The study of the calculation of energy consumption load for heating and cooling in building using the Laplace Transform solution

  • The Laplace Transform solution is used as a mathematical model to analyse the thermal performance of the building constructed using different wall materials. The solution obtained from Laplace Transform is an analytical solution of an one dimensional, linear, partial differential equation for wall temperature profiles and room air temperatures. The main purpose of the study is showing the detail of obtaining solution process of the Laplace Transform. This study is conducted using weather data from two different locations in Korea: Seoul, Busan for both winter and summer conditions. A comparison is made for the cases of an on-off controller and a proportional controller. The weather data are processed to yield hourly average monthly values. Energy consumption load is well calculated from the solution. The result shows that there is an effect of mass on the thermal performance of heavily constructed house in mild weather conditions such as Busan. Building using proportional control experience a higher comfort level in a comparison of building using on-off control.

Temperature and humidity effects on behavior of grouts

  • Grouts compared to other material sources, could be highly sensitive to cold weather conditions, especially when the compressive strength is the matter of concern. Grout as one the substantial residential building material used in retaining walls, rebar fixation, sidewalks is in need of deeper investigation, especially in extreme weather condition. In this article, compressive strength development of four different commercial grouts at three temperatures and two humidity rates are evaluated. This experiment is aimed to assess the grout strength development over time and overall compressive strength when the material is cast at low temperatures. Results represent that reducing the curing temperature about 15 degrees could result in 20% reduction in ultimate strength; however, decreasing the humidity percentage by 50% could lead to 10% reduction in ultimate strength. The maturity test results represented the effect of various temperatures and humidity rates on maturity of the grouts. Additionally, the freeze-thaw cycle's effect on the grouts is conducted to investigate the durability factor. The results show that the lower temperatures could be significantly influential on the behavior of grouts compared to lower humidity rates. It is indicated that the maturity test could not be valid and precise in harsh temperature conditions.

Design of Free-space Optical Communication Terminal Considering for Korean Domestic Weather Conditions (국내 기상 조건을 고려한 자유공간 광통신 단말기 설계)

  • Modern military operations rely heavily on broadband communication and data transmission. Recently, the rising use of intelligent unmanned technology necessitates more frequencies. Free-space optical(FSO) communication can offer high-data-rate communications with high security and no need for licensing. Therefore, the FSO communication holds significant interest and potential in the defense industry. In this paper, we present design of a FSO communication terminal taking Korean domestic weather conditions into account. The domestic atmospheric attenuation is analyzed using several models and two-year meteorological information for a city in Korea, and this analysis is utilized to design the FSO communication terminal. The design results were verified using an FSO communication test bed, and we achieved an Ethernet bandwidth of approximately 1.86 Gbps at a distance of 1.3 km with the optical amplifier output power of the test bed set to about 20 dBm.

  • The specific feature of trains as a means of transportation is that, on one side, at once they can carry big loads but, at the same time, if an accident occurs, it potentially leads to many human casualties or big material losses. Especially, train accidents caused by bad weather conditions result in many fatal losses of human lives and property. In Korea many railways run either in mountainous areas or along rivers thus making them especially susceptible to natural hazards. The types of damages inflicted by heavy rains resulting from rapidly changing meteorological conditions are diverse; and not only their scope is big but also they repeat regularly. Consequently, this study analyses the reasons why such effects of heavy rains on the railway conditions, damage to the railways caused by heavy rains or cases of stone fall as well as other types of accidents are not avoided. Study also, on the basis of laws related to movement in poor weather conditions and specifics of train braking, identifies systematic and technical problems and suggests and emphasizes new complex measures on their prevention.

A study on cabbage wholesale price forecasting model using unstructured agricultural meteorological data (비정형 농업기상자료를 활용한 배추 도매가격 예측모형 연구)

  • The production of cabbage, which is mainly cultivated in open field, varies greatly depending on weather conditions, and the price fluctuation is largely due to the presence of a substitute crop. Previous studies predicted the production of cabbage using actual weather data, but in this study, we predicted the wholesale price using unstructured agricultural meteorological data on the web. From January 2009 to October 2016, we collected documents including the cabbage on the portal site, and extracted keywords related to weather in the collected documents. We compared the forecast wholesale prices of simple models and unstructured agricultural weather models at the time of shipment. The simple model is AR model using only wholesale price, and the unstructured agricultural weather model is AR model using unstructured agricultural weather data additionally. As a result, the performance of unstructured agricultural weather model was has been found to be more accurate prediction ability.

