A suspended hemispherical silicon asperity moving over a silicon plate was simulated. The simulation results on friction and wear in the interface between the two can help obtain more durable miscroscale structures. Silicon structures were constructed with Tersoff three-body potential. Dependence of friction and wear of the asperity on both the atomic arrangement in the plate and the moving direction was investigated under the condition that the asperity is subject to the attractive normal force due to the plate. The results show that the variation of friction force with the movement of asperity, and the occurrence of adhesive wear are attributed to the formation and rupture of asperity, junction between the asperity and the plate. The friction force and wear are smaller when the asperity is incommensurate with the plate, and they also depend on the moving direction of the asperity over the plate.
To apply the wear resistant steel plate for heavy duty vehicle, the wear characterisms of various kinds of commercial steel plates were invesigated by dry sand/rubber wheel tester which was tested under scratch abrasion mode. The wear tested pnaterials were boron steels which were manufactured by thereto machanical control process (TMCP) in order to achieve higher hardness. As the result of the test, wear resistance of steel plate increases with the hardness and carbon content. The wear loss of wear resistance steel plate (Hv440) is a half times than tinat of SWS490A (Hv160) steel plate in dry sand-rubber wheel test and the result in field test is similar to this dry sand/rubber wheel test result. Therefore, dry sand/rubber wheel tester can be used to predict the scratch abrasion life of the parts for heavy duty vehicle.
There are about 13,000 freight cars in Korea. The holding amount of the freight cars are many more than the other types of cars. But the bogie structure has many friction parts, so three are many hold-ups for the maintenance problem on the spot. As seen in Fig. 1 friction parts are organized of 30 parts in case of welding structure bogie. Especially left-right positions of the axle box have severe problems for the wear, they occurs the reduction of maintenance period, a lowering of the running safety. Generally the thickness of wear plate is 4.5mm and attached to bogie by way of welding method. At the running situation the friction occurs in wear plate each other. Namely the role of the wear plate reduce the load from the carbody. So we need the wear plate fur low-wearing, adequate friction power.
Control of back-up roll deformation and wear profile in plate rolling is important not only for enhancement of the structural precision of mill, but also for improving the yield and rolling operation. in the heavy plate mill, there have been strong demands for upgrading back up roll operation technology. In order to satisfy these demands, it is essential to develop the backup roll deformation analysis models and wear profile prediction models. This paper gives a general description of the backup roll deformation and wear model, simulation result for deformation analysis and wear profile.
The major flow-induced vibration mechanisms such as fluid-elastic and turbulence excitation can cause the various types of wear of the steam generator tubes in unclear power plant. It is generally accepted that the tube wear due to vibration is affected by the presence of gap clearance between tube and support plate. Connors showed that the tube wear depth could be estimated by using the relationship between wear volume and sliding distance for contact time. Au-Yang predicted the wear depth by using the nonlinear characteristics of normal work rate to contact time. In this study the effect of gap size on the steam generator tubes wear is analyzed by deriving the wear depth versus normal work rate relationship from these previous results.
In this paper, a robust design of the back-plate of the brake pad to decrease the uneven wear of the pad was studied. A finite element analysis was performed to analyze the pressure distributions on the contact surfaces. Optimized back-plate shape of the brake pad was determined using the Taguchi method. The effectiveness of the robust design was clarified by the wear tests with a dynamometer.
Generally the side plate materials of FRP ship are composed of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites(GFRP composites). In this study, the effect of applied load and sliding speed on friction and wear characteristics of these materials were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The cumulative wear volume, friction coefficient and wear rate of these materials for SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinearly with increase of sliding distance and was dependent on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. The friction coefficient of GFRP composites was increased as applied load increased at same sliding speed in wear test. It was verified by SEM photograph of worn surface that major failure mechanisms were microfracture, deformation of resin, cutting and cracking.
Cobalt-chromium (CoCr)-based alloys have been used for wear applications because of their excellent mechanical properties and wear resistance. With growing concern over environmental problems, CoCr alloys are expected to be used for various tribological applications in degraded lubrication states. To expand the applicability of the materials, data should be accumulated across a broad spectrum of experimental parameters. In this work, the friction and wear characteristics of cobalt-chromium-tungsten (CoCrW) and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are investigated experimentally. The tests are conducted using a pin-on-reciprocating-plate tribotester in dry lubrication. CoCrW and CoCrMo are used as pin and plate materials to investigate the effect of the counter material. The results show that the friction coefficients between CoCrW and CoCrMo generally range from 0.4 to 0.5. The friction coefficient between the CoCrW pin and plate is found to be slightly small. However, the total wear between the CoCrW pin and plate is found to be the largest. In contrast, the total wear between the CoCrW pin and plate is relatively small. Furthermore, CoCrW may cause a faster wear progression of CoCrMo, especially for the case in which CoCrMo is used as the pin material. The results of this work provide a better understanding of the tribological properties of CoCrW and CoCrMo alloys. In addition, this work provides a practical guideline for the use of CoCrW and CoCrMo from the tribological design viewpoint.
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been widely used in many industrial applications because of their outstanding mechanical and chemical properties like hardness, wear resistance, lubricous property, chemical stability, and uniformity of deposition. Also, DLC films coated on paper, polymer, and metal substrates have been extensively used. In this work, in order to improve the printing quality and plate wear of polymer printing plates, different deposition conditions were used for depositing DLC on the polymer printing plates using the Pulsed DC PECVD method. The deposition temperature of the DLC films was under $100^{\circ}C$, in order to prevent the deformation of the polymer plates. The properties of each DLC coating on the polymer concave printing plate were analyzed by measuring properties such as the roughness, surface morphology, chemical bonding, hardness, plate wear resistance, contact angle, and printing quality of DLC films. From the results of the analysis of the properties of each of the different DLC deposition conditions, the deposition conditions of DLC + F and DLC + Si + F were found to have been successful at improving the printing quality and plate wear of polymer printing plates because the properties were improved compared to those of polymer concave printing plates.
The effect of counterpart roughness on abrasive wear characteristics of side plate materials of FRP ship, which were composed of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites, were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-an-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, wear rate and cumulative wear volume of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The wear rate of these materials decreased rapidly with sliding distance and then maintained a constant value. It was increased as counterpart roughness was rougher in a wear test. The cumulative wear volume tended to increase nonlinearly with sliding distance and depended on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. It could be verified by SEM photograph of fracture surface that major failure mechanisms were overlapping layers, microcutting, deformation of resin, delamination, and cracking.
