Procedures and Items for Royal Wedding Ceremonies of Princesses on 『Hwasunongju-garyedeungrok(和順翁主嘉禮謄錄)』 (『화순옹주가례등록(和順翁主嘉禮謄錄)』에 나타난 가례 절차와 물목 연구)

  • This article studied the procedures and items used in royal princess weddings by examining "Garyedeungrok(嘉禮謄錄)" which describes Princess Hwasun(和順翁主, 1720-1758)'s wedding in 1732. This was the first wedding by a princess during King Yeongjo(英祖)'s reign. Preparation for the wedding was made based on the previous weddings of royal princesses, but it did not follow the old tradition. The wedding costs were cut down, and it was done in a simpler way than before. However, the simplification of elaborate wedding outfits were not part of this change as ceremonial robes such as No-ui(露衣), Jangsam(長衫) and Chopo(綃袍) were used without much alteration. The wedding ceremony of Princess Hwasun shows the transition process from the royal princess wedding ceremony traditions and rituals in the late 17th century to "Gukhonjeongrye", which emerged and became solidified as a new social norm in the 18th century. A legitimate royal princess and a de facto princess from King's concubine were hardly different when it came to their royal outfitting but the disparity in social status between the two was found in the materials used to make clothes for their respective husbands. Princess Hwasun's wedding procedure shown in "Garyedeungrok" is similar to that of "Gukjo-orye-ui(國朝五禮儀)": Napchae(納采), Nappye(納幣), Chinyeong(親迎), Dongroe(同牢), Hyeongugo(見舅姑), Hyeonsadang(見祠堂), and Seojohyeon(壻朝見). But "Garyedeungrok" deals with the procedures of Gantaek(揀擇), Buma-guanrye(駙馬冠禮), and Seonon(宣醞), which are not included in "Gukjo-orye-ui", and also with the process of preparation for wedding items and the information of related people. However, it is hard to learn about its specific shapes and features because it is often restricted to lists such as a list of clothing. Collecting new materials and an in-depth and succeeding study are required in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract 'the Rite of Passage'from a Korean novel, 'HON-BUL', and to analysis intrinsic meanings and function of the symbols, their personal meanings and social meanings from it. A pragmatical method was used for the analysis of this research. The results were as followings : The meaning of the Rite of Passage and the Costumes had mainly incantatory characters ; son-wish, wealth, amicable relations between a husband and a wife, long life, and perpetual thought. But the amount of grasping of meaning was thought to be depended on the reading ability of readers. Since the Wedding Ceremony and the Funeral Ceremony were described a lot of times in the novel, it was known that they were regarded as very important Rite of Passage in the whole life. The TEXT which were cited from the novel showed that the Rite of Passage was traditionally described as the Birth Ceremony, the Wedding Ceremony (includes the Puberty Ceremony), and the Funeral Ceremony. The analysis of meaning in a novel had an important roll to understand CULTURE, SOCIAL LIFE, and TIMES in a written novel. Therefore a novel is very valuable to analyze them as the DISCOURSE and the TEXT.

  • This study is to investigate the cognition and usage of traditional wedding food in Seoul & Gyeonggi area. It provides the basic suggestions for developing the best wedding culture, upholding the great wedding tradition. People usually prepared traditional wedding food only because they had to do since they thought it was a formal way to do it at a wedding ceremony. However, there should be more important things to be considered. Firstly, to understand the real meaning of traditional wedding food, we need to inform its meaning by starting campaigns on wedding culture or making booklets of traditional wedding food. Secondly, to prepare the right selections of traditional food, we need to simplify traditional wedding food and consider the modern sense of the products. Thirdly, to improve traditional wedding food, we need to develop diverse menu. By doing it, we can efficiently reduce the cost of wedding food.

