  • The growth of the World Wide Web and web-based applications is creating demand for high performance web servers to offer better throughput and shorter user-perceived latency. This demand leads to widely used cluster-based web servers in the Internet infrastructure. Load balancing algorithms play an important role in boosting the performance of cluster web servers. Previous load balancing algorithms suffer a significant performance drop under dynamic and database-driven workloads. We propose an estimation-based load balancing algorithm with admission control for cluster-based web servers. Because it is difficult to accurately determine the load of web servers, we propose an approximate policy. The algorithm classifies requests based on their service times and tracks the number of outstanding requests from each class in each web server node to dynamically estimate each web server load state. The available capacity of each web server is then computed and used for the load balancing and admission control decisions. The implementation results confirm that the proposed scheme improves both the mean response time and the throughput of clusters compared to rival load balancing algorithms and prevents clusters being overloaded even when request rates are beyond the cluster capacity.

  • As student-centered learning grows, formative peer assessment practices have been universally used in various fields. According to the review of traditional peer assessment practices, the formative peer assessment has five common stages: planning, assessing (giving feedback), receiving feedback, reflection, and revising. As the each stage of traditional formative peer assessment has some weaknesses, the study discusses solutions that are recommended for dealing with the problems by introducing the potential benefits of web-based peer assessment. Then, desirable future trends of web-based peer assessment are suggested. The author hopes that understanding the potential benefits of web-based formative peer assessment will promote the proper use of peer assessment and render positive effect on student learning.

  • This paper is aimed at the development of comprehensive environmental management system, which can be operated on the basis of world wide web. This study has been initiated as a topic of G7 project in 1988, and will be accomplished in 2001. Even thought there should be lots of works remaining to achieve this goal, preliminary products can be summarized as follows : 1) integrated environments information management system, 2) web based control engine, 3) surface water environment management system, 4) subsurface water environment management system, 5) sewer and waterworks management system. The core methodology of the engine is the generalized multidimensional finite element matrices to depict the terms in the analysis of various partial differential equations. Spatial information management system (ArcView) and Visual Basic were extensively employed to construct GUI oriented web based engine. Developed systems were consist with very intense computer codes due to the necessity of combinatory management of environmental problems. The web based engine could be served as a decision tool for the integrated management of environmental projects in Korea.

  • Enterprises as well as central and local governments have tried to apply ubiquitous technology to the actual life on the various types of business and projects. In this paper we develop strategic plan to provide public service on public areas based on needs analysis of public services as well as trend analysis of ubiquitous and web technology. Ubiquitous service model should be based on geospatial web which can incorporate participation and collaboration concepts, as the wire/wireless network system develop rapidly. To achieve this purpose, we suggest the following projects; 1), construction of internet map based on geospatial web technology, 2), development of web contents based on geospatial web, 3), installing ubiquitous equipment, and 4), upgrade Seoul Metropolitan Government's homepage and internet system which can incorporate web 2.0 concepts. Ubiquitous service model should be based on not only development of ubiquitous technology but also needs of consumer such as citizen, enterprises, and public sectors which have an interest in that place. Geospatial web will be the core of development of ubiquitous service models.

  • As the value of B2B integration gets more importance and the business process becomes more complex, BPEL4WS standard has been focused for the solution of the problems which is based on web service technology. Many vendors implement the standard in their systems to integrate B2B and web service based inner-Enterprise Application(EA)s. But there is no way to use the standard to integrate non-web service based EAs, because the standard is designed only for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) over web services. This paper proposes Hybrid Service Orchestration Framework to participate web services and also non-web service based EAs in the business process as a partner using BPEL4WS standard. The framework introduces Hybrid Service Architecture to represent non-web service based EAs as a service, so BPEL4WS could be used to integrate web services and non-web service based EAs. And the framework also introduces Hybrid Service Toolkit to support software level facilities. The paper also introduces Hybrid Orchestration System that is based on Hybrid Service Orchestration Framework.

  • Main content extraction of web pages is widely used in search engines, web content aggregation and mobile Internet browsing. However, a mass of irrelevant information such as advertisement, irrelevant navigation and trash information is included in web pages. Such irrelevant information reduces the efficiency of web content processing in content-based applications. The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic main content extraction method of web pages. In this method, we use two indicators to describe characteristics of web pages: text density and hyperlink density. According to continuous distribution of similar content on a page, we use an estimation algorithm to judge if a node is a content node or a noisy node based on characteristics of the node and neighboring nodes. This algorithm enables us to filter advertisement nodes and irrelevant navigation. Experimental results on 10 news websites revealed that our algorithm could achieve a 96.34% average acceptable rate.

  • Both browsing and retrieval with search engines are major operations that establish the interaction between users and the Web. Although both operations are usually combined to locate information from the Web, recent growth of the Web has overtaken the potential of this conventional interaction. This paper proposes the concept of Retrieve, Browse, and Analyze (RBA)-based interactions, as the improvement of the conventional Retrieve and Browse (RB)-based interaction. The prototype interface based on RBA-based interaction is also presented.

  • As Internet and World Wide Web become more popular in our society, the interests in effective application to the field of rural development and agricultural extension service are increasing. The potential in Web-based agricultural extension service is expressed in many areas, such as agriculture information, Web-based training and education, and virtual rural community for rural development and agricultural extension service. The research on the Web and its related issues has been conducted in many ways, but the interests in the competencies and skills of staff who are in charge of Web developing and managing have not been exposed yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate the important competencies and skills for Web developing and managing for enhancing the effectiveness of rural development and agricultural extension service. Twelve extension service staff and on staff in the extension service support center were interviewed. The results of study showed that there were eight essential competencies; competencies to understand rural community and agricultural extension service, to understand the farmers as Web users, to design and develop effective Web sites, to understand the nature of hypertext, to utilize instruction theories, to absorb new technology, to manage projects, and to utilize external sources. The results of study also showed that there was lack of support systems for Web development and information. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that establishing long-term education and training system for technology, electronic performance support systems, and cooperation with universities and colleges for technology are of particular importance for promoting Web-based extension services.

  • This study sought to examine preservice teachers' beliefs about their intent to use computers and Internet resources in mathematics classrooms. Also, web-based instruction on topics in elementary school mathematics was used to foster teachers' confidence and competence in using instructional technology, thereby promoting positive attitudes toward use of computers and Internet resources in the mathematics classroom. The results indicated that students who participated in the web-based instructions exhibited a significantly (p < 0.05) better attitude toward using computers and web-based resources in teaching mathematics than did students in the control group.
