A study has been investigated on the effect of mechanical properties (tension strength, rotary bending fatigue strength, wear resistance, hardness) according to the carbide particle size variation by the treatment of 1) quenching tempering, and 2) quenching, subzero treatment and tempering. The material used in this investigation was a typical bearing steel, high C high Cr, AISI E 52100. The result obtained in this study were as follows : (1) Finer the carbide particle size increasing the hardness and retained austenite in same quenching condition. (2) Finer the carbide particle size reduced the tension and rotary bending fatigue which were resulted from austenite grain growth and carbide precipitation on grain boundry that induced by carbide refine heat treatment. (3) Finer the carbide particel size increasing the wear resistance which were resulted by uniform distribution of carbide and increased hardness induced by microstructural uniform hardenability of matrix. (4) When the carbide particles were refinded, subzero treatment is effective only wear resistance and hardness.
Surface layer properties such as composition, phase, hardness, and oxide layer condition are very important if the main failure mechanism of metals is wear. Generally, stable and dense oxide layers are known to decrease the wear rate of metals by prohibition of metallic junction occurred between bare metals. Addition of Si above 4 wt% to DCI(Ductile Cast Iron) is reported to enhance the significant oxidation resistance by forming the silicon-rich surface layer which inhibits further oxidation. And addition of up to 2 wt% Mo to high Si ductile iron produces significant increases in high temperature tensile strength, creep strength, thermal fatigue resistance and oxidation resistance. High pressure wear characteristics of unalloyed DCI(Ductile cast Iron), 4.46 wt% Si ductile iron, 4.3 wt% Si-0.52 wt% Mo ductile iron were investigated through unlubricated pin-on-disc wear test. Wear test was carried out at speed of 23m/min, under pressure of 3 MPa and 3.3 MPa. Wear surfaces of each specimen were observed by SEM to determine the wear mechanism under high pressure wear condition. Addition of Si 4.46 wt% severely deteriorated wear property of ductile iron compared to unalloyed DCI. But combined addition of Si 4.3 wt%andMo0.52wt%decreasedthefrictioncoefficient(${\mu}$)ofductileironsandremarkablydelayedthemild-severeweartransition.
Reaction-bonded SiC-Si material was fabricated by infiltration of Si melt into a mixture of $\alpha$-SiC and carbon at 175$0^{\circ}C$ under the vacuum atmosphere. Wear properties were analyzed by ball-on-plate wear tester, changing loading weight, sliding speed, sliding time and atmosphere, Results showed that the friction coefficient was decreased with increasing load and sliding velocity. The lowest friction coefficient of 0.05 was obtained under an oil atmosphere. The analysis of the wear surface indicated that the areas wehre particles were pulled out and where free silicon particles worn out preferentially serve as liquid reservoirs to decrease the wear resistance.
In recent times the potential application of the high speed steel produced by HIP process for wear resistant and cutting materials are increasing. In this work the microstructure of Anval 30 produced by HIP process was investigated and the effect of WC, TiC addition on microstructure formation and wear properties were studied. After HIP process at 1150 $^{\circ}C$, the original feature of spherical raw powders was not removed and consequently, nonuniform microstructure was formed. However the WC added by simple powder mixture incereased the sinterbility of high speed steel and uniform microstructure formed. The wear characteristics of Anval 30 with carbide addition were tested at RT and $600^{\circ}C$. The uniform microstructure played an more important role in wear resistance as compared with the hardness.
In the present article, silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were exploited to improve the tribological and mechanical properties of vinyl ester/glass fiber composites. To the best of our knowledge, there hasn't been any prior study on the wear properties of glass fiber reinforced vinyl ester SiO2 nanocomposites. The wear resistance is a critical concern in many industries which needs to be managed effectively to reduce high costs. To examine the influence of SNPs on the mechanical properties, seven different weight percentages of vinyl ester/nano-silica composites were initially fabricated. Afterward, based on the tensile testing results of the silica nanocomposites, four wt% of SNPs were selected to fabricate a ternary composite composed of vinyl ester/glass fiber/nano-silica using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding. At the next stage, the tensile, three-point flexural, Charpy impact, and pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the ternary composites. The fractured surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images after conducting previous tests. The most important and interesting result of this study was the development of a nanocomposite that exhibited a 52.2% decrease in the mean coefficient of friction (COF) by augmenting the SNPs, which is beneficial for the fabrication/repair of composite/steel energy pipelines as well as hydraulic and pneumatic pipe systems conveying abrasive materials. Moreover, the weight loss due to wearing the ternary composite containing one wt% of SNPs was significantly reduced by 70%. Such enhanced property of the fabricated nanocomposite may also be an important design factor for marine structures, bridges, and transportation of wind turbine blades.
