  • The actual ground vibrations due to NATM and foundation blasting at Seoul(weathered rock), Pusan(weathered rock) and Youngkwang(quartz andesite) have been measured, and the data were analyzed using reliability index($\beta$) to determinate the vibration equations and the maximum charge weight for efficient blast. These were suggested with the division of ultimate limit state($\beta$=0), serviceability limit state($\beta$=1.28) and safety state($\beta$=3), respectively. The reliability index 0 mean 50% data line obtained by the least squares best-fit line. The reliability index 1.28 and 3 represent bounds below 90% and 99.9% of the data, respectively. In this study, reliability index $\beta$=1.28 with security and economy was suggested. The maximum charge weight equations for efficient blast were obtained in W=(Vc/384.90)1.5151.D3(Seoul), W=(Vc/579.82)1.4706.D3(Pusan). W=(Vc/1654.01)1.3456.D3(Youngkwang), and the blast vibration equatiions in V=385(SD)-1.98(Seoul), V=580(SD)-2.04(Pusan), V=1654(SD)-2.23(Youngkwang), respectively. From this study, inference and analysis methods of vibration equations using reliability theory were established.

  • The ground movements during three. full-scale trial diaphragm wall (DW) panel constructions were monitored and analysed. The DW panels were constructed in reclaimed fill where sedimentary marine deposit and residual weathered soils are being consolidated. The monitoring data showed exceptionally large lateral ground movements of up to 293 mm near a trench due to the DW panel constructions, which is about 0.8$\%$ D, where D is the maximum excavation depth. It was observed that deliberate holding period of the trench resulted in a significant increase in the lateral ground movements of about 50-225$\%$. A pre-treatment of the marine deposit by installing a single line of jet grout columns around the trench prior to the excavation was found to be a very effective way of reducing the ground movements. The measured ground settlements were compared with some relevant case histories. DW panel constructions in sedimentary marine deposit are likely to cause maximum ground surface settlement up to 0.225$\%$ D.

  • The Gum-Ho river basin is one of the densely populated area having more than 35% of the total population and it was also well irrigated since earlier days in the Nackdong river basin. Most of the easily developed source of surface water are fully utilized, and at this moment the basin is at the stage that no more :surface water can be made available under the present rapid development of economic condition. Since surface water supplies from the basin have become more difficult to obtain, the ground water resources must be thoroughly investigated and utilized greatly hereafter. In economic ground of the basin what part could ground water play? In what quantities and, for what uses could it be put? The answer to these questions can be relatively simple;the ground water resources in the basin can be put at almost any desired use and almost anywhere in the basin The area of the basin is at about $2088km^2$ in the middle part of Nackdong river basin and it is located along the Seoul-Pusan express highway. The mean annual rainfall is about 974.7mm, most of which falls from June to September during the monsoon. Accumulated is appeared approximately after every 8 year's accumlated dry period with the duration of 5 years. The water bearing formation in the basin include unconsolidated alluvial deposits in Age of Quaternary, saprolite derived from weathered crystalline rocks, Gyongsang sedimentary formations of the period from late Jurassic to Cretaceouse, and igneouse rocks ranging of the Age from Mesozoic to Cenozoic. The most productive ground water reservoir in the basin is calcareous shale and sandstones of Gyongsang system, which occupies about 66% of the total area. The results of aquifer test on Gyongsang sedimentary formation show that average pumping capacity of a well drilled into the formation with drilling diameter and average depth of $8{\frac{1}{2}}$ inch and 136m is $738m^3/day$ and also average specific capacity of those well is estimated $77.8m^3/D/M$. Total amount of the ground water reserved in the basin is approximately estimated at 37 billion metric tons, being equivalent 18 years total precipitations, among which 7 billion metric tons of portable ground water can be easily utilized in depth of 200 meters.

  • The tension load of the ground anchor inserted in the ground gradually changes over time. In this regard the change of the initial tension load is primarily decreased by the fixation condition of the fixing head and the mechanical characteristics of the tensile material. The subsequent additional tension load is a time-dependent loss mostly due to the fixing conditions of the bonded length and the surrounding ground properties of the field. In this paper, therefore, a measurement system using a relative displacement detector that can relatively easily measure the change of tension load is discussed. As a result of the review, it was confirmed that the results using the relative displacement detector are similar to those of the real scale model test, and it was also confirmed that similar results were obtained with the result of the pull-out test conducted on the ground anchors fixed to weathered rocks condition. In addition, a pull-out test was conducted on the test anchors whose initial tension load loss was relatively large and through this test pull-out behavior of the tension type ground anchors was verified.