Analysis of Sea Clutter Removal Capability in a Weather Radar Based on a Vertical Phased Array Antenna (수직 위상 배열 안테나 기반 기상 레이다에서의 해수면 클러터 제거 성능 분석)

  • Many short range weather radars with the low elevation search capability are needed for analysis and prediction of unusual weather changes or rainfall phenomena which occurs regionally. However, due to the characteristics of low elevation electromagnetic wave beam, it is highly probable that the received weather signals of these radars are contaminated by the ground and sea clutter. Since most of ground clutter appears around the very narrow low Doppler frequency region, it is somewhat easy to separate. However, the sea clutter removal is very difficult since it can occupy the broad Doppler frequency region according to weather conditions. Therefore, in this paper, the sea clutter removal capability is analyzed for a phased array weather radar which use vertical array elements for electronic elevation beam steering. Also, it is shown that the sea clutter removal can be achieved appropriately using the receiver beam forming technology in a phased array antenna.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a method to support customized weather and environmental information services for the successful operation of winter sporting events. First, individual in-depth interviews and surveys were conducted with athletes, coaching staffs and experts related to the competition for 10 different winter sports for analysis of their needs. We conducted face-to-face survey and survey considering the training schedule and situation of experts. The recorded voice file was converted into word text, and extracted the weather and environmental information elements embedded in the opinions of the research participants based on literature reviews and data. The findings are expected to provide basic data on the weather conditions required to support specialized weather information for future large winter sports events, including the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Classification of Freeway Traffic Condition by the Impacts of Road Weather Factors (도로기상요인의 영향에 따른 고속도로 교통상황 유형 분류)

  • The purpose of this paper is to classify the traffic condition in freeway by the impacts of road weather. The factor analysis showed that weather factors, which are considered as influential, are identified as weather condition (rain or clear), temperature and sight distance with RWIS and VDS data in Seohae bridge used. The result of ANOVA shows that weather is dividedinto clear and rainy; temperature into below and equal or above $5^{\circ}C$ and sight distance into below or equal or above 10km. Based on those factors, the freeway traffic condition has been classified as five different types. The flow-speed model for each traffic conditions was proposed, which was not significant due to the lack of smaple data. Although not sufficient, the methodology to categorize traffic situation model presented in this paper may shed light on the idea for the future and can be used for proper traffic management for each weather condition.

Effects of Local Climatic Conditions on the Early Growth in Korean White Pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) Stands -Relation between Annual Increment and Local Climatic Conditions- (지역별 잣나무 초기생장에 미치는 미기후의 영향 - 연년생장과 미기후와의 관계-)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of local climatic conditions on the annual increment of Korean white pine planted in Gapyung and Yaungdong. For this, stand variables such as mean DBH, mean height, basal area per hectare, and volume per hectare by stand age were measured and summarized for each locality. Based on these statistics, annual increments for 8 years from stand age 10 to 18 were calculated for each of stand variables. A topoclimatological technique which makes use of empirical relationships between the topography and the weather in study sites was applied to produce normal estimates of monthly mean, maximum, minimum temperatures, relative humidity, precipitation, and hours of sunshine. Then, the yearly climatic variables from 1990 to 1997 for each study site were derived from the spatial interpolation procedures based on inverse- distance weighting of the observed deviation from the climatic normals at the nearest 11 standard weather stations. From these estimates, 17 weather variables such as warmth index, coldness index, index of aridity etc., which affect the tree growth, were computed on yearly base for each locality. The deviations of measured annual increments from the expected annual increments for 8 years based on yield table of Korean white pine were then correlated with and regressed on the yearly weather variables to examine effects of local climatic conditions on the growth. Gapyung area provides better conditions for the growth of Korean white pine in the early stage than Youngdong area. This indicates that the conditions such as low temperature, high relative humidity, and large amount of precipitation provide favor environment for the early growth of Korean white pine. A ccording to the correlation and regression an analysis using local climatic conditions and annual increments, the growth pattern of Gapyung area corresponds to this tendency. However, it was found that the relationship between annual increments and local climatic conditions in Youngdong area shows different tendency from Gapyung. These results mean that the yearly growth pattern could not sufficiently be explained by climatic conditions with high variance in yearly weather variables. In addition, the poor growth in Youngdong area might not only be affected by climatic conditions, but also by other environmental factors such as site quality.
