PURPOSE. To evaluate the wear of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dental ceramic materials opposed by enamel as a function of increased chewing forces. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The enamel cusps of healthy human third molar teeth (n = 40) opposed by materials from CAD-CAM dental ceramic groups (n = 10), including Vita Enamic® (ENA), a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN); GC Cerasmart® (CERA), a resin nanoceramic; Celtra® Duo (DUO), a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramic; and IPS e.max ZirCAD (ZIR), a polycrystalline zirconia, were exposed to chewing simulation (1,200,000 cycles; 120 N load; 1 Hz frequency; 0.7 mm lateral and 2 mm vertical motion). The wear of both enamel cusps and materials was quantified using a 3D laser scanner, and the wear mechanisms were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were analysed using Welch ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test (α = .05). RESULTS. ZIR showed lower volume loss (0.02 ± 0.01 mm3) than ENA, CERA and DUO (P = .001, P = .018 and P = .005, respectively). The wear of cusp/DUO [0.59 mm3 (0.50-1.63 mm3)] was higher than cusp/CERA [0.17 mm3 (0.04-0.41 mm3)] (P = .007). ZIR showed completely different wear mechanism in SEM. CONCLUSION. Composite structured materials such as PICN and ZLS ceramic exhibit more abrasive effect on opposing enamel due to their loss against wear, compared to uniform structured zirconia. The resin nano-ceramic causes the lowest enamel wear thanks to its flexible nano-ceramic microstructure. While zirconia appears to be an enamel-friendly material in wear volume loss, it can cause microstructural defects of enamel.
In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.
The wear resistance of P-bronze which is widely used as worm gear material was investigated. In order 1o study the effect of additional elements on the wear resistance of Pbronze, the applied load and sliding time were selected as variables, and SCM4, were used as against metal. The addition of Fe improve wear resistance, for it precipities hard Fe$_3$ P phase and the work hardening coefficients are lowered due to decreasing solubility of P. When Fe is added in conventional P-bronze, the alloy is rather sliding than forming wear debris by frictional force during wear test. Experimental results indicated that the wear mechanisms for P-bronze are mainly consisted of abrasive wear due to Beilby layer forming mechanism and adhesive wear due to thermally activated wear mechanism. Moreover, the weight loss is decreased in accordance with increasing load and time. However the rate of wear loss is decreased as the sliding time is increased.
The fabrication Process of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites by pressureless infiltration technique and the effects of additive Mg content and volume fraction of particulate reinforcement on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. It was found that the bending strength decreased with increasing volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. Whereas hardness increased with volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. The decrement of strength in case of high volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles was attributed to high porosity level. In terms of additive Mg content, $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing around 5~7wt% of additive Mg indicated the highest strength, and hardness values increased with additive Mg contents. Wear resistance of AC8A alloy were improved by reinforcement of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles especially at high sliding velocity. Wear property of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region. However a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which shows the minimum wear loss and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited almost same value as at slow velocity region, whereas wear loss of AC8A alloy almost linearly increased with sliding velocity. It was found that $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 20% exhibited abrasive wear surface regardless of sliding velocity and $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 40% showed slightly adhesive wear surface at low sliding velocity, and it progressed to severe wear as increasing the sliding velocity.
The severe wear of anterior teeth facilitates the loss of anterior guidance, which protects the posterior teeth from wear during excursive movement. The collapse of posterior teeth also results in the loss of normal occlusal plane and the reduction of the vertical dimension. This case report describes 77-year-old female, who had the loss of anterior guidance, the severe wear of dentition, and the reduction of the vertical dimension. Occlusal overlay splint was used after the decision of increasing vertical dimension by anatomical landmark, facial and physiologic measurement. Once the compatibility of the new vertical dimension had been confirmed, interim fixed restoration and the permanent reconstruction was initiated. This case reports that a satisfactory clinical result was achieved by restoring the vertical dimension with an improvement in esthetics and function.

The performances of porous bearings under different operating conditions were experimentally investigated in this study. Material groups studied are 90%Cu + 10%Sn bronze and 1%C + % balance Fe iron-based self-lubricating P/M bearings at constant (85%) density. In the experiments, the variation of the coefficient of friction and wear ratio of those two different group materials for different sliding speeds, loads, and temperatures were investigated. As a result, the variation of the friction coefficient-temperature for both constant load, and constant sliding speed, friction coefficient-average bearing pressure, PV-wear loss and temperature-wear loss curves were plotted and compared with each other for two materials, separately. The test results showed that Cu-based bearings have better friction and wear properties than Fe-based bearings.

