  • Scanning electron microscopic observations were carried out on the worn surface and the wear debris of ceramic materials to investigate the wear mechanism of those in dry rolling contact. It was found from the scanning electron microscopic observations that the wear in ceramic materials is related to brittle fracture and has two types of wear mechanisms, small scale wear and larvae scare wear. Plate-like wear debris were created from the initial surface cracks and defects. The small scale wear was related to real contact area and large scale wear was related to HertzJan contact area. A wear model was proposed on the basis of scanning electron microscopic observations.

  • The fracture and wear behavior of dental composite resins containing prepolymerized particle fillers were investigated. Composite resins such as Metafil, Silux Plus, Heliomolar and Palfique Estelite were selected as specimens and contents of filler in specimens in order to evaluate the effect of prepolymerized particle fillers in fracture and wear characteristics. Ball on flat wear tester was used for the wear test at room temperature. The friction coefficient of Metafil was quite high relatively, and the wear resistances of Silux Plus and Palfique Estelite were better than those of Metafil and Heliomolar at the same experimental condition. It was found that the main wear mechanism was abrasive wear containing of plastic deformation of dental material.

  • This paper is to investigate the wear behavior of submerged-arc clad materials by the wear test with a ball-on-disk type wear testing machine in air. The specimens were clad with Stoody105 alloy wire on a carbon steel (SM45C) substrate by submerged-arc cladding process under different welding parameters. The wear behavior of the cladding through ball-en-disk test has been studied under the wear load from 5N to 16N and sliding speed from 8cm/s to 35cm/s. The weight of the specimen loss was measured. Scanning electron micrographs of the worn surface show a layer of oxide film formed on the worn surface. Oxidation wear mechanism controls the wear process. The spalling of the oxide is caused by the repeated rubbing fatigue mechanism.

  • This paper is to investigate the wear behavior of submerged-arc claddings by the wear test with a ball-on-disk type wear testing machine in air. The specimens were clad with Stoody105 alloy wire on a medium carbon steel (SM45C) substrate by submerged-arc cladding process under different welding parameters. The wear behavior of the cladding through ball-on-disk test has been studied under the wear load from 5 to 16 N and the sliding speed from 8 to 35 cm/s. The weight loss of the specimen was measured. • The fretting wear of a nuclear fuel rod it a dangerous phenomenon. In this study, TiN coating was used to reduce the fretting wear of Zircaloy-4 tube, a nuclear fuel rod cladding material. TiN coating is probably one of the molt frequently and successfully used PVD coatings for the mitigation of fretting wear. The fretting tester was designed and manufactured for this experiment. The number of cycles, slip amplitude and normal load were selected as main factors of fretting wear. The results of this research showed that wear volume was improved 1.3∼3.2 times with TiN coating. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM. Wear mechanism at lower slip amplitude was the brittle cracks and rupture of TiN coating. However, adhesive and abrasive wear were mainly observed on most surfaces at higher slip amplitude.

  • The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the specific wear rate under the various applied load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations. The presence of silica filler in epoxy composites was demonstrated significant influence on the friction and wear behavior of epoxy nanocomposites. With the incorporation of silica filler into the epoxy matrix, reduction of the coefficient of friction and specific wear rate were identified. Wear mechanism was discussed by analyzing the worn surface by scanning electron microscope as well.

  • The wear mechanism of material is an important mechanic property to select a material's life and a optimum work condition. Although there are many researches about a wear mechanism of material, the pin-on-disc type tribotester is widely known to us. It is difficult to add a variable and heavy load in the existing pin-on-disc type tribotester to estimate this wear mechanism. And due to a rotation of a disc, it is impossible to add a constant force. But we can solve this problem by using a hydraulic servo system. Therefore, in order to investigate a wear mechanism of materials, it is necessary to design a hydraulic pin-on-disc type tribotester and construct a controller against a variable disturbance.

  • The wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of steam generator (SG) tube materials against ferritic stainless steel in water environment. The wear rates of SG tube materials depend on the change of mechanical properties between contact surfaces during wear test. From the subsurface hardness test, Inconel 690 is more work-hardened than Inconel 600 even though these materials have similar hardness values before the wear test. Main cause is due to the difference of stacking fault energy with the chromium content. In water environment, wear mechanism is closely related with the continuous formation and fracture of deformation layers at the contact surfaces.