Interpersonal support, Tension in life changes & Life satisfaction in Urban Housewives (도시주부의 대인적 지지, 생활긴장감 및 만족도)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate interpersonal support, tension in lifechanges & satisfaction. The selected sample is composed of 387 housewives in ChongJoo city. SAS pc program was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Data was analyzed by frequency, F-test, percentage, mean, Duncan's Multiple Range Test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Regression Analysis. Major findings as follows: 1)At wedding & funeral ceremony, kin networks of her parents & parents-in law side were variables to have influence on tension in life changes. And the number of social organization participated were a variable to have influence on the satisfaction. The age of couple, education of couple, duration of marriage, income, family lifecycle, the number of children, pattern of family were variables to influence tension in life changes, but were not variables to influence on the satisfaction. 2) At usual or wedding & funeral ceremony, kin networks of her parents side were variables to influence on instrumental & companionship support. And the number of friends was a variable to influence on companionship & informational support. The number of neighbors was a variable to influence on instrumental, companionship & informational support. The number of social organization participated was a variable to influence on companionship & emotional support. The age of couple, education of couple,income, duration of marriage, family life cycle, number of children, family size, family type were variables to influence on interpersonal support. 3)The relationship between tension and satisfaction in life changes was negative, and between instrumental support and satisfaction was negative also. But between companionship support and satisfaction was positive relationship and between tension of personal &social life and instrumental support was positive relationship. The relationship between tension of marriage life and companionship support was negative and between tension of family life and information support was negative relationships. The received companionship support was lower tension in life changes than not received it. But the received instrumental support was higher tension of personal & social life. The received companionship & informational support was higher satisfaction than not received them. But the received instrumental support was lower satisfaction than not received it. 4) Instrumental & companionship support, at usual kin network of her parents in taw side, at wedding & funeral ceremony kin network of her parents side,were variables to influence on tension in life changes.   • To analyze wedding feast dishes of king and royal prince of Chosun Dynasty (1866, 1906), the author studied historic book Gare Dogam Euigwae, in which the wedding feast dishes of King and Prince in Chosun Dynasty were described. The results obtained from the study were as follows, 1. Dish materials used for wedding ceremony in the year of 1866 was same as that of the year 1749. 2. Dish materials used for wedding ceremony in the year of 1906 was quit different that of the year 1749. 3. Dish materials used for main table(연상(宴床)), second table(좌협상(左挾床)), third table(우협상(右挾床)), and fourth table(면협상(面挾床)) was the same as that of from the year 1651 till 1906. 4. Dish materials used for a small round table(초미(初味)), another table(이미(二味)), and the other table(삼미(三味)) was the same as that of from the year 1749 till 1906. 5. A large boiled beef(대선(大膳)) and a small boiled beef(소선(小膳)) were in the year 1819 and 1906.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the differences of the perception and attitudes between university students and their mothers. Subjects were consisted of 375 university students and 305 mothers living in Chungbuk area. SPSSWIN program was used for data analysis and the frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation and verified t-test, $X^2$ were utilized. It was shown that both of two groups want a modern style for the wedding. And they prefer the weekend and holidays as a wedding day. University students hope that they will be ready for the expense by themselves with a little help from their parents for the shortage of wedding expense.

  • The Purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the urban home-maker's view of homemanagement and the domestic courtesy and ritual (wedding ceremany, ancestral service, funeral rites). The data for this study was obtained from the 661 homemakers who live in Seoul, Busan, Inchon etc. The data were analyzed by the method described below with SPSS Computer programs. Such methods as frequence, percentile, analysis of variance (t-test, one-way ANOVA), Pearson's correlation and Factor analysis, Multiple regression were used. The major results the study can be summaried as follows; 1) As the result of factor analysis about view of homemanagement, 10 factors (which Eigen Value was above 1.0) out of 28 guestions were extracted. 2) In general, it can be said that the urban Homemaker's View of homemanagement varies by age, level of education, religion. 3) The domestic courtesy and ritual (wedding ceremony, ancestral servic, funeral rites) varies by age, level of education, religion. 4) There is a positive relation in analyzing the correlation between the urban homemaker's view of homemanagement and domestic courtesy and ritual (wedding ceremony, ancestral service, funeral rites)(p<.001).

