A Study on Residents' Participation and the Characteristics of Cohousing in USA (미국 코하우징의 특성 및 주민참여 현황)

  • Since the cohousing idea, originated in Northern Europe, was introduced in the U.S. by architects Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett in the early 1980s, there are recently the largest number of cohousing communities and rapidly expanded in the U.S. So, it is necessary to appreciate the cohousing communities developed in U.S. In this study, we investigated the physical characteristics of cohousing and the methods of its residents' participation by means of a case study on cohousing communities in U.S. and suggested the future direction of the cohousing community. Also, this work could be exploited when the cohousing is introduced to Korea. At first, the general status and characteristics of U.S cohousing was explored using diverse sources such as literature, paper and Web site. And then, the direct visit survey was used to obtain the more exact and specific data about physical aspects and residents' participation in each community. We found that cohousing communities were mostly located in the urban and Rural area, which was founded in the 1990s, and new communities continue to be created in the U.S. Typically, the number of households is from 20 to 30 in one community. The land is generally owned by the community itself and its size is within 10 acres. Communities usually serve optional group meals in the common house at least two or five times a week. Each member's income is separated and the community members should take care of their common properties. The leader of community does not exist and most communities don't have the organization of community members. All cohousing communities use consensus as the basis for group decision-making.

Setting Instructional Goals for Nutritional Education Program Through an Analysis of Problems Identified in Junior/senior High School Students (중 고등학생 대상 영양교육 목표 설정을 위한 영양 관련 문제점 분석)

  • For the purpose of developing 'Web-Based Nutritional Education Program', this study analyzed nutritional problems of junior/senior high school students and set appropriate instructional goals for nutritional education program. Survey questionnaires were distributed from October 21,2002 to October 26, 2002 to a total of 564 students at three junior high schools and five senior high schools located in Seoul. The total number of questionnaires collected and used in our study was 479, which is 84.9% of the total questionnaires distributed. According to the survey results, three student groups (male and female students at junior high schools and female students at senior high schools) had lower than an ideal body weight. In case of their Basal Metabolic Indices (BMI), the female students and junior high school students showed a tendency to be underweight, while the other three student groups were within the normal range. The result of the survey showed that all four groups of students showed a deficiency in nutrient intake of calories, calcium and thiamin when compared with Korean RDA. Particularly, in the case of the female students at senior high schools, the deficiency of iron intake was a problem. The survey about food attitudes and food habits of the students showed that the senior high school students had more problems when compared with their junior high school counterparts (p < .001). Therefore, the instructional goals of nutritional education program were set as follows: 1) To improve the level of understanding and the perception of junior and senior high school students about the importance of a dietary lifestyle. 2) To change food attitudes and nutritional knowledge related to individual dietary 1ifestyle, so as to maintain good health through the enhancement of the students' physical activities. We found out that it is critically important to factor in the existing problems of food attitudes and food habits, as well as nutrient intake among junior and senor high school students when setting objectives for nutritional education programs.   • This study suggest that firms can use online brand communities as an IMC tool to achieve high brand loyalty through marketer-controlled or loyal customer-controlled brand contacts. In this perspective, the online brand community as a marketing communication tool can help the firm in eliciting favorable responses from customers. This study finds that an online brand community, as a critical marketing promotion tool, helps a firm elicit favorable relationship with customers and build strong brand loyalty. In particular, this study suggests several important theoretical and managerial implications. First, this study confirm that "advertising usefulness" is the most powerful and important factor that affects cgerial 's positive emotionomehile "sales promotion usefulness" impacmehin "interactivity" but dies not impacmhin "cgerial iexperience"ltyevent usefulness" impacmehin "cgerial iexperience"but dies not impacmhin "interactivity." How Do South Koreans Perceive Corporate Social Capital and Its Benefits? An Application to Corporations and Community

  • A recent public opinion survey found that the anti-corporate sentiment of South Korean citizens is primarily due to the misbehavior of Korean corporations. South Korean citizens' skepticism of corporations may hinder the democratic and economic development of the country. As a driving force for community development, social capital is considered to enable citizens to collaborate with one another to resolve a shared problem. Specifically, this study pays attention to the relationship among social capital, corporate capacity, and trust, which may perhaps contribute to developing a democratic environment in Korean society. The study aims to explore whether Korean citizens' perceived corporate bonding and bridging social capital affect corporate capacity for collaborative action and trust in corporations. A Web survey of 385 South Koreans was conducted. The findings show that perceived bonding social capital among employees is positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action. Moreover, perceived bonding among employees and bridging social capital between employees and local residents are positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action and trust in corporations. These findings suggest that researchers and practitioners for organizational development and community-building need to enhance corporate social capital.

A Study on the Operational Strategy and the Performance of Internet Web Sites (인터넷 웹사이트의 운영전략과 성과에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we studied the purpose of this paper is like that; the first one is to find the factors associated with operational strategy by variable website types classified into information-providing type, product-providing type and service- providing type by user approach purposes. The second one is to propose the successful operational strategy through analyzing the factors affecting the financial and non-financial performance of websites. A framework of research model including above factors is developed and tested statistically. The data are collected from Internet website experts of 80 Korean firms through survey. The main results of this research are as follows. First, in information-providing websites, the community factor is regarded as the most important factor But for the Improvement of the performance, not only community factor but also user interface, customization, total quality and playfulness factors should be regarded as important factors equally. Second, in product-providing websites, customization, total quality and visual design factors are regarded as important factors. But for the improvement of the performance, community and visual design factors should be regarded as important factors. Third, in service-providing websites, user interface, customization and community factors should be regarded as important factors in order to improve the performance.