Boriding is one of the chemical methods to achieve the case hardening of steel as well as nitriding or carburizing. The surface layer of the borided steel shows higher hardness and exhibits better resistance to corrosion or fatigue than the nitrided or carburized steel. The great majority of previous studies were confined to mild steel or some alloy steel. To enlarge the application, ductile cast iron (DCI) as a material for boriding has been tried in this study. Thus, sliding wear test has conducted using a pin-on-disc machine to compare between borided DCI and mild steel in fluidized bed furnace. The results show that the wear resistance of borided DCI is improved. Especially it is more efficient in the case of occurence of the mechanical wear.
It is very important to obtain wear resistant ductile iron by adding more economical alloying elements. In this study, 10 heat of Mg-treated ductile iron were made according to Sb content (0-0.1% Sb). Each melt was tasted to 30 ${\o}test$ bars in $CO_2$ mold under the same condition and inspected wear characteristics, mechanical properties and microstructures. The results obtained from this study are as follows; 1. It is confirmed that Sb should be a simple and useful additive for improving wear resistance in ductile iron. 2. Hardness of ferrite and pearlite is improved with increasing Sb amount in ductile iron. 3. For ductile iron, the recommended ladle addition of Sb amount is to 0.02-0.03%. 4. Sb has adverse influence on spheroidizing of graphite if the amount is over 0.04%.

There is a problem that semiconductor probe pin has a short lifespan. In order to solve this problem, Ti having excellent conductivity was doped to tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) having excellent hardness and abrasion resistance. This experiment was planned through the Taguchi robust design to determine the effect of the control factor of the ta-C:Ti coating film. The effect and contribution of control factors such as Unbalanced Magnetron Sputter(UBM) discharge current, arc discharge current, temperature, and bias voltage on ta-C:Ti characteristics were analyzed from the perspective of electrical and mechanical characteristics. The UBM discharge current was set to 4, 6, and 8 A. The main control factor of thickness and resistance is the UBM discharge current, and the thickness increased and the resistance decreased as the current increased. The decrease in resistance is due to the increase in the Ti content of the ta-C:Ti coating film. The arc discharge current was set to 60, 80, and 100 A. The main control factor of hardness and wear is the arc discharge current, and as the current rises, the hardness increases and the wear area decreases. This is due to the increased ta-C content of the ta-C:Ti coating film. Since resistance and wear are important for Probe Pin, the optimal level is set from the perspective of resistance and wear and a confirmation experiment is conducted.
Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on cast Mg-6 wt%Al alloy solution-treated at 693K for 16h and aged at 498K. The surface roughness, thickness, micro-hardness, wear and corrosion properties of coatings on solution-treated and aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy were investigated. The coatings on aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy had thinner layer and lower micro-hardness and wear resistance than the solution-treated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy. As the aging time increased, the thickness of coatings decreased while the surface roughness was almost no changed. In addition, the micro-hardness and wear property of coatings decreased with increasing the aging time unlike the uncoated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy showing the peak micro-hardness and the best wear property after aging for 16 h. However, the coatings on Mg-6 wt%Al alloy peak-aged for 16h revealed the best corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution, which was explained based on the microstructural characteristics.

We investigated the tribochemical and wear properties of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based polymer matrix composites with nanoceramic (NC) ${\beta}$-sialon, and $Al_2O_3$ particles for the mechanical seal applications at low temperature. SEM showed that NC particles were homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix and initiated the formation of the supramolecular spherulites around NC. From the temperature stimulated depolarization (TSD) current results, it was analyzed that the surface charge on nanoceramic affected the formation of the spherulites structure. 2 wt % $Al_2O_3$ NC did not degrade the mechanical properties of PTFE so that composites showed the similar values of tensile strength, elongation at the rupture and friction coefficient as those of neat PTFE. However, the composite with 2 wt % $Al_2O_3$ NC revealed the improved wear resistance, wear rate of 0.4-1.2 mg/h at room temperature and 0.28 mg/h at $-40^{\circ}C$, respectively, while the neat PTFE the 70-75 mg/h at room temperature and 70.3 mg/h at $-40^{\circ}C$.