The TiN films were deposited on the stainless substrates using arc vapor ion deposition process to in-vestigated the wear resistance. Pin-on-disc tests were performed to measure the volume wear loss of TiN films. The substrate bias voltages and nitrogen flow rates were selected as the deposition parameters of TiN films. It was found that the wear resistance of TiN films was enhanced with increasing bias voltages(0~-300 V) and nitrogen flow rates(220~380 SCCM). The volume wear loss TiN films were about 9.5~2.1$\times$$10^{-3}mm^3$ and 3.5~2.2$\times$$10^{-3}mm^3$ with bias voltages and nitrogen flow rates, respectively.

This study sintered $Si_3N_4$ with different amounts of $SiO_2$ nano-colloid. The surface of a mirror-polished specimen was coated with $SiO_2$ nano-colloid, and cracks were healed when the specimen was treated at a temperature of 1273 K for 1 h in air. Wear specimen experiments were conducted after heat treatments for 10 min at 1073, 1273, and 1573 K. The heat-treated surface that was coated with the $SiO_2$ nano-colloid was slightly rougher than the noncoated surface. The oxidation state of the surface according to the heat treatment temperature showed no correlation with the surface roughness. Moreover, the friction coefficient, wear loss, and bending strength were not related to the surface roughness. $Si_3N_4$ exhibited an abrasive wear behavior when SKD11 was used as an opponent material. The friction coefficient was proportional to the wear loss, and the bending strength was inversely proportional to the friction coefficient and wear loss. The friction coefficient and wear loss increased with increasing amounts of the $SiO_2$ nanocolloid. In addition, the friction coefficient was slightly increased by increasing the heat treatment temperature.
Three different white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their abrasion wear behavior in as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The specimens were produced using a 15㎏-capacity high frequency induction furnace. Melts were super-heated to $1600^{\circ}C$, and poured at $1550^{\circ}C$ into Y-block pepset molds. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 1: $M_7C_3$ and $M_6C$), 3%C -10%V-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2: MC and $M_2C$) and 3%C-17%Cr-3%V(alloy No. 3: $M_7C_3$ only). A scratching type abrasion test was carried out in the states of as-cast(AS), homogenizing(AH), air-hardening(AHF) and tempering(AHFT). First of all, the as-cast specimens were homogenized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 5h under the vacuum atmosphere. Then, they were austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2h and followed by air-hardening in air. The air-hardened specimens were tempered at $300^{\circ}C$ for 3h. 1 ㎏ load was applied in order to contact the specimen with abrading wheel which was wound by 120 mesh SiC paper. The wear loss of the test piece(dimension: $50{\times}50{\times}5$ mm) was measured after one cycle of wear test and this procedure was repeated up to 8 cycles. In all the specimens, the abrasion wear loss was found to decrease in the order of AH, AS, AHFT and AHF states. Abrasion wear loss was lowest in the alloy No.2 and highest in the alloy No.1 except for the as-cast and homogenized condition in which the alloy No.3 showed the highest abrasion wear loss. The lowest abrasion wear loss of the alloy No.2 could be attributed to the fact that it contained primary and eutectic MC carbides, and eutectic $M_2C$ carbide with extremely high hardness. The matrix of each specimen was fully pearlitic in the as-cast state but it was transformed to martensite, tempered martensite and austenite depending upon the type of heat-treatment. From these results, it becomes clear that MC carbide is a significant phase to improve the abrasion wear resistance.

Machines are physically or chemically degenerated by continuous usage. One of the results of this degeneration is the process mean shift. Under the process mean shift, production cost, failure cost and quality loss function cost are increasing continuously. Therefore a periodic preventive resetting the process is necessary. We suppose that the wear level is observable. In this case, process mean shift problem has similar characteristics to the maintenance policy model. In the previous studies, process mean shift problem has been studied in several fields such as 'Tool wear limit', 'Canning Process' and 'Quality Loss Function' separately or partially integrated form. This paper proposes an integrated cost model which involves production cost by the material, failure cost by the nonconforming items, quality loss function cost by the deviation between the quality characteristics from the target value and resetting the process cost. We expand this process mean shift problem a little more by dealing the process variance as a function, not a constant value. We suggested a multiplier function model to the process variance according to the analysis result with practical data. We adopted two-side specification to our model. The initial process mean is generally set somewhat above the lower specification. The objective function is total integrated costs per unit wear and independent variables are wear limit and initial setting process mean. The optimum is derived from numerical analysis because the integral form of the objective function is not possible. A numerical example is presented.