  • This paper presents the holistic notion and model of an open social u-learning community, anchored with open content, providing an interactive online study group experience akin to sitting with study buddies on a world-wide campus quad. The interactive social u-learning community design helps conceptualize and maximize advantages of ubiquitous environment in learning. The model is enabled by state-of-the-art web technologies; real-time collaboration technologies for a highly interactive experience; intelligent recommender systems to help learners connect with relevant content and other learners; and mining and analytics to assess learner outcomes. Hence, u-learning design is highly scalable yet interactive and engaging.

A Study on the Actual Utilization of Traditional Knowledge Resources (전통지식 자원의 활용실태 연구)

  • The main purpose of this research was to study and analyze the actual utilization of traditional knowledge resources and to search for methods to activate local communities through utilization of traditional knowledge resources best suited for us. For this study, data listed on the internal web sites during August 2002 to October 2002 were searched and analyzed. In terms of statistical analysis, frequency, percentage, and x$^2$-test were operated using the SPSS 10.0 program. The major results of this study are as follows: 1) Traditional knowledge resources utilized throughout the nation totaled to 8,906 cases. These utilized resources composed of 48.0% of tangible resources, 32.3% of environmental resources, and 19.8% of intangible resources and such utilized resources were in order of life-skill, scenery, ruins and relics, community activity, exhibition, and folklores. 2) Tourism, merchandising, and festival were the major types of utilization of traditional knowledge resources, while education was the relatively minor portion in utilization type. 3) Compound linking of traditional knowledge resources, utilization type, and utilizing body showed links such as life skill-merchandising-civilian, ruins and relics-tourism-government, folklore-festival-civilian, scenery-tourism-government, and exhibition-education-civilian.

A Study on the Composition and Characteristic of Coworking Space (코워킹 공간구성과 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Coworking space is the ideal concept of small companies, freelancers, startups, and entrepreneurs operating out of a shared office space while working independently of one another. The coworkers share the core values of coworking: collaboration, openness, accessibility, sustainability, and community. Little academic research has been completed on the composition of coworking spaces and the businesses that use them. The purpose of this study is to examine the organization and characteristic of coworking space based on domestic and international cases for providing basic data on the coworking space plan. This study examined existing academic literature, media, online sources to assess the environmental background of worldwide coworking space, the current status, conceptualization, and membership plan that can be appled coworking spaces. The case study for coworking space is limited to the space where there is web site that is showed floor plan. Coworking spaces are designed to be environmentally friendly, offering common area with many facilities to encouraging community and collaboration. For creating ideal coworking space, the concept of coworking space must be recognized as a community space for interaction and creativity between people and space. Based on the result of this study, the appropriate zoning, circulation and specific floor plan of coworking space is needed for the next research.

Exploring Community Structure and Function with Network Analysis: a Case Study of Cheonggye Stream (생태계 네트워크 분석을 이용한 생물 군집의 구조와 기능에 대한 연구: 청계천을 사례로)

  • It is important to consider interaction between species in understanding structure and function of the biological community. Current ecological issues such as climate change and habitat loss emphasize the significance of the concept of species interaction in that varying species' interaction across environmental gradients may lead to altered ecological function and services. However, most community studies have focused on species diversity through analysis of quantitative indices based on species composition and abundance data without considering species interactions in the community. 'Ecological network analysis' based on network theory enables exploration of structural and functional properties of ecosystems composed of various species and their interactions. In this paper, network analysis of Cheonggye stream as a case study was presented to promote uses of network analysis on ecological studies in Korea. Cheonggye stream has a simple biological structure with link density of 1.48, connectance 0.07, generality 4.43, and vulnerability 1.94. The ecological network analysis can be used to provide ecological interpretations of domestic long-term monitoring data and can contribute to conserving and managing species diversity in ecosystems.

A Record and Conservation of Cultural Heritages through Web Ecomuseum : the Case of Mountain Mudeung (웹 생태박물관을 활용한 문화유산의 기록과 보존 : 무등산을 중심으로)

  • Ecomuseum which appeared in France in 1968 and widely diffused over the world, is a new type of museum. The purpose of this museum is not to simply possess and exhibit the existing relics, but to discover the locational senses of a territory by in-situ conserving and interpreting its entire natural and cultural heritages, and to plan the participation of its population and the development of its local community. The significance of this museum can be found in the recovery of disappearing collective memories of a territory, the restoration of the cultural identity of its population and the revitalization of a underdeveloped area. As the majority of these museums are fragmented or open air museums, an 'web ecomuseum' which makes the remote offering of informations about whole dispersed heritages and their holistic interpretation possible by digitalizing, recording, conserving, interpreting and utilizing related heritages, is necessary. This paper considers the possibility of web ecomuseum and its constitution contents and methods through the case of Mountain Mudeung area. Especially, in relation to the latter, this paper suggests a plan which consists of selection of own local themes, construction of digital archives, design of web expositions and production of electronic cultural maps.
