Rubber Compounds with High Gas Barrier Property by Mixing Nylon 6 to Maleic Anhydride Grafted ENR 50 (무수 말레인산으로 그래프트된 ENR 50에 Nylon 6를 혼합한 기체 고차단성 고무 배합물)

  • The ENR 50 having the lowest gas permeability was blended with Nylon 6 which exhibits superior gas permeability, excellent wear resistance by using a twin-screw extruder. The blended materials showed the increased gas barrier property and physical properties, but did not yield a great synergistic effect due to low dispersion of Nylon 6 to ENR 50. To improve dispersion of Nylon 6 in the rubber matrix, maleic anhydride (MAH) was grafted to ENR 50. The grafting reaction between MAH and ENR 50 was evidenced using IR spectroscopy. The grafted and blended materials, ENR 50- g-MAH/Nylon 6 compounds, resulted in an enhanced gas barrier property and physical properties compared with compounds without MAH. The compound at 5 phr of MAH showed the highest crosslinking density and the best performances.

Mechanical Stability of TiN and DLC Coated Instrument of Pedicle Screw System (TiN 및 DLC 코팅된 척추경나사못시스템 수술기구의 기계적 안정성 분석)

  • Durability of instrument is one of the most important factor to ensure accurate treatment and decrease failure for the orthopedic surgical operation. Normally, a set-screw driver tip has been processed with hard coating for their higher durability and wear resistance. And several surface modification methods were obtained such as titanium nitride (TiN) coating, diamond like carbon coating, other nitriding, and etc. In this study, we have surface modified on set-screw driver tip with TiN and DLC, investigated whether the TiN and DLC coatings affect the mechanical properties and durability of the set-screw driver tip in the pedicle screw system. The surface morphologies were observed with scanning-electron microscopy (SEM), and the static/dynamic torsional properties were investigated with universal testing machine based on ASTM F543. Coating thickness of each coatings were commonly around $1^{\circ}C$. Static torsional stiffness, and ultimate torque values for DLC and TiN coated samples were significantly higher than those of non-coated sample by the pared T-test. Surface morphology of after the dynamic torsional test was more clean with less scratch or friction traces from DLC coating than that of TiN coating and non-coated sample.

A Study on the Physical Properties and Coating of Metal Surface Using Traditional Lacquer Technique (전통 옻칠 기법을 이용한 금속표면 코팅 및 물성 연구)

  • This study uses traditional lacquer techniques to coat the metal surface and evaluates its physical properties to check the applicability of the lacquer coating. For this purpose, a total of six specimens were produced by setting the variation conditions for the number of times (1, 2, 3) and the heating temperature (120℃, 150℃) using SS275 metal(60*60 mm) and 'Wonju lacquer'. For analysis, chromaticity measurements, contact angle/surface energy measurements, Chemical Resistance, and cross-cut tests were used. The analysis showed that the corrosivity was improved and the adhesion of lacquer to the metal surface was excellent. There was no significant change in contact angle/surface energy. Also, there was no significant difference in color. Through this study, it was confirmed that lacquer on metal surfaces improves waterproofing and has a anticorrosion effect. We could also check the proper number of lacquer and heating temperature. Additional physical characteristics such as hardness and wear rate should be studied. It is also necessary to study how lacquer can be painted with a certain thickness.

  • Metal matrix composites (MMCs) were widely used in various industries, due to the excellent properties: high strength, stiffness, wear resistance, hardness, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, etc. With additive manufacturing (AM) technology rapidly developed, AM MMCs have been actively investigated thanks to the cost- and time-saving manufacturing. However, several issues still need to be addressed before fabricating AM MMCs. Here, several types of MMCs were introduced and MMCs' design methods to tackle the issues were suggested in a powder bed fusion (PBF) technique. The paper could come up with a guideline for the material and process design of MMCs in the PBF technique.

High temperature properties of surface-modified Hastelloy X alloy (표면처리에 따른 Hastelloy X 합금의 고온물성)