  • This study is made on the royal lady's dress In late Joseon dynasty according to the King Heon-jong and Lady Kyung-bin's Wedding Diary in the year of Jung-mi(1847) and summarised as follows: Girls' full dress was a set of a red skirt, a violet undo. jacket, and a light yellow jacket and a green Gyeon-ma-gi(a kind of top jacket) with he. hair Saeng-meo-ri hanging Do-tu-rak-daeng-gi(a kind of hair ribbon). At the big ceremony, girls wore a green Dang-ui instead of Gyeon-ma-gi. A girl picked up as a royal concubine wore a green Won-sam, which was decorated with gilt letters meaning longevity, patched emblems of gilt letter meaning longevity on the breast and on the back, belted with Bong-dae(a red sash with gilt phoenexes), like a princess's full dress. At the Kyung-bin's installation of Crown Princess and her first greeting ceremony with royal elders, she wore a green Won-sam as a formal dress, which had an embroidered emblem of phoenix, the belt with crystal ornaments, Pae-ok(佩玉), Kyu(圭) of blue jade, Shou(綬) with an phoenix. At a Dong-wrae-yun(drinking ceremony after bride and bridegroom's bowing to each other), she wore the embroidered red Jang-sam as a formal dress. Kyung-bin wore a purple Won-sam with Bong-dae as a full dress for a royal feast. According to the occasions, the same dress was differentiated with ornaments and rotors. Ji-keum-bal was an attire for ordinary ceremony. The attire was equipped with a woven gold green Dang-ui with an emblem of phoenix, a blue gilt underskirt and a red gilt overskirt. No-ui was worn as outdoor clothes. Jang-sam was worn by various classes, so it was differentiated with materials and names according to her class.

A study on Wedding Costume of Korean Nationality in Yanbian China (중국 조선족의 족식연구(I) - 혼례복에 관하여 -)

  • As a part of study examining Korean costume remaining in Yanbian China, this study explored changes in ceremonial clothing for marriage worn by Korean(Chosun race) in Yanbian China. About one hundred years ago, Koreans moved to Yanbian China and had worn traditional clothing for marriage ceremony until before 1940. Data were collected by true interview and field observation while staying in that area. Samo and Dalyung for bridegrooms, Wonsam and Jockdoory for bridegrooms, wonsam and Jockdoory for brides were usual costume for wedding ceremony, however, for couples in inferior conditions of life, Bazy and Jeogory for bridegrooms, yellow Jeogory and red Chima for brides were accepted for ceremonial costume. As western culture came to this area in about 1940, bridegrooms wore western style suit, while brides dress in white Chima, Jeogory and Neowool. To date, Korean brides have worn traditional Chima and Jeogory for marriage ceremony though slight change has occurred in clothing material and in the forms of Chima, Geogory and Neowool. As the pratice reflected the fact that Korean in Yanbian China as established and sustained traditional China as established and sustained traditional costume and Korean identity even in hush socio-cultural environment.

A Research on the Changes of Wedding Dress′ Colors (웨딩드레스 색상의 변천과정 연구)

  • It is quite common today for bride to wear white-colored wedding-dress in wedding ceremony. When does the color date back to? What does the “white” mean? Which other colors had been used for wedding dress and why? This research paper aims to answer those historical questions through literature review. It is found here that the “white” began to be generally accepted for a wedding dress color in the 18th century, and that the color became an official one since the marriage of Queen Victoria's (i.e. 1840). Prior to that, other colors were taken rather than the “white”. In ancient Greece and Roma, “Red” and “Yellow” were used to remove devils or to bring fortune. In medieval society, luxurious wedding dresses were popular and various colors were adopted in order to show up family power among leading classes. The “White” has meant purity of bride since the 18th century. However, two world wars in the 20th century happened to lead some brides in economic difficulty wear “black” colored wedding dress for a practical reason. After the world wars, some light colors such as white, beige, ivory are to be used in wedding dress.
