  • Currently, Reading instruction has a problem that it's separating subject matter and emphasizing only an activities after reading. This study designed a web-based reading instruction system in which teachers, students and teacher librarians can actively participate to help students to develop the integrated reading ability. Existing reading system have been analyzed to find requirement of web-based reading instruction system. Supposed reading instruction system composed of 6 menus, reading guidance ,reading level diagnosis, book selection, reading strategy, reading presentation, reading discussion.

  • In the environment of emphasizing creativity, computer application instruction model is in demand which is developed for the group discussion, enlarging the range of thinking, and creativity. The purpose of this study is to develop a PBL-based computer application instruction model concerning creativity after researching problems during the use of computer education by group. The theoretical background of class model is PBL, and the efficiency and creativity of class is considered while using web-mind map as the tool for the discussion and data sharing. As a result of applying the suggested model to the students enrolled in the production of presentation instruction, it made probabilistic meaningful outcome where complaint with communication, data sharing, role sharing, difference of contribution, excessive run-time and etc. were reduced.

  • Since the e-government has been established, a significant portion of governmental business processes is conducted on the web. There are a large amount of records which are used and maintained only on the web. However, although the web-based governmental records have a great value as national strategic resources and cultural heritages, there is no practical management activity for them. In this context the study discusses the necessity of web-based records information management policies and explores problems of web-based records management policies. As a case study, TNA in the UK and NARA in the US are discussed. Also, the National Archives of Korea and the Presidential Archives are explored. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is conducted against these four cases. Based on the discussion, as a result, the study presents feasible solutions to web-based records management policies in terms of law, system and technology.

Pedagogical Paradigm-based LIO Learning Objects for XML Web Services

  • In this paper, we introduce the sharable and reusable learning objects which are suitable for XML Web services in e-learning systems. These objects are extracted from the principles of pedagogical paradigms for reusable learning units. We call them LIO (Learning Item Object) objects. Existing models, such as Web-hosted and ASP-oriented service model, are difficult to cooperate and integrate among the different kinds of e-learning systems. So we developed the LIO objects that are suitable for XML Web services. The reusable units that are extracted from pedagogical paradigms are tutorial item, resource, case example, simulation, problems, test, discovery and discussion. And these units correspond to the LIO objects in our learning object model. As a result, the proposed model is that learner and instruction designer should increase the power of understanding about learning contents that are based on pedagogical paradigms. By using XML Web services, this guarantees the integration and interoperation of the different kinds of e-learning systems in distributed environments and so educational organizations can expect the cost reduction in constructing e-learning systems.

Multimedia Presentation Authoring and Virtual Collaboration in Medicine

  • Web-based virtual collaboration is increasingly gaining popularity in almost every area in our society due to the fact that it can bridge the gap imposed by time and geographical constraints. However, in medical field, such collaboration has been less popular than other fields. Some of the reasons were timeliness, security, and preciseness of the information they are dealing with. In this paper, we are proposing a web-based distributed medical collaboration system called Virtual Collaboration System for Medicine (VCSM) for medical doctors that meet the needs. The proposed system consists of two parts - multimedia presentation and recordable virtual collaboration. The former supports synchronized multimedia presentation using Synchronous Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL.) It allows synchronization of the contents of a PowerPoint presentation file and a video file. The presentation may be provided to the participants before the discussion begins. Next, in the virtual collaboration stage, participants can use text along with associated symbols during the discussion over the presented medical images. The symbols such as arrows or polygons can be set or removed dynamically to represent areas of interest in digital images using so called layered architecture that separates image layer from annotation layer. XML files are used to record participants' opinions along with the symbols over some particular images

On a Web-Based Home Study in the Regular Lessons of Mathematics Education (정규수업과 연계된 수학과의 웹 기반 가정학습에 대한 연구)

  • In a globalization and information society in the 21st century, the emphasis of education is on producing people who can create intellectual value. To meet the purpose in mathematics education, students should be taught to be able to understand basic logics and principles and exchange mathematical information each other. Also they had better be guided to study on their own at home in an effective way. In reality, however, most of the home study does not go beyond confirming the same homework. It is very difficult for students to plan systematic preparation and review of their lessons and study on their own. Moreover there seems to be no integration between the lessons students receive at school and in private classes. Therefore the need for more systematic home study in relation to school lessons is high to maximize the teaming effect. Studying through Web has little restriction in terms of time and space. Students can collect useful information inexpensively and share their learning assignment with each other. But mathematics education through Web has not yet been developed in such a way as to see a positive result from it. This research intends to develop a web site where students can study mathematics systematically in a self-guided way. The research methods applied included survey, student discussion and online home study. The questionnaires were designed to figure out students'and parents'changes in their concept of mathematics home study. The research also tried to look for ways to cut down the burden of expensive private lessons in mathematics. The student discussions were made up of problem-making and problem-solving. The discussion procedure was analysed so as to check if students used their creativity while they were working. As stated above, the research aims to develop a web site to support effective home study, enhance students' mathematical ability and reduce the burden of private lessons.

