  • In-flight icing remains as one of the most persistent hazards for aircraft operations. The effect of icing on aircraft performance and safety has to be evaluated during the development and airworthiness certification process. The scaling method is a procedure to determine the scaled test conditions in icing wind tunnels in order to produce the same result as when the reference model is exposed to the desired cloud conditions. In this study, a scaling program is developed to provide an easy-to-use tool to the aero-icing community. The Olsen and Ruff 4th methods are employed for this purpose and the velocity is calculated by matching the dimensionless Weber number. To validate the program, the results are compared with the NASA scaling results. The scaling examples based on FAR (Federal Aviation Regulation) Part 25 Appendix C are also presented. Finally, a validation study using a state-of-the-art icing simulation code FENSAP-ICE is presented.

  • This paper proposes a new multi-level energy recovery sustaining driver for AC PDP(Plasma Display Panel), which solves the problems and maintains the merits of the conventional multi-level sustaining driver. While the conventional circuit improves the hard switching in the Weber circuit, there exist parasitic resonant currents in resonant inductors and Vs/2 sustaining period. Comparing the proposed circuit with the conventional circuit, the number of inductors are reduced by half, the parasitic resonant currents in resonant inductors are eliminated, and the hard switching problem is solved by CIM(Current Injection Method). Moreover the voltages across series-connected switching elements in the full bridge circuit are distributed equally by adopting NPC(Neutral Point Clamping) techniques. And circuit operations of the proposed circuit are analyzed for each mode and the validity is verified by the simulations using PSpice program and experimentation with a prototype drive circuit.

  • In this study, the behavior of water droplet impacting on a thin horizontal wire was visualized by time-delay photography. The impact behavior modes, critical capture speed and trapped mass were analyzed by changing the droplet size, velocity, wire diameter and eccentricity ratio. As the Weber number increased, the hanging, merging, and splitting modes appeared sequentially for the case of central impact, and the hanging and non-splitting modes appeared for the case of off-center impact. The boundary We number of each mode was affected by the diameter ratio. The critical capture speed was affected much by the degree of eccentricity. For all diameter ratios, it was higher for the case of central impact than for off-center impact. The trapped mass was larger for the case of central impact than for off-center impact and it increased with the smaller We number and the larger diameter ratio.

  • The Internet has generated a number of online review sites where dissatisfied consumers can easily articulate their opinions and comments on products or services. Little attention, however, has been directed to investigating the relationship between negative electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and its critical determinants that affect consumers' purchasing behaviors. This study attempts to explore the influence of the key determinants of consumers' negative eWOM behaviors, including their social relationships online. The results show that tie strength is positively associated with the proposed determinants, such as information credibility, external search efforts, and product involvement. Further, we find that perceived risk plays a mediating role in the relationship between consumers' intention to spread eWOM and its key determinants.

  • The critical heat flux of spray cooling were measured on the test surface of 10 mm diameter made by stainless steel. The experiments were carried out for the droplet-flow-rate of $0.00002{\sim}0.003m^3/(m^2s)$ and liquid subcooling temperature of $40{\sim}75^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that the critical heat flux of spray cooling increased remarkably with the increase of droplet-flow-rate. Meanwhile, the effect of liquid subcooling on critical heat flux of spray cooling appeared weakly under the present experimental conditions. In additions, correlation between the dimensionless critical heat flux and Weber number based on droplet-floe-rate was developed for experimental results.

  • A numerical simulation of the binary collision dynamics of water drops for size ratios of 1 and 0.75, for the Weber number range of 5 to 100, and for all impact parameter is reported. Two different types of separating collisions, namely reflexive and stretching separations, are identified. A numerical method is based on a fractional-step method with a finite volume formulation and the interface is tracked with Volume of Fluid(VOF) method, including surface tension. Numerical results for size ratios 1 and 0.75 are reasonablely compared with Ashgriz and Poo's experimental results.

  • Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the binary collisions of nanometer-sized droplets of argon in the presence of a surrounding gas. By systematically varying the droplet size, the impact parameter and the velocity of collision, the outcome of such collisions were examined and they can be classified into coalescence, separation and shattering. If one of the colliding droplets is half or less than the other in diameter, a shattering is not possible to occur. The threshold of impact parameter for a given separation was studied by adjusting the Weber number. Overall nanoscale droplets were more likely to coalesce than the macroscopic sized ones due to their high surface-to-volume ratio.

  • Important characteristics of impinging sprays intersected by a strongly convective gaseous cross flows were experimentally investigated. The breakup processes due to different Weber and Reynolds numbers of liquid and gas streams were visually examined with quantitative measurements of breakup lengths, penetration heights, and droplet sizes. Snapshot images and spay data evidenced that, at lower jet Reynolds number the breakup processes portrays the atomization profiles similar to typical column breakup of single orifice jet. At higher jet Reynolds numbers, disintegration of jet stream is significantly expedited by strong momentum transported from strongly convective gaseous stream. The breakup length and penetration height decreased as the convective flow increase. From the bottom the wall up, the SMD measured the centerline increase. The maximum SMD appeared the top of the SMD distribution

  • This study addresses the behavior characteristics of diesel spray injected on the impinging disk with the room temperature. The models of impinging spray are the stick, the reflect and the wall jet model In the initiative of the fuel injection the impinging spray was the reflect model. because the momentum of droplets was very large. This model developed to the wall jet model according to the time approaches. On the low temperature disk the fuel film was made by the attachment of the droplets with low Weber number. The thickness of impinging spray was increased when the disk approached to the nozzle tip. Mathematical analysis for calculation with the behavior of impinging spray have to consider the reflecting effect and the influence of the fuel film.