  • Surface treatments and their effects on high temperature properties for the Hastelloy X, which is a promising candidate alloy for high temperature heat-transport system, have been evaluated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods using an arc discharge and a sputtering, were applied, respectively. In addition, a different surface treatment method of the diffusion coating by a pack cementation of Al (aluminiding) was also adopted in this study. To achieve enhanced thermal oxidation resistance at $1000^{\circ}C$ by suppressing the inhomogeneous formation of thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region, a study for the surface modification methods on the morphological and structural properties of Hastelloy X substrates has been conducted. The structural and compositional properties of each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ under air and He environment. The results showed that the Al diffusion coating showed the more enhanced high temperature properties than the overlay coatings such as the suppressed thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation and lower wear loss.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a convenient term to indicate the compositions of the various forms of amorphous carbon (a-C), tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), hydrogenated amorphous carbon and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (a-C:H and ta-C:H). The a-C film with disordered graphitic ordering, such as soot, chars, glassy carbon, and evaporated a-C, is shown in the lower left hand corner. If the fraction of sp3 bonding reaches a high degree, such an a-C is denoted as tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), in order to distinguish it from sp2 a-C [2]. Two hydrocarbon polymers, that is, polyethylene (CH2)n and polyacetylene (CH)n, define the limits of the triangle in the right hand corner beyond which interconnecting C-C networks do not form, and only strait-chain molecules are formed. The DLC films, i.e. a-C, ta-C, a-C:H and ta-C:H, have some extreme properties similar to diamond, such as hardness, elastic modulus and chemical inertness. These films are great advantages for many applications. One of the most important applications of the carbon-based films is the coating for magnetic hard disk recording. The second successful application is wear protective and antireflective films for IR windows. The third application is wear protection of bearings and sliding friction parts. The fourth is precision gages for the automotive industry. Recently, exciting ongoing study [1] tries to deposit a carbon-based protective film on engine parts (e.g. engine cylinders and pistons) taking into account not only low friction and wear, but also self lubricating properties. Reduction of the oil consumption is expected. Currently, for an additional application field, the carbon-based films are extensively studied as excellent candidates for biocompatible films on biomedical implants. The carbon-based films consist of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, which are biologically harmless as well as the main elements of human body. Some in vitro and limited in vivo studies on the biological effects of carbon-based films have been studied [$2{\sim}5$].The carbon-based films have great potentials in many fields. However, a few technological issues for carbon-based film are still needed to be studied to improve the applicability. Aisenberg and Chabot [3] firstly prepared an amorphous carbon film on substrates remained at room temperature using a beam of carbon ions produced using argon plasma. Spencer et al. [4] had subsequently developed this field. Many deposition techniques for DLC films have been developed to increase the fraction of sp3 bonding in the films. The a-C films have been prepared by a variety of deposition methods such as ion plating, DC or RF sputtering, RF or DC plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECR-CVD), ion implantation, ablation, pulsed laser deposition and cathodic arc deposition, from a variety of carbon target or gaseous sources materials [5]. Sputtering is the most common deposition method for a-C film. Deposited films by these plasma methods, such as plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) [6], are ranged into the interior of the triangle. Application fields of DLC films investigated from papers. Many papers purposed to apply for tribology due to the carbon-based films of low friction and wear resistance. Figure 1 shows the percentage of DLC research interest for application field. The biggest portion is tribology field. It is occupied 57%. Second, biomedical field hold 14%. Nowadays, biomedical field is took notice in many countries and significantly increased the research papers. DLC films actually applied to many industries in 2005 as shown figure 2. The most applied fields are mold and machinery industries. It took over 50%. The automobile industry is more and more increase application parts. Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Current Status, Recent Research and Future Directions

  • The increasing interest in light weight materials coupled to the need for cost -effective processing have combined to create a significant opportunity for aluminum P/M. particularly in the automotive industry in order to reduce fuel emissions and improve fuel economy at affordable prices. Additional potential markets for Al PIM parts include hand tools. Where moving parts against gravity represents a challenge; and office machinery, where reciprocating forces are important. Aluminum PIM adds light weight, high compressibility. low sintering temperatures. easy machinability and good corrosion resistance to all advantages of conventional iron bm;ed P/rv1. Current commercial alloys are pre-mixed of either the AI-Si-Mg or AL-Cu-Mg-Si type and contain 1.5% ethylene bis-stearamide as an internal lubricant. The powder is compacted in closed dies at pressure of 200-500Mpa and sintered in nitrogen at temperatures between $580~630^{\circ}C$ in continuous muffle furnace. For some applications no further processing is required. although most applications require one or more secondary operations such as sizing and finishing. These sccondary operations improve the dimension. properties or appearance of the finished part. Aluminum is often considered difficult to sinter because of the presence of a stable surface oxide film. Removal of the oxide in iron and copper based is usually achieved through the use of reducing atmospheres. such as hydrogen or dissociated ammonia. In aluminum. this occurs in the solid st,lte through the partial reduction of the aluminum by magncsium to form spinel. This exposcs the underlying metal and facilitates sintering. It has recently been shown that < 0.2% Mg is all that is required. It is noteworthy that most aluminum pre-mixes contain at least 0.5% Mg. The sintering of aluminum alloys can be further enhanced by selective microalloying. Just 100ppm pf tin chnnges the liquid phase sintering kinetics of the 2xxx alloys to produce a tensile strength of 375Mpa. an increilse of nearly 20% over the unmodified alloy. The ductility is unnffected. A similar but different effect occurs by the addition of 100 ppm of Pb to 7xxx alloys. The lend changes the wetting characteristics of the sintering liquid which serves to increase the tensile strength to 440 Mpa. a 40% increase over unmodified aIloys. Current research is predominantly aimed at the development of metal matrix composites. which have a high specific modulus. good wear resistance and a tailorable coefficient of thermal expnnsion. By controlling particle clustering and by engineering the ceramic/matrix interface in order to enhance sintering. very attractive properties can be achicved in the ns-sintered state. I\t an ils-sintered density ilpproaching 99%. these new experimental alloys hnve a modulus of 130 Gpa and an ultimate tensile strength of 212 Mpa in the T4 temper. In contest. unreinforcecl aluminum has a modulus of just 70 Gpa.