  • A fundamental issue to consider when searching Web information is the quality of information itself and of service. If a Quality Information System (QIS) of Digital Library is sought, new measurement criteria and evaluation index for Web information service are required. Reliance on the existing evaluation criteria is not acceptable if data retrieved are not information and the service is only noise to end-user. Applying existing evaluation criteria of online database to Environmental & Energy Engineering Web DB revealed the limitations and provided a practical and case-based information for improvement. No attempt was made to survey comprehensively all of the evaluation methods that could possibly be relevant. Instead, this discussion concentrates on the information service evaluation index being developed in the KDPC Project. The research found that domestic Web-DB service are still woefully insufficient to conduct comprehensive investigations on environmental topics. More qualified and specialized R&D Web information service and the development of new evaluation criteria based on this investigation(research I.) will be discussed in follow-up research II.

An Analysis of Preservice Teachers' On-line Discussion Based on Social Constructivist Learning Theory (사회적 구성주의 학습이론에 기초한 예비 교사의 온라인 토론 분석)

  • In this study, messages from on-line discussions of 28 preservice teachers were analyzed based on social constructivist learning theory. After preliminary discussion session for a week, small group discussions were conducted every single week with different topics during 4 weeks. One transcript with most frequent messages in each topic was selected, and a total of 72 messages were analyzed. Discussion topics were the issues related to the nature of science. The Interaction Analysis Model for Examing Social Construction of Knowledge in Computer Conferencing was used for the analysis. Analysis of the messages indicated that 'sharing information' was the most frequent, and that 'discovering/exploring dissonance' and 'negotiation of meaning/co-construction of knowledge' were the nex. However, messages of 'testing and modification of proposed synthesis' and 'testing and application of newly constructed meaning' were found to be rare. This result indicated that students' interaction through on-line discussion did not reach to the social construction of knowledge.

  • The Gifted need the constructivist loaming environments that reflect his or her cognitive and affective characteristics and needs to exert their potential fully. 'Structural Communication'was designed to encourage creative thinking in learners, allowing them to create an understanding of a topic, not simply memorize facts. It is considered in line with constructivist philosophy and cognitive paradigms. The major purpose of this study is to explore 'Web-Based Structural Communication'program to embody the collaborative loaming based on constructivism. It was applied on high school $2\times2$ matrix teaming for the gifted students. Recently developed computer technology, emerging network facilities, and internet enable us to extend the usefulness and efficiency of 'Structural Communication’Especially web provides not only the discussion environment that is free from space and time constraints and characteristics of leasers, but also the experiences of knowledge construction through the collaborative learning. Through the 'Web-based Structural Communication', the gifted will be able to argue, persuade and share their unique ideas and gradually elaborated ill-structured ideas. The gifted will escape from the tunnel vision of the early time and have multiple perspectives that are more objective and logical. As the result, the gifted are expected to acquire the effect of 'the Zone of Proximal Development'that Vygotsky advocated.

Measuring Discussion Activities in BBS (BBS의 토의활동 측정)

  • Electronic BBS (bulletin board system) Ins been widely recognized as an appropriate medium for exchanging ideas and sharing information asynchronously. The communication ability if BBS is the main reason for utilizing it as a tool for collaborative learning. Researchers in the community reported a number if findings regarding the educational utilization if BBS recently. In this paper, we propose a qualitative method to measure communication activities using BBS so that the complex discussion behaviors of participants can be understood analytically. We propose characteristic vectors to describe discussion behaviors of groups and individuals, which can be conveniently used for characterizing and comparing discussion groups as well as individuals. The interactivity model representing interactive activities shows graphically the degree of inter activity if discussion groups as well as individuals. Also, time dependent measurements are investigated to analyze discussion activities with time. Experiments on the proposed measurements conducted on the Web-based discussion project using BBS demonstrate how measurements can be carried out, how characteristic vectors and inter activity model can be constructed and used.