  • Two design examples of deep foundations for high-rise buildings on soft ground are introduced in this paper. The first one is a 54-story building in Ho-Chi-Minh city, Vietnam, which was designed to be founded on $2.8m{\times}1.0m$ barrette foundations with approximately 60m to 75m depth. Based on a number of design guides and existing load test data from the construction sites in Ho-Chi-Minh city, the capacity of a barrette foundation in sand or clay layered ground was calculated to be 17.2MN to 27.8MN depending on the installing depth. The second one is a 40-story building in Baku city, Azerbaijan, which was designed to be supported by 2.0m diameter bored pile foundations with approximately 23m depth. As analytical or empirical guides for the local ground conditions were very limited, the design procedure from the SNiP Code, one of Russian specifications, was adopted and used to calculate the pile capacity. The capacity of bored pile foundation in highly weathered soil was expected to be 14.8MN to 15.5MN depending on the boring depth.

  • The anchor is used extensively for a cutting slope, an earth retaining wall, an uplift resistance of sub-structures and so on at civil engineering projects and is classified by aim in use, tendon material, and ground/tension fixing type. It can be distinguished extensively into friction type, bearing type, and complex type by ground fixing type. Generally, bond length of friction type anchor has application to 3~10m depending on the friction-resistance characteristics. In this study, 'DEW(double enlargement wedge) bearing type anchor' of new concept is devised. The bond length is about 0.6~0.8m. It can be used on the ground to have the strength characteristics above it of weathered rock. There are merits which are 'period reduction' and 'cost saving' through the minimum of the boring length. In addition, it is so called environmentally friendly Methods because it can reduce the quantity of carbon dioxide through the reducing drilling machine operation time.

  • In this study, landslide flume tests were performed to analyze characteristics of ground characteristics and landslide occurrence due to rainfall infiltration. As test materials, weathered granite soil and gneiss soil, the most frequent landslides in Korea, were used, and landslides were triggered by heavy rain (Intensity = 200 mm/hr). The measurement sensors were installed with 3 sets at toe, slope, top part and shallow (GL-0.2 m), middle (GL-0.4 m), and deep (GL-0.6 m) depth in the slope and measured at 10 second intervals. After landslide flume tests, the slope stability analysis was performed by applying the unsaturated soil theory based on the change of ground characteristics and compared with actual landslide occurrence from flume test. As a result of the analysis, factor of safety reflected the landslide occurrence from flume test and factor of safety decreased as rainfall infiltration, leading to slope failure. Finally we compared to the factor of safety below 1 and actual landslide occurrence time, the average difference was 1,600 seconds for weathered granite soil and 5,400 seconds for weathered gneiss soil.

  • The rotate penetration pile is a type of displacement pile: the surrounding soil is displaced when installing the pile, and the pile can exert a large bearing power and pullout force. In addition, it uses displaced soil method that does not generate slime, and its applications are increasing in foreign countries owing to the environmentally friendly characteristics such as small noise and vibration. However, mostly driven piles-which are directly driven to the ground, and bored pile- pre-fabricated piles are buried to prebored underground, are used; however, rotate penetration piles still have limited use. Most of the laboratory tests have been carried out until now to identify the support behavior after installation of piles and ground construction, the evaluating the support behavior is lacking due to the rotation intrusive process of the rotate penetration piles. Therefore, this study used indoor experiments simulating rotation intrusive process in weathered soil, to evaluate the bearing power behavior for the weathered soil, varying the diameter of the helical bearing plates, helical bearing plate spacing, number of the helical bearing plates, and helical bearing plate specifications. As the outcome of this study, the helical pile bearing power evaluation results, change in bearing power in accordance with main specifications, and review on the comparative analysis with the existing theories were provided.

  • In this paper bearing capacity and safety margin of shallow foundation on weathered soil ground against shear failure by using current design method of allowable stress design (ASD), load resistance factor design (LRFD) based on reliability analysis and partial safety factor design (PSFD) in Eurocode were estimated and compared to each other. Results of the plate loading test used in construction and design were collected and analysis of probability statistics on soil parameters affecting the bearing capacity of shallow foundation was performed to quantify the uncertainty of them and to investigate the resistance bias factor and covalence of ultimate bearing capacity. For the typical sections of shallow foundation in domestic field as examples, reliability index was obtained by reliability analysis (FORM) and the sensitivity analysis on soil parameters of probability variables was performed to investigate the effect of probability variable on shear failure. From stability analysis for these sections by ASD, LRFD with the target reiability index corresponding to the safety factor used in ASD and PSDF, safety margins were estimated respectively and compared.