Physical Properties Testing and Practical Applications of Restoration Materials Made with Extra Hard Stone and Metakaolin (초경석고와 메타카올린 혼합재료의 물성실험 및 적용)

  • Ceramic cultural artifacts restored with gypsum-based materials are prone to decay over time due to gypsum's natural absorption and release of atmospheric moisture, often leading to distortion and peeling of painted layers. This study proposes a new restoration material which utilizes extra hard stone, significantly superior in strength to regular gypsum. In order to enhance its physical properties and make it suitable for restoration of ceramics, extra hard stone is mixed with metakaolin. This mixture far surpasses regular gypsum in compressive strength(119MPa vs. 26MPa) while also maintaining a much lower wear rate(0.88% vs. 2.53%). Furthermore, the water absorption rate(2.9%) of the mixed material is over five times lower than that of regular gypsum(17.2%). When examined using a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope), this mixture also proved superior to extra hard stone in terms of hardened density. The addition of metakaolin increases the mixture's strength and water resistance over that of extra hard stone and also improves its surface density, making it ideal for the restoration of ceramics. It has already been used to repair ceramic objects in the Museum's collection: Clay basin(sinan 18892), Buncheong ware bottle with incised peony design(jubsu 2034), Buncheong ware bowl with chrysanthemum(jubsu 1730). Results thus far have shown the mixture to be easy to inject and layer as well as harden into an even surface, which allows for smooth application of paint for color matching.

Evaluation of the Corrosion Property on the Welded Zone of Cast Steel Piston Crown with Types of Electrode (용접재료 별 주강 피스톤 크라운 용접부위의 부식 특성에 대한 평가)

  • Wear and corrosion of the engine parts surrounded with combustion chamber is more serious compared to the other parts of the engine because temperature of the exhaust gas in a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. Therefore, an optimum repair weldment as well as an available choice of the base metal for these parts are very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. It reported that there was an experimental result for repair weldment on the forged steel which would be generally used with piston crown material, however, it is considered that there is no study for the repair weldment on the cast steel of piston crown material. In this study, four types of electrodes such as 1.25Cr-0.5Mo, 0.5Mo Inconel 625 and 718 were welded with SMAW and GTAW methods on the cast steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% $H_2SO_4$ solution. In the cases of Inconel 625, 718, the weld metals and base metals exhibited the best and worst corrosion resistance respectively, however, 1.25Cr-0.5Mo and 0.5Mo indicated that corrosion resistance of the base metal was better than the weld metal. And the weld metal welded with electrodes of Inconel 625 revealed the best corrosion resistance among the electrodes, and Inconel 718 followed the Inconel 625. Hardness relatively also indicated higher value in the weld metal compared to heat affected zone and base metal. In particular, Inconel 718 indicated the highest value of hardness compared to other electrodes in the heat affected zone.

A STUDY ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF TiN, ZrN AND WC COATED FILM ON THE TITANIUM ALLOY SURFACE

  • Statement of problems. In an attempt to reduce screw loosening, dry lubricant coatings such as pure gold or tefron have been applied to the abutment screw. However, under repeated tightening and loosening procedures, low wear resistance and adhesion strength of coating material produced free particles on the surface of abutment screw and increased frictional resistance resulting in screw tightening problems. Purpose. The aim of this study was to compare friction coefficient, adhesion strength, vickers hardness and evaluate coating surface of titanium alloy specimens coated with TiN(titanium nitride), ZrN(zirconium nitride) and WC(tungsten carbide). Material and method. Titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) discs of 12mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness divided into 4 groups. TiN, ZrN and WC was coated for the specimens of 3 groups respectively, and those of 1 group were not coated. Each group was made up of 4 specimens. In this study, sputtering method was used among the PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) techniques available for TiN, ZrN and WC coatings. Friction coefficient, adhesion strength, vickers hardness and coating surface of 4 groups were measured. Results. 1. For all three coating conditions, friction coefficient was significantly decreased. Especially, ZrN coated surface showed the lowest value. $TiN(0.39{\pm}0.02)$, $ZrN(0.24{\pm}0.01)$, $WC(0.31{\pm}0.03)$. 2. TiN coating showed the highest adhesion strength, however ZrN coating had the lowest value. $TiN(25.3N{\pm}1.6)$, $ZrN(14.8N{\pm}0.6)$, $ WC(18.4N{\pm}0.7)$. 3. Vickers hardness of all three coatings was remarkably increased as compared with that of none coated specimen. TiN coating had the highest Vickers hardness, however WC coating showed the lowest value. $TiN(1865.2{\pm}33.8)$, $ZrN(1814.4{\pm}18.6)$, $WC(1008.5{\pm}35.9)$. 4. The ZrN or WC coated specimen showed a homogeneous and smooth surface, however the rough surface with defects was observed for TiN coating. Conclusions. When TiN, ZrN and WC coating applied to the abutment screw, frictional resistance would be reduced, as a result, the greater preload and prevention of the screw loosening could be expected.
