weights were further changed to 656.3 g $m^{-2}$, 607.8 g $m^{-2}$ and 511.8 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on August 22. The suppressing effect of cover crops also observed in minor cereals. Plant height and dry weight of sorghum was reduced to 68.7% and 33.6% of handweeding, respectively, on August 5. The reduction was recovered to 82.7% and 55.6% of control, respectively, on August 26. In addition, heading date of minor cereals was delayed by 7 days with rye.
Timely application and the choice of herbicides are crucial for red pepper production since the yield is significantly reduced by weed occurrence. Experiments were conducted to provide efficient weed control methods in red-pepper fields. The results suggest the followings: 1) in the field of prevalent grass weeds, application of pendimethalin EC as pre-emergence herbicide after transplanting followed by tank-mix with pendimethalin and fluazipfop-P-butyl EC as post-emergence at 3-5 leaf stage of Digitalia species gave a good control for 80 days without crop injury, 2) as for grass and other weeds occurrence, sequential application of tank-mix with glufosinate-ammonium SL and pendimethalin at 30 days after transplanting (DAT) followed by glufosinate-ammonium. at < 20 cm of weed height with 30 days' interval provided better weed control than 2-time application of glufosinate-ammonium. single application for 80 days in this trial. 3) To prevent from drifting of non-selective herbicide spray mist into red-pepper at furrow application, glufosinate-ammonium. should be applied at 15 cm of spray nozzle height at 20 DAT (18 cm tall of red pepper), and the spray nozzle should be placed below 30 cm above ground to keep spray drift minimum to red pepper with > 40 cm plant height at 40 DAT.
Weeds are known to cause enormous losses due to their interference in agro ecosystems. Because of environmental and human health concerns, worldwide efforts are being made to reduce the heavy reliance on synthetic herbicides that are used to control weeds. In this regard phytotoxicity of allelochemical sorgoleone, which is a major component of the hydrophobic root exudates of Sorghum bicolor was evaluated in different weed species and also its crop selectivity in greenhouse and field conditions. Sorgoleone strongly inhibited the growth of different weeds by pre-emergence and post-emergence applications both in greenhouse and field conditions. Post-emergence application of sorgoleone on 21-day-old weed seedlings had a greater inhibitory effect than the pre-emergence application. Again, broadleaf weed species were more susceptible than grass species to the application of sorgoleone at both stages of growth. Growth of broadleaf weed species was suppressed by greater than 80% for most of the weed species except a few species and among them the species Rumex japonicus and Galium spurium were completely suppressed at $200{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ sorgoleone. Like greenhouse trial, sorgoleone was more effective for broadleaf weed species followed by sedge and grass weed species in the field condition. The growth inhibition of weeds was slightly lower in field condition compared to greenhouse condition. The crop species like rice, barley, wheat, corn, perilla, tomato, soybean and Chinese cabbage were tolerant to sorgoleone while lettuce and cucumber were slightly susceptible to sorgoleone. Consequently, sorgoleone may be applied to control weeds in organic farms without affecting the growth of crop.
The pattern of rice cultivation in Korea is changing from hand transplanting and machine transplanting into direct-seeding for low input and cost-down practices. However, there are still some obstacles to establish the direct-seeding cultural practices because of poor seedling stand, lodging, and weed infestation. In particular, there were much more and wide weed occurrence in direct-seeding rice as compared with the transplanted rice. Weed occurrence in terms of dry weight of weeds was highest in dry direct-seeded rice followed by sowing an puddled soil, sowing on submerged soil in order as compared with transplanting with infant rice seedling. Echinochloa crux-galli was a common dominant weed with 35~44% distribution in any direct-seeding methods. The dominant weed species were E. crux-galli, Cyperus difformis, C. serotinus, and Ludwigia prostrata in dry-seeded rice. The dominant weed species in water-seeded rice were E. crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, and Monochoria vaginalis. Yield loss of rice due to weeds at weedy condition was 96% in dry direct-seeded rice. In water-seeded rice, yield loss was 61%, whereas yield loss was 40% in machine transplanting with infant rice seedling.
To know the effects of weeding periods (weeding from 12 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding to harvest, and weeding from seeding to 14 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding) and growing conditions such as transparent polyethylene film mulch (P.E. mulch) and bare soil on growth and yield of peanuts, "Yeongho-Tangkong" was planted on May 10, 1984. Under P.E. mulch, the number of weeds was higher, but the weed dry weight was lower than in bare soil by the middle of July. Sixty days after seedings, the length of main stems in weedy check plots was longer, but shoot dry weight was lower compared to weed free plot. In the correlation coefficients between weed dry weight and the shoot dry weight of peanut on July 14, the growth retardation of peanuts due to weeds was showed earlier under P.E. mulch than in bare soil. Shoot dry weight, shelling ratio, number of seeds per pod, 100 pod weight, and seed yield were higher under P.E, mulch compared to bare soil. But weed dry weight, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, and pod yield were similar between P.E. mulch and bare soil. Shoot dry weight of peanuts, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, pod yield, 100 pod weight, 100 seed weight, and seed yield in weed free plots from 28 days after seeding to harvest (28 DAS-Harvest) were higher compared to weed free plots from 42 DAS-Harvest. However, in the weed free plot from seeding to 42 days after seeding seed yield was lower than that of the continuous weeding plot due to lower number of pod bearing branches and number of pods per square meters. When weed was not controlled at the later growth stages of peanuts, reduction in seed yield due to weeds was greater in bare soil than that under P.E. mulch.
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to investigate allelopathic potential of some weed species on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) germination and seedling growth. In the comparison between top(leaves+stems) and root extracts, top extract exhibited greater allelopathic effects on alfalfa germination than that of root. The various weed species extract differently responded to alfalfa test species, WL-320, in terms of allelopathic effect. Top and root aqueous extracts of lambsquarter(Chenopodium album L.), giant foxtail(Setaria faberii Herrm.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), velvetleaf(Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), crabgrass(Digitaria sanguinalis L.), canada thistle(Cirsium arvense L.) and prostrate knotweed(Polygonium aviculare L.) significantly inhibited germination, seedling length, weight, vigor, and rate of germination of alfalfa. The regression slopes of various top extracts showed that velvetleaf(b=3.69) extracts were the most inhibitory, while large crabgrass(b=2.39) extracts had the least allelopathic effect on alfalfa germination. Germination, seedling length and weight of alfalfa were inversely proportional to the concentration of dried velvetleaf extracts. Also, more of the toxic effects were observed from the dried extracts compared to the fresh extracts. Residue of velvetleaf inhibited significantly alfalfa emergence and survival percentage compared to the control. The emergence and survival percentage of alfalfa were 44%, 57% at 1.0% residue treatment, respectively. When weed residues were mixed with silica sand with incubation time, velvetleaf residue most inhibited alfalfa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as incubation time increased. An incubation for 72h caused the greatest inhibition of alfalfa growth. These results demonstrate the different allelopathic activity of weed species extracts on alfalfa and suggest that weed may affect alfalfa growth and development through the inhibitory effects of allelochemicals present in weed tissue.
Differences in weed occurrence was investigated among five types of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. The five types employed were three transplanting cultivations such as conventional hand transplanting, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling and two direct-seedings such as flood direct-seeded rice by pregerminated seed and dry direct-seeded rice by dry seed. Weed specie, occurred varied from 7 to 20, depending on the different cultivation types. Weeds were more diverse in transplanting with l0-day-old seedling than in other transplanting cultivations and in direct-seeding than in transplanting practice. Dominant weed species also varied with cultivation types. In transplanting cultivations Scirpus juncoides Roxb., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., and Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi were dominant, whereas occurrence of annual weeds such as Cyperus difformis L. and Monochoria vaginalis Presl. aside from the three weed species increased in direct-seeded cultivations.
The surveys of weed species in pastures were conducted in Jeju Island, Pyeongchang Gangwon, and Seosan Chungnam throughout 2013, 2014, and 2015 in order to understand the current status of the weed flora in Korean pastures and to utilize the survey data for basic measure of them. From the surveys, 275 species of 52 families including 83 exotic species were identified and classified into 77 species of annuals, 55 species of biennials and 143 species of perennials. Looking regionally, 207 species of 49 families, 62 species of 14 families, and 136 species of 36 families were occurred in Jeju, Pyeongchang and Seosan, respectively. Based on the importance values, the most dominant species was Rumex obtusifolius followed by Artemisia princeps, Trifolium repens, Digitaria ciliaris, Rumex acetosella etc. in order. The dominance of exotic species was the highest in Rumex obtusifolius followed by Trifolium repens, Rumex acetosella, Erigeron annuus etc. According to the surveys of past and present a pasture weed community has been changed, i.e., Erigeron annuus, Artemisia princeps, and Potentilla fragarioides var. major were dominant in 1990 and Artemisia princeps, Trifolium repens and Rumex acetosella were dominant in 2004. On the other hand, the dominant species at the pastures were changed into Rumex obtusifolius, Artemisia princeps, and Trifolium repens in 2015.
